Beat: I caught one of my students plagiarizing

So...I'm teaching a Spanish class this summer, and I assigned a project to my students that they had to write, in either English or Spanish, about a day that bears historical significance in a Spanish-speaking country.

Most of them Dia de los Muertos, one did the day that Hidalgo called for revolution in Mexico(September 16), and a few did Cinco de Mayo.

My best student did a paper on Cinco de Mayo that was verbatim from the Wiki entry on Cinco de Mayo, both the English and Spanish versions. She is far and away the best student in class, with something like a 97 average prior to this little stunt. Now, she has to rewrite it all tonight for a maximum of an 80...and it counts 20% of her final grade.

Brag: All my kids are achievers with few discipline problems.
Beat: Caught my best student plagiarizing her major project
Beat: Now I have to go back and make sure no one else was cheating
Variance: The papers that were worse actually draw less suspicion, because no reliable resource would commit some of the atrocities of grammar I've seen.

Wait, so you let them write it in either english or spanish, and some kids still chose to write it in spanish? What the hell?

Re: Beat: I caught one of my students plagiarizing

You should give all your students a pre-test - make it tough - but if they pass give them the damn A regardless of what they do. College diplomas prove you know something not that you did X amount of busy work. Assignments should be to facilitate learning not to keep your students busy. If your best student already knows the material - don't waste their time reproving it over and over again just so they can get you to sign off on having learned it.

That said - I don't condone cheating, but there's an economics to it - just as is with speeding tickets. Is the time saved worth the amount of trouble for getting caught * times the probability of getting caught?

Oh yeah and this thread is worthless w/o pics ldo.

wow you went really easy on her

ive never known a teacher that would allow a student who outright cheated to get a B... most give automatic Fs on the assignment and sometimes an automatic F for the entire course

I know I did, but it was first offense, and this is summer school in a private summer academy. If it was my normal class, I would have been much harsher.

The amount of work it takes to not get caught cheating is pretty much always going to be more than the amount of work to get a B, especially at colllege.

They didn't have any sort of written papers as homework up to this point?

That kinda makes it worse to me. She's in summer school either because she couldn't pass the first time or because she wanted to give up some of her summer to learn something she - presumably - could learn doing during the school year. Cheating in either circumstance is as bad or worse than cheating in a "regular" class.

Just curious, how did you bust her on the wiki thing? Did you google a sentence from her paper? Were you checking on some fact, or looking for more info on something interesting? Were you checking for plagiarism, or just stumble across it?

kiddcheckers 08-01-2007 04:41 PM

Re: Beat: I caught one of my students plagiarizing

man, if she was smart she would use the "I wrote the wiki" excuse. Genius.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah seriously.. definitely auto-fail the assignment, and probably the class. Go back and look through her papers and see if it's a habit or just a one time deal. If it's a one time thing (and maybe she has some sort of explanation?), just fail the assignment (maaaybe offer a high F if she re-does the assignment and has a good explanation since this is worth so much of her final grade). If it's happened before, auto-fail the class.

In college this kinda thing could get you kicked out of the entire University.

What kinda message does that send to the other kids? Don't 100% plagiarize your papers, 'cause if you get caught you'll only get a B (on that assignment, and still ace the class).

uh, cheating to get a B on things that arent in class tests is ridiculously easy unless you are stupid like said girl. my friends did something this stupid in like 10th grade, one friend copied anothers homework except he accidently skipped one problem so all of his problems were the exact right answer, just for the question below. if you don't know how to cheat then don't do it, otherwise its easy

Re: Beat: I caught one of my students plagiarizing

in HS, all the social science classes always made you write your answers on foolscap. I realized i could just write out all the definitions and the people parts on foolscap that i took from student services prior to the test, then just bring them in with me, pick up some blank foolscap at the front of the room, mix it all in, bingo bango, half the test is done.

The rest was always multiple choice or essays (neither you need to study for much), so ship 90's in high school social sciences.
