John From Cincinnati - 7/22
We agree that separate threads for each week is better than that 1 thread, right?
"The big money is in escrow for anyone who can tell me WTF is going on" Linc took the words out of my mouth. I've come too far to stop watching now, but the show makes less sense each week. I'm totally taken by the surf culture - I guess that is what hooks me into this still. |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
This show confuses me more and more each week - but I'm still really digging it. I know it's been said every week but Shaun is really the worst actor ever. That scene where he started 'crying' at Bill's house about wanting to die was some of the most laughable acting I've ever seen. My two year old fake cries better than he does (complete with hands up to cover his face). Just brutal.
That being said - I'm loving how they set up these characters (Cass, Linc) as bad guys and now they're not really on the 'bad' side anymore. Should make for some interesting developments. |

So we don't end up with multiple threads that consist of 10 posts. But whatever. Weird episode. After the close of last week's, I figured that we had come upon some shift in the overall arc, but I didn't expect that shift to focus mostly on Linc/Palaka. |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
I was dead tired and kept falling asleep, which is a really hard way to watch this show.
Becoming unreasonably obsessed with Cas. She's sooooo [censored] adorable. |

Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
I think John was levitating. It was hard to tell, but that's what I thought right away.
|
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
The only thing I gathered from this episode is that Cass is supposed to film some miracles and spread the word of John - "without the zeros and ones its all [censored]," or whatever that quote was.

Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
I haven't been reading most of the threads about this show, mostly because I've been watching them so late. But each week, I become closer to giving up on it.
I never like it when people post complaints on threads that are really meant for the fans. But I am curious whether my general reaction to the show is the same as others here. Is there a consensus -- among people at OOT who were looking forward to this show at the start of the season - whether the series is even worth watching at this point? |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
Wynton,
I love it, but that's because 1- I could listen to Milch written dialog forever 2- I love that I have no clue what's going on. It's probably not the best show if you dig on 24/Entourage/Prison Break. The only really lousy asepct of the show is that there's two reasonably horrible actors (the kid, Kai) and one character that's just so loathesome you want her off screen (Sissy). The rest is amazing to me. |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
Dids,
I was a huge fan of Deadwood (much more so than 24 and the like), and because of that perhaps, have been quite disappointed by the show for a variety of reasons. But as I said before, I'm not here to spoil anyone's fun, just wondering whether my view (for Milch fans) is the minority or majority view. |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
I'm not giving up on it, but if the rest of the season is like this, I won't continue with the second season.
I'm intrigued by the preview that Shaun will soon be gone. That could be good news. Pros: Bill Steady Freddy / Palaka The Doc The whole hotel crew (especially Ramon). John Cons: Shaun Sissy Linc Cass (sorry Dids, she annoys the hell out of me). Butchie Impartial to: Mitch Vietnam Joe Kai Tina Blake |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
I thought Shaun was much improved this week.

I was also a big fan of Deadwood, but am really disappointed with this show. I keep watching it like a sucker each week, though. I keep hoping that something good will *finally* happen. I thought that we were getting close to something good happening after last week's show, but was disappointed when nothing noteworthy happened this week. Also, what happened to Bruce Greenwood? He just suddenly disappeared, though all the characters keep mentioning how he's in Mexico or something. His disappearance seems kind of abrupt, considering that he was introduced as one of main characters in the original episode. |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
It's wierd how all the minor characters at the hotel and including Al Bundy are all well-written and the surf family/Luke Perry clan are all annoying. Why did the writers think that having a family full of complete [censored] would jive with a surf culture/supernatural setting?

[/ QUOTE ] I think it's more a product of certain actors not being able to handle the difficult dialogue. The best characters seem to belong to the actors who were previously on Deadwood (plus Ed O'neill). The rest of the actors don't seem natural when they speak their dialogue. They seem to be trying hard not to become tongue-tied. |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
That's exactly what annoys the [censored] out of me about Cass. Her speech rhythm is just awful.
I do think Butchie does a decent job. |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
the guy that plays Butchie is a solid actor

However, a big problem with this show is that the awful actors are SO awful that they completely overshadow the good performances. |
Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
oops.. looks like I put Butchie in the cons by mistake. I edited to specifically put him in the pros. My bad.

Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
Mitch Yost needs to get back in the show.

Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
Well I'm through ep 6, and my excitement has waned. I'm on the fence about forging ahead.
FYI Milch is not credited as a writer for any but the first episode. Is it accepted that he does a lot of the dialogue even if not directly credited? |

[/ QUOTE ] wow,i was about to give up on the show after episode five cause i wasn't too bothered with it,but that scene at the end of episode six is what made me decide to stick with it,it was pretty spectacular. i wouldn't say its going to be worth watching the show if that didn't do it for you. as for this weeks episode,i dunno,i don't really care about surfing culture or linc, and the spiros guy was just annoying me... i loved when cissy showed up at the hotel and ramon was all "im gonna go over here now so i don't have to deal with her tone of voice"! |

Re: John From Cincinnati - 7/22
I love this show but one thing that annoys me for some reasons is how they keep referring to Palaka as a "dwarf", "the little guy", etc. and how he's bullied around. I just can't believe the character when it's Paul Ben-Victor playing him. I don't like the casting there.
