Dealer Comments On Your Play -- What Do You Do?

1/2 NL - I'm in late position in seat 1 (next to dealer). Two limpers to me and I raise to $20. All fold and as the dealer is pushing the pot to me he says "Bet 20 to win 7. Nice play." It was clearly in a condescending tone, probably just loud enough for me to hear.

Personally, I think this was WAY over the line. To me, the dealer's job is to run the game smoothly, not to editorialize. Leave that to Gabe Kaplan.

I haven't said anything to him, but I haven't tipped him since then (maybe half a dozen pots). Obviously it's eating at me since this happened 2-3 weeks ago. What, if anything, should I have done/said at the time? Thoughts and comments welcomed.

Re: Dealer Comments On Your Play -- What Do You Do?

What was the 'standard' raise at that table. Sounds like you overbet the pot -- but I agree, it's not for the dealer to comment.

At the table, I'd do nothing. If you want to punish this dealer by not tipping him, that's your choice. Certainly wouldn't punish any other dealer, though.

If it's annoying you, but not affecting your game, I suppose you can go to the floor afterwards and discuss this.

If it's really annoying you and changing your game, either ask for a table change, or it's time for a dinner break.

I would have said back, just loud enough for him to hear, "Run your fat mouth so you never get a tip from me again. Nice play."

I hate dealers that are **** like this. If they are joking, I don't mind - I'll joke around with dealers more than anyone at the table ... but if they're going to be ****, then [censored] em.

Re: Dealer Comments On Your Play -- What Do You Do?

I’d ignore what the dealer said. It’s hard to be very successful at poker (or probably much else) if you let little things like this get under your skin. Alternately, you could simply look at him and say, “That was inappropriate” and leave it at that. Any reaction beyond that is probably disproportionate to the situation.

As described, if I were another player at the table and happened to overhear this, I would politely ask the dealer to please refrain from tapping on the glass.

I am in no way a jerk at the table, but I would definitely show the dealer that I'm not one of those quiet guys that will just sit there and take their crap.

And I will say something if the dealer is spewing B.S. that is incorrect (rulings, etc).

just tell the floor, don't stiff the dealer on future pots

Re: Dealer Comments On Your Play -- What Do You Do?

"Dealer. I don't think it's appropriate for you to comment on how anyone plays their own cards. Please don't do that again"

If he doesn't apologize, call the floor and ask the floor to explain that it's not appropriate.

I had a different situation where the dealer was gossiping about me at the table, and I asked him to stop, and he didn't. Calling the floor worked wonders. FWIW, I will seriously never tip this certain dealer again for the rest of my life, but mainly for other reasons.

Mean Way: "Do you like tokes? If you ever want to take another toke off my bong again, you best keep the play by play analysis to yourself!"

obviously you begin making subtle comments about his/her dealing. "wow you really missed the mark on that pitch. nice job." or "does it always take you that long to figure up the side pot?" or "imagine how much more tips you would make if you didn't move like an effing sloth"

this is really the only way to handle the situation.

That is true...only you have a competent floor with good managerial skills.

Ok, so we can compromise. First, take it to the floor. If the same stuff happens the next down or next session they deal to you, you have the right to berate them.

most houses care about this, the floor knows that this shouldn't occur. I've been playing at Binion's all week because of BARGE, and the dealers there are very loose with their mouths - the floor keeps pulling them aside when this happens (and the floor at Binion's isn't that good, but even they know that the dealer should never comment on the play)

At the Mirage, you will be asked to leave the poker room if you announce to the table that you don't intend to tip.

Tipping is a personal decision, once you share your no tipping policy with the table you might be breaking the rules. As I said earlier, go see the floor.

telling the floor will do next to nothing. some matters must be taken into ones own hands. next time they come to deal at your table and you are in the one or ten seat, slide some rusty tacks onto their chair before they sit down.

When a player starts complaining about the way I deal, I playfully warn them, "Look, if you want to keep talking about the way I deal, I'll have to start talking about the way you play."

I'm sure this can be fitted to the OP's situation.

I did not say that op should announce that he will not be tipping. I said that op should've immediately responded to dealer's remark thereby putting him on notice as to why he will not be receiving future tips. Then just play normally sans tips to the dealer with the smart mouth.

Why get the floor involved if matter can be easily handled yourself?

BTW, tx for the Rio recommendation to me for PLO $5-$5 a couple of months back, sweet game.

Because this is a matter that cannot be solved by yourself. The floor's job is to manager the staff, to educate them why comments like this are wrong. The core of the problem is not that the dealer is making comments, its that the dealer doesn't know why he should not be making comments. Let the floorperson do his or her job, they WANT you to turn to them.

Re: Dealer Comments On Your Play -- What Do You Do?

Here's what I don't understand -- why does anyone think that getting into a pissing match with the dealer is EVER a good idea.

Maybe it's because I play low limits. My experience is that in a given evening, most of the money won comes from a few players, who usually aren't very good, and if the truth be told are more concerned with having a good time than winning (See Psychology of Poker).

If the table gets ugly, these leetle feeshes swim away to another table.

So, yeah, at a $1/2 NL game, you can make a smartass comment to the dealer, but this has got to be -ev.

Re: Dealer Comments On Your Play -- What Do You Do?

I highly doubt that the floorstaff actually gives a rat's ass about this, even if they pretend they do. I'm the most quiet person at the table usually (I never complain about string raises etc.), but that comment does not slide with me. I'd probably politely tell him to mind his own business and never tip him again. Also TT, I doubt the dealer in question doesn't know he is being inappropriate, and if he really doesn't, he is a moron and was trained very poorly.

This is all with the assumption that it was said in a condescending tone, and not jokingly!

Naturally I understand that but I thought TT was referring to a specific poker room rule. I guarantee you if walked up to a craps table, told them I did not plan on tipping and then I played craps for 5 hours there is zero chance I'd be 86'd from the craps table (now I might not get the best customer service or any favorable rulings so making the announcement would be -EV for me). Not that I ever stiff at table games or poker games, after all that is how they make a living wage. But if Donna is going to try to force me to leave the poker room if I sit down at a poker table and say "I plan on not tipping", my casino host will enlighten her pretty quickly.

Yes, they definitely could throw you out for wearing a red jacket. I don't know if its written down or not, I was just saying that even if it isn't it doesn't make any difference. And it apparently isn't just based on a whim if TT is saying that it WILL happen. That means that its a regular, established thing, even if it is an unwritten policy.

I kind of have a hunch they'd inform you of the policy before tossing you out, but maybe they wouldn't.

Personally, I don't think this is that bad. His statement was made after the hand, so at least he did not influence the play of that hand (which would have been much worse). His statement could impact your table image, but I think it would be a positive impact, or at least one that you should be able to use to your advantage.

If the other players think you are a Donkey, that can definately be manipulated. Even if they just note that you you like to make a big raise when you have a premium hand and there is a limper, that can also be good. It would have been even better to confirm his statement by saying something like "I'd rather win a little pot with aces than lose a big one" or some such.

Its an enforced rule at Mirage (I was surprised when i learned about it through first hand experiance), but I agree your casino host would probably be able to solve that rather quickly. Rules are made to be broken. And of course the floor would most likely warn you first, and only ask you to leave if you continued to harp on the issue.
