Eternity II

Eternity II

Its a puzzle with a 2M$ prize to the first solver.
There's a smaller demo version on the site.

Re: Eternity II

Couldnt a computer solve this relatively quickly? Or are there too many combinations?

Seems a brute force edge matcher would work decently.

Re: Eternity II

I solved the 4*4 demo so I could post it if someones interested.

Well the main puzzle is significantly harder. It would take hundreds of years to solve it with brute force with todays best computers...

4x4 was 2:15 i think for me.

This has to be a computing power thing...

Re: Eternity II

Interesting...

There's 256 pieces, which can be arranged in 256 factorial ways. That's a huge number - my windows calculator shows it's 8.6x10^506.

It's actually a bit smaller because the corner and edge pieces can only be placed certain way.

But then again, all pieces can be rotated.

I think the formula for 256 pieces that can be rotated 4 ways that do NOT have borders and corners is 4^256 x 256! = 10^661 or so.

That number of combinations is, of course, impossible to compute.

I was thinking more along the lines of the computer chooses a piece at random and matches it to an available edge that would make it fit.

Dunno much about computers though.

I think the creators are smart enough to avoid creating a puzzle that could be solved quickly by brute force

Re: Eternity II

At attempt to solve this with computing power would take more than just brute force, you would need to develop some pretty good algorithms to cut down on the number of permutations to make it possible.

What can humans do so well that we couldn't teach a program to do?

Man, this would be a great project for an AI programming course.

I solved it and it said "Sorry, your solution does not match any of the successful combinations in our database."

Re: Eternity II

How did you manage that - I worked on your solution and got the congratulations message ?

But following the thread Eternity II does look awesome... I know you normally give up work AFTER winning $2 million... but could you give up work BEFORE and then work on the solution

Official site is here http://www.eternityii.com - looks like it launches in a few hours - anyone seen it in the shops yet ?

Re: Eternity II

Hi everyone,

I have been looking for a forum with people talking about Eternity 2. I have completed the online one in 1 min 10 sec's and thought it was quite easy.

I have since bought the full 256 puzzle but have a question.

There are 2 clue puzzles to buy, complete and get clues to the 256 one. my question is. Its says there there are many ways to complete the 256 puzzle so how can the clue puzzles help everyone. The clues given might not work for someone has already started the puzzle with there own method. This is because there are many way to complete the puzzle.

Thx

Re: Eternity II

Looking on Wiki there is one additional constraint:

Piece 139 has to go in a specified place in the
center of the board.

There are 22 different colors not counting the
grey edges.

A usefull program to play eternity ii on computer:
http://www.intellisol.hu

There's a E2 edge pattern set (not the piece set) available somewhere on the net for this program.

Here it is: http://rapidshare.com/files/52724053...mages.zip.html
It takes time to define the piece set, but you can play easily after that...

Holy lurkers Batman!

Edit: Oh, I didn't realize this was an old thread. There must be a dearth of Eternity II resources out there.
