2007 USPC

Why is there no information on this series?

It's held every year at the Taj but their site doesn't have any info about it.

What month was it held in 06 and 05?

Re: 2007 USPC

Disappointingly, ESPN will not be filming the event this year. Perhaps the Taj is trying to work out a different tv deal before posting the schedule, because I agree it's strange that dates have not been released with the tournament just a couple months away.

I went to the Taj for the first time and I have to say, I was very disappointed with the size of the room. I was just imaging it being huge. Like wasn't it the largest poker room in AC until the Borg expanded?

I was told the same thing by Andrew Feldman who works for ESPN when I was in LV for the WSOP,but sadly he did not have a reason why !

They have another room near the poker room that they use for weekend tournaments. They probably have conference rooms they can use for their major tournament if they need to, but I don't think this tournament draws a huge field.

The poker room is smaller than Commerce, Foxwoods, and Borgata, and maybe one or two more. I don't think there is anything bigger in Vegas or outside the US.

I anticipated ESPN's decision to drop the USPC with 2 years left in the rights fee agreement (which was done in 2004).

Why?

ESPN has already paid for enough poker, 32 hours each year from Harrah's/WSOP.

There is really no room for ESPN to fit the USPC without having the USPC being buried as counterprogramming on ESPN2.

Besides, ESPN can always sell time to the likes of FullTiltPoker.net so that "time buy" made-for-TV poker, such as the Pro-Am Equalizer, can air on ESPN.

The only thing that is worth a rights fee these days in the eyes of a big network such as ESPN is the WSOP.

Remember that ESPN was interested in the WPT and PPT at one time. The business has changed dramatically in the past 12 months. WPT had to go to GSN in order to get a rights fee after Travel Channel dropped it due to high rights fee and relatively low ratings compared to the past.

NBC Heads-Up, the #1 TV poker show in the US in terms of average viewers, is safe for another year. I will be pitching to the NBC Heads-Up executive producer the 2007 World Champion in Jerry Yang, the 1st German to past $1 million in career tournament earnings who did the "JAAAAAAA, JAAAAAAAAA, YESSSSSSS" celebration on ESPN in Andreas Krause, and the only Russian with $2 million in career tournament earnings in Alexander Kravchenko.

I signed Krause several weeks ago to pursue a 1-year deal with an online poker "school" after I got him the 1-day deal with FullTiltPoker.net at an ESPN TV Final table.

I have a verbal commitment from Yang to retain me to do more work for him and I will need to hammer out a legal document with Yang in the next few weeks.

As for Kravchenko: he wants agents to do everything on a non-exclusive, handshake basis. He is essentially the "J.C. Tran" of Russia when it comes to doing business away from the table.

But if the producers want to sell the show to a Russian TV outfit to make more money, which Russian player would you want to invite? Kravchenko? Kirill? Ralph Perry?

Kravchenko is the obvious choice for 2008 with his 6 WSOP cashes in 2007 (plus a WPT cash at Mandalay Bay).

A lively Russian contingent in the stands screaming ROS-SI-YA! ROS-SI-YA! and waving a Russian flag will more than make up for the stoic personality of Kravchenko. Check out the ESPN video from the Main Event to air on October 9.

FullTiltPoker.net will hold a televised event in Germany (to air as "time buy" TV on German sports TV network DSF) during the first week of October. (I am prepared to travel to Germany for that one, as I anticipate having 2 or more clients entered in that event.)

PokerStars.net will have European Poker Tour (EPT) stops in London on September 25-29 and in Baden, Austria (near Vienna) on October 7-10.

UltimateBet.net/AbsolutePoker.net will hold its event in Aruba on October 2-6 (to air as "time buy" TV on GSN in the US and Canada in December.)

WPT will hold its annual stop in Europe at Casino Barcelona on October 11-16.

--

In other words, the USPC will be squeezed by a number of competing events, all of which have TV coverage.

I predict a field of less than 100 players at the 2007 USPC $10K buy-in event.

NickMPK 07-26-2007 02:36 PM

Re: 2007 USPC NOT on ESPN

I'd be surprised if they got less than 100 players...there are plenty of local AC players who might play in this event but who aren't going to travel to Europe or Aruba for a poker tournament.

It certainly won't get as many as it would with TV coverage, but the event last year lost most of it's "big name" pros to the ill-conceived PPL draft and it still drew >250. The overlap between last year's Taj tournament players and the EPT isn't very large, and probably consists mostly of young internet players rather than AC locals.

I can understand why ESPN isn't giving this the sort of coverage it got the past 3 years, but I'm surprised they aren't even going to film the final table since like they did prior to 2004.

There is no reason for ESPN to pay "rights fees" to buy any more TV poker products besides the WSOP when 1) the online poker "schools" are now willing to put their branded shows on ESPN as "time buys", and 2) 32 hours of original programming from the WSOP are more than enough for ESPN to run over and over again to make money via online poker advertising.

(PokerStars.net has resumed airing TV advertising in the U.S., with Daniel Negreanu being the pitch man.)

I worked on a chess event with ESPN2 in 2003, they paid the production costs and got the rights, we got a couple of ad spots and the show produced for free. HUGE win win, especially because I was told that ESPN has to pay tons of cash just to replay the world's strongest man, which is very sickening.

All "sports" time-buys on ABC are handled by ESPN, Inc. because the "ABC Sports" business unit was dismantled several years ago, even before the "ABC Sports" brand was obliterated in favor of the "ESPN on ABC" branding.

Poker PROductions bought time with ESPN, Inc. to place the Pro Am Equalizer on a block of time on a TV channel that was controlled by ESPN, Inc. That channel ultimately turned out to be ESPN.

I picked up a schedule for all events and satellites this past weekend. Looks like they added alot of satellites to try and build the field this year. Mostly 110's and 220's. Seems to be more of them than I remember from last year. At least they have the automatic shufflers this year.

I will play in the smaller events probably, mostly the Limit events. The one thing i like about the USPC is the variety of tournaments compared to other casinos.

Example, borgata tournament series usualyl spread 90% NL with 1 limit holdem and 1 stud event. USPC has multiple stud and omaha events.

I will try to sat my way into the larger event.

My only disappointment is the increase in rake in smaller events. IIRC last year the $300 events last year were raked at $40 not $50.

yes this is correct, smaller events are always raked more but its starting to get more annoying.

last years buyins:
http://www.pokerpages.com/tournament/schedule2330.htm

this years:
http://www.trumptaj.com/index.cfm/nodeID...on/content.page

you can see that rake went up $10 on all $300 and $500 events.

3 years ago it was only $35 on a $300 event, i sound nitty, but i'm just wondering at what point they will stop increasing the rake.
At least at the Borgata summer open they increased the juice as well but made $300 events $350 + $50 instead of $300 + $50 making it a little better than jacking the rake only. /end rant

NO CHANCE. ZERO.

There is no valid reason for any online poker entity to run satellites into untelevised events in which the online poker entity will NOT be able to generate advertising "impressions" on television.
