Making a living online?

Not that im anywhere near it, but just wondering what limits and mentality people are when they decide to play online full time. I play micro stakes and already make a decent part time wage playing (although i play more hours than part time) and at the moment i feel like if i continue playing conistently and moving up stakes my hour to profit ratio will cross over.

Obviously things are never that easy so just wondering what the general guidlines are and what people here do?

This sort of thing hasn't really been covered before so it's unlikely you'll get any realistic advice.

Re: Making a living online?

I started like you did, playing micro stakes. Obviously I didn't consider it a job playing micro, and I dunno when I offically considered it a job. I guess when I was playing .5/1, but maybe it was when I was playing 2/4, not sure.

Regardless, the best advice I can give is dont use it as your only source of income until you move up to higher stakes (at least 2/4) and actually are able to beat it for at least 2-3 months.

Keep playing and moving up. If you get to the point that you should be making your living playing on-line it will be very obvious.

Theoretically is impossible to play poker for a living. You are being what is known as "leveled" by any poster who says you can.

Skillful play will never help gamblers to win money at online poker because winning money at online poker is impossible.

why people r acting like sarcastic a-holes. dah u r so f funny, my lips and face just spread. I think that smallest stake to make living is nl100, and of course if u live in developing country u can make living in much lower limit, but in american way of living nl100 might be lowest limit u can make decent money, unless u put insane hours into your play.

Pros prefer to play live because you can actually see your opponent and make reads based on their tells.

That and because Hold'em rewards bold, aggressive moves. When you are playing online against a 4-tabler, it's only possible to put them for a decision for 1/4th their chips. Live, you can put them at a decision for all their chips.

When you consistenly put your opponent to a decision for his entire big blind you will know to turn pro.

Re: Making a living online?

You have to have a large enough bankroll, a large enough sample size that demonstrates you are a winning player at a specific limit, and you'd have to know what your hourly win rate is, compared to any other "normal" job. You then take the plunge. I would reccomend a back up plan, just in case.

There is a thread in BBV covering this right now.
Basically it's impossible to make money online. Everyone loses in the long run except the house and their rigged accounts.
True story.

Playing online payed for my education and all i can say is start small and move up limits as you get more confident and a bigger bankroll

Re: Making a living online?

1.) Play over your head (i.e. beyond bankroll, experience & ability)
2.) Get Broke
3.) Take a McJob to re-build your bankroll
4.) Repeat #s 1-3 ad infinitum.

Get poker tracker. Once your poker hourly rate is twice that of your regular job I would consider leaving your regular job.

If you want to supporting a family I can't see playing less than 1/2 NL.

If don't feel like getting a summer job, you only need to beat nl .1/.25.

Re: Making a living online?

Unlike all of the other posters, I'm actually going to help you out with good advice.

------------
If you want to make a good living, first deposit your $500 on full tilt poker, and get it doubled to $1000 with the bonus.

This is called your "bankroll".

Now when you sit down on a table, you will be dealt cards. Different cards have different values.

If you watch any poker on TV, I assume that you already know that pairs are the strongest starting hands. After pairs, the strongest cards are aces. AK-A2, then kings, KQ-K2, then queens...etc.

When you deposit your money, sit down on a table with your bankroll. Generally, you want to start out with 0.2 buy-ins for a given limit, so $1,000 is good enough for $25/$50. Your strategy will be to slowplay slowplay slowplay strong hands, and bet weak hands and bluff alot. Typically, you need to bluff at least 5 times to win.

Use the frog avatar on full tilt poker, that way, you can give off "fake tells". You need to get angry whenever you have a good hand, and get happy whenever you have a bad hand. This way, you'll trick your opponents into calling your value bets and folding to your bluffs. Don't worry, if you go bust, just deposit again; it's a very easy process. Players rarely go bust in poker, especially when playing with only $1,000.

After a long session of good strong play, you might become the chip leader, or at least 2nd place. Your strategy there is to use your big stack to bully your opponents. Few opponents want to call $20,000 bets when they only have $5,000 on the table. Good luck at the tables sir, I wish you luck.
