Diddy Riese Cookies - Westwood, CA

http://www.slashfood.com/media/2006/01/diddyriese.jpg

For those not from the area: Diddy Riese is a legendary cookie store in Westwood, right off the UCLA campus. They have awesome fresh baked cookies that used to be $0.25 (now $0.35) and create-your-own ice cream sandwiches for $1.00 (now $1.25). Great eats, great price. If you are ever in the area, stop by and try them, you won't be disappointed. Just be warned, the lines are long if you hit it at the wrong time.
Wiki

For those that are familiar: I haven't been in a couple years, but there's a work function tomorrow that I want to bring Diddy Riese to now that I live in the area. What are the must haves if I get a couple dozen or so? My personal fave is the cinnamon sugar. I seem to remember lots of people raving about oatmeal raisin and macadamia nut, both not favorite cookie types of mine, but they may do well served to the large group.

I appreciate any help and hope I inspired some of you to enjoy the greatness that is Diddy Riese.

This is an amazing concept that I wish I had thought of before. My mind is blown.

I went there a couple years back while visiting a friend at UCLA. Only tried the oatmeal raisin ice cream sandwich, but loved it.

Anyone in the LA area has got to go. They also have small orange juices.

With the cookie selection and the ice cream selection, you could have a different sandwich everytime you are there.

I've considered franchising Diddy Riese out several times in college. I bet many others have done the same while waiting in a line 50 deep. The pricing and quality is amazing compared to Mrs. Fields and other ripoff cookie places.

And small milks. I remember when it was $0.25/cookie, they used to have the $1.00 three cookie and a milk special...which was the same price as buying them seperately. Still, a nice little meal.

Found a pic (I think...came up on Google and looks right). $1.25 will get you one of these (my dinner tonight!)...

They also randomly sell hot dogs, which should clinch it for any of you fence-sitters. Diddy Riese, BIMO.

This place is beyond incredible. Words really can't do it justice. How they were able to make money selling an ice cream sandwich with two premium cookies for a dollar is one of the great mysteries of all time.

Are the dogs any good? I don't think I ever touched them.

FYI, the other staple of any UCLA student diet is a little shack not far from Diddy Riese that makes subs that we used to call "Buck Fifty Subs". They are more than $1.50 now and I really have no idea what the real name of the place is. It's probably about $2 now.

FYI: The good ol' days I am talking about was only 1996-2000, so you can see how ridiculous these prices are in our modern times.

It must be good if someone with a Trojan avatar is giving it props.

BTW, who let you in to Westwood? Your kind is supposed to be stopped before you cross Wilshire.

It's not quite a Costco dog, but I mean it's a hot dog! A cheap one at a cookie shop! And it doesn't taste like the shriveled dogs they keep on the rolling metal pin machine at 7-11! Well... it sorta does. Oh well.

Now you have me thinking about Diddy Riese and Hurry Curry.

Brave Fluffpop lost her legs,
by chain shot, by chain shot;
Brave Fluffpop lost her legs,
by chaiiiiiin shot.
Brave Fluffpop lost her legs,
And now on her stumps she begs,
"Fight on, my SoCal lads!
'Tis our lot, 'tis our lot."

Her surgeon dress'd her wounds,
Fluffpop cries, Fluffpop cries.
Her surgeon dress'd her wounds,
Fluffpop criiiiiies -
'Let a cradle now be plac'd
On the quarterdeck in haste!
That the enemy I may face,
'til I die, 'til I die!'

'Admiral Fluffpop,' ladies and gentlemen. Thank you!

They were planning one to build one in SD but I have no idea what happened to that plan. And yes Diddy Reese is my choice of dessert places in Westwood. Pinkberry tried to sway me away when it first opened but only after a while did i know i was belonged to Diddy Reese.

Never tried the hotdog though. Will try next time.

Should be "Roll-in" which is $3.50 I think now for an 8-inch sub (lots of choices of meat). 100 ft south of In&Out on Gayley.

Diddy Reese was great, but I loved the Cinnamon Sugar + Rainbow Sherbet combo the best. They've gotten rid of Rainbow Sherbet for whatever reason, but there's still tons of great combos. They're really fast too, having ~4-5 workers (who might or might not be citizens). Great place, A+.

For the more upscale taste, Pinkberry (either Westwood & Kinross or Westwood & Lindbrook, don't remember), is a great frozen yogurt place that lets you put toppings and stuff on it.

Re: Diddy Riese Cookies - Westwood, CA

Lame Trip Report:

I arrive at Diddy Riese at about 6:30PM. The line is about 10 people long, but moving fast. I figure I’ll take 2 dozen cookies for work. There are 10 varieties of cookies, so I figure I’ll just pick out 6 kinds in groups of 4. I get to the front and start picking away, skipping over a couple that are just white chocolate chip versions of other cookies. F’ anyone that prefers white chocolate over regular chocolate. I get to 2 dozen before I get to the end of the line, where the chocolate cookies are, so I have him add on 4 chocolate chocolate chips (EDIT: LOL, just realized that I got chocolate white chocolate chip...dammit). The resulting bag…

http://www.daveyg.com/Pictures/DiddyRieseBag.jpg

For myself, I order regular chocolate chip cookies, surrounding mint chip ice cream, knowing I was in for complete awesomeness. The sandwich…

http://www.daveyg.com/Pictures/DiddyRieseSandwich.jpg

Total bill: $10.10. Too awesome.

So, I go outside and sit in a sidewalk seat to enjoy my ice cream sandwich heaven. I take my pictures and take a bite. So [censored] good. Just like I remembered it.

While sitting there, two Asian girls are walking down the sidewalk (Am I racist for pointing out they are Asian? If yes, please start a thread on it.). One girl turns into a sandwich shop next door when this conversation happens between the girls and the table of 6 guys sitting in front of the restaurant, right in front of me…

Asian girl #1: No, not there, Diddy Reise
Asian girl #2: Huh?
Asian girl #1: Over there. The cookie place.
Asian girl #2: A cookie place? (See table of guys staring at her) Sorry guys, I’m not from around here. I’m not even American.
Guy at table #1: Really? You don’t have any accent at all.
Asian girl #2: I’m from the United Nations. (WTF that means, I don’t know)
Guys at table: …
Guy at table #2: Diddy Riese is great. Get an ice cream cookie sandwich.
Asian girl #2: That sounds disgusting. (Sees me eating such a sandwich)
Me: No, it’s awesome. You should try one.
Asian girl #2: Ewww. That’s like having a hamburger and beer together.
Me: Uhhh, that sounds pretty good, too.
Asian girl #2: Ummm, no.

And they walk off, Asian girl #1 looking really embarrassed by her friend. As they do, I make a mental note to never dine in the United Nations cafeteria.

Hahahaha, that's actually a pretty awesome trip report.

I got rocky road with white chocolate chip cookies . It was delicious and I had no idea that Westwood would be crackin' like it was on a Thursday in the middle of the summer... The line was like 20 or 25 deep and Habibi across the street was as busy as ever.

There's a United Nations school in NYC (UNIS), which was established for the kids of UN workers. Could be her parents are diplomats.

I can't remember what the restaurants were before, but I noticed that there's a hooka place on each side of the street now. I guess that's the new college trend or something.

I thought it was pretty busy in Westwood too, considering it was summer. That was more like how busy I was used to school years being.
