Ask me about bumming it

Disclaimer: after 6+ months of bumming it I have resigned myself to employment for at least a short while.

Prolegomena: doing things you don't want to do sucks. Working is a huge beat for 99.9% of people in the world. Unless you are a secret agent or an astronaut, your job sucks. You may have resigned yourself to the fact that it is what it is, you may not mind working, but let's face the cold, hard economic reality: if work didn't suck, they wouldn't have to pay you to do it. I'm pretty lazy. My ultimate goal if I had infinite $$ would be to laze around, travel, eat food and chill all the time. I evaluate potential jobs with a sort of balance system:

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/9...yscalesac4.png

A job is either rewarding (pays well or whatever else you consider compensation for working... but basically pays well) or is easy. As pay increases, my tolerance for workload increases. As pay decreases, I expect to do less. Extrapolate this and you will realize that being broke but having absolutely zero responsibilities fits into this system. Ask me how to do it.

Ask me about having no money and getting by nicely anyway, or how to live busto, etc. I read threads like "zomg I'm down to my last $2k online!" and "zomg I'm getting evicted!" and sense that BBV4L could use some sagely advice on how to get by with nothing but what you already own.

the fact that you use the word prolegomena suggests you are overeducated, like me

how much would your monthly nut be in a true bum scenario?

Depends on whether or not you're a smoker (I am), but I think $100/month is pretty easily doable, but this presumes finding a place to stay for free of course.

edit: and yeah I'm overeducated. Majoring in philosophy was a bad idea. It's financially useless, plus you end up with this "I don't give a [censored] I'm not gonna live forever anyway" attitude that, while allowing you to enjoy your life immensely, also prohibits you from accomplishing anything long term.

I never ate peanut butter, but tbh even when I have plenty of $ I never really cook. I eat about the same quality of food when I'm robusto as when I'm life busto. Fast food, dollar menu, ramen, EZ mac, etc. The only difference is I go out to eat more when I have money, but it's not a huge deal to me.

Stay for free: friends, girlfriends, family, etc. I have a pretty decent group of friends so I tended to crash at someone's place for a week or two, move someplace else and repeat. Just be a decent guest and most people are surprisingly reasonable about it.

Get money: got cds, dvds, etc? Most chain stores buy these back at pretty decent prices. Got a checkbook? Most grocery stores will let you write checks for cash back up to $120-150/week. If there are 3 grocery stores in your area, this is an easy $3-450. Credit cards are obvious, but it's easier to get store credit cards. Jewelry store credit card: pawn stuff, find people who are going to buy [censored] anyway and convince them to give you $ for the thing at a discount, etc. Straight up borrow if necessary.

Also, great places to get money: bars. You need to develop a couple of regular bars, like bars where you won't get thrown out if you don't order anything and where you can hang out and have a reasonably good time. Then make conversation with people, make friends with drunks (this is easy). They will ask why you're not drinking, you say something like "I dunno, I'm not really feeling like partying too much tonight I guess". If you have done this correctly, they will offer to buy you drinks (they will insist). Drunk people are also easy to convince to make wagers. I made $20 last night by betting a kid he'd miss his next beer pong shot (he was trashed and there was 1 cup left but he made the bet anyway so as not to look like an ass).

Also, most bars will have chicks who you can stay with for free. They might be ugly, but ugly chicks are always more willing to have you over. That's really more of a last-resort option though.

Beer is pretty easy... just find people to drink with. Bars are necessary. Stay at a bar long enough and you will end up drunk. As long as you're reasonably OK looking and a decently personable guy you should have no problem swinging free drinks, etc at a bar in an hour or so. Weed is a little trickier, but invariably if you hang around a bar long enough you will find someone who's enough of a loser that he'll let you smoke for free if you'll just be friends with him.

I never got too depressed, but not much really bothers me. I do (and did) have a car. Sleeping in the car is a last resort, which I never did.

just don't bug out about it dude. human beings have lived for a lot longer than there's been TV or whatever. it's not nearly as bad as you'd think as long as you have friends. get some books, get a job to get you back on your feet or something.
