Beat: Just Found out my sister is my mom

So my mom and dad told me yesterday that they are really my grandparents. My reaction was WTF!!!!!!!

So growing up I had a "sister". She was much older than me. 16 years, so i think she moved out of the house when I was like 2. I really don't remember her living with us at all. I remember her coming to visit on holidays and she was married. She got divorced about 5 years ago, I really didn't know her husband that well. My parents were really poor ,and so was my sister, but I remeber when she came to visit she always brought me really cool toys (guilt???). She got me a nintendo 64 for christmas which was awesome when I was 15 or whatever. My parents where mid 30s when I was born so my family was pretty normal besides the fact that I had a sister much older but I guess I didn't think about it that much. I figured we were both accidents cuz they were pretty young when they had her and pretty old when they had me. But whatver, most people are probably accidents and overall they were good parents.

My grandmother (great grandmother now I guess) just died and me my mom, dad and sister are all together for the first time in a while. My mom is crying since her mom just died and she decides to tell my now the whole story.

After she tells me my sister (mom) starts crying and my dad (grandfather)leaves the room. I am pretty shaken up by the whole thing. After a while I start asking questions. The first one is who the hell is my dad. I assumed it was the guy my sister was married to for a while but it turns out it was somebody else. He killed himself when my sister (mom) was pregnant and they figured the best shot I had at a decent life was telling me that they were my parents.

I cried for a little bit. I am 23 and don't remeber the last time I cried in front of my parents. The weird part is I had a pretty good childhood. I think there was no way my sister could have raised me given how young she was and given the fact that my dad shot himself when she was pregnant. I wish they had told me earlier.

I don't think I can ever think of my sister as my mom and I will always think of my grandparents as mom and dad.

Thanks for reading. Not sure why I posted this but you guys and my girlfriend are the first people I have told. Its gonna be really weird telling all my friends. When I build up the strength I am going to ask my sister about my dad. I guess alot of people never knew there dad but I always thought I did so it is pretty crazy to realize half my genes come from some random dude that shot himself.

Edit (fixed typo on age when I got 64)

Oh so you got the N64 7 years before it was released, and a year before the SNES was released? That's pretty cool. Your sister/mom must have pretty sweet connections.

Jack Nicholson was in this same situation. It is not a big deal. Grandparent is just a word. They have raised you 100%. They are your parents.

guy finds out his gf is acually his sister:
[ QUOTE ]
Your sentiment shows you don’t love her as much as you think. If you did, your concern would have been for her, not what your friends would think of the change in your relationship. It only goes to prove that God deliberately brought you both together to correct the wrong done the innocent girl by your father. If you have been more matured and listened to the voice of God, you would have known the relationship was not meant to be romantic, but to mend a broken family.

True. I remeber when I was in high school a kid in my grade killed himself. I knew who he was but we weren't really friends or anything. I think we had a class or two together. I remeber my mom crying when I told her and thinking it was really weird since she never met the kid, I guess it makes more sense now.

I guess I grew up in a white trash area (i guess that might be obvious) but most of my friends parents where in their early to lmid 20s when they had their kida and stopped having them when they realized how expensive they were.

Max, ignore all the retard replies. Who your 'parents' are is more about emotional relationships than genetics. We had a similar situation in my family with my sister (who was raised by my grandparents)and most folks don't know she's my sister and not my aunt. She too, never knew her bio Dad and it ate her up for a long time, but eventually she realized she was pretty lucky in how and where she was raised, since my Mom was very young and really poor. I grew up in the housing projects on welfare and whatnot and she grew up in a nice house in rural Mass. None of it has anything to do with you, it sounds like your folks made good decisions and you turned out better for it. Your sister (Mom) probably has guilt issues (my Mom will never get over hers), but there's not much you can do about that, except tell her you're not mad at her (if you aren't). In many ways this isn't a beat, just variance.

Thanks for the post. I feel like given the hand that I was dealt I had a very good childhood. Most of my friends only had a mom so I was really lucky to have a mom and a dad. I really have no ill will towards my sister. I really have not been super close to my parents or sister since I went to college. I help them out financially if they need it and I still will of course. I have had almost no relationship with my sister for a while, she has a steady boyfriend who seems like a good guy. I think she probably didn't want to get very close to me but maybe she will now?

The people who raised you are your parents. Of course, its going to be a weird adjustment for a while, but they did this with your welfare in mind at the time. Sounds like they stepped up big time to me.

FWIW, I can't really say much about the Dad thing. Before you start hating, you need to remember that it sounds like he was very young and made a horrible decision that was unfortunately unreversable. It doesn't mean he was a horrible person or would have been a bad father, it just means he made a terrible decision, the implications of which I doubt most 16-17 year olds could entirely understand.

Good Luck.
