Beat: Party tries to rob the Brits

But Brag - I found out a way to get past this!!

Just wondered if anyone else is in the same boat as me? I am in the UK and play on Party. Whenever I cash out I am always pretty disgusted at the amounts they charge to send it to my switch/debit card here in the UK.
For example, I had $13732 in there this morning. To cash that out I would get £6548 go into my bank account.

BUT

If you update your profile and change your preferred currency to GBP from USD it magically changes to £6752. I can then just cash this out to my bank (£1.50 fee) and Party's FOUR HUNDRED BUCKS of charges just disappear!!!

I wonder why they haven't advertised this feature!!!

I've been using a USD neteller account. Makes things easy but atm I do only get £480 for $1k after netellers 1.9% charge.

Could be Actually, I just noticed there is a post about this in MSNL (the Party thread) and I think Party are accepting that it's a bit of a rip-off. Maybe it will change, or maybe I'll just believe anything!

Go to "cashout".

You have 5 options across the top. Home, Deposit, Cashout, Contact Us and Help.

Click on Home.

Then "Update your profile". The option to change it is in there.

You have to be logged out of Party Poker to update this.

And if you ever want to change it back again you will have to email support. I am just going to do this every time I want to cashout.

Ah, thats probably what the problem is. I'm trying from work while I'm datamining at home. I changed it before to EUR, then changed it back to USD because of the inconvenience. I didn't realise i was getting screwed.

I'm also in the UK. I just did as you said and changed my account from dollars to sterling. So that means I now won't have to pay any conversion fees at all, just the $1.50 charge?

Wait hold on if my account is GBP when I sit at a table it converts it to USD for that table... When I sit off that table wont I of been screwed from exchange rates?

MilkMan 07-16-2007 09:03 AM

Re: Beat: Party tries to rob the Brits

So if you change your account from dollars to sterling, what exchange rate do party use internally to convert? A different one to the (ripoff) one they use when you cashout dollars to a sterling account? That is borderline criminal.

I havent bothered to work that out. As soon as I cashed out this morning (in GBP) I asked them to convert it back to USD. Maybe someone can look into that.

No matter what way you do it, your always going to get screwed by exchange rate.

CopTHIS 07-16-2007 09:11 AM

Re: Beat: Party tries to rob the Brits

It's the changing one way and then back again I'm not certain of. I'd rather play in $s, cos at least you know exactly what is going on etc. What happens if you change the whole lot to $s, then cash out some in local currency, then change what's left back? Do you lose on the switch?

Without thinking too deeply, I guess Party can't screw you too bad on switching within the site if they use the same rate to convert when you join and leave a table - because if that happened you could play a bit, break even, and still end up with less in your account despite the real exchange rate not changing.

Re: Beat: Party tries to rob the Brits

This whole genius plan kind of hinges on the fact that Party actually give you a fair rate when they convert your account. Hmmm.

CopTHIS 07-16-2007 09:16 AM

Re: Beat: Party tries to rob the Brits

I was told a little while ago by a friend that he had about 12k or something on a site (not sure which one) and 6 months later it was 20k without playing a hand. He just switched currency at good times (either because of the lag the site used or the rounding). I doubt that was Party, and I'm not sure he still does it, but it's not certain that all sites act in a [censored] way over converting monies.

for people not using eur/gbp as their homeland currency(like me from sweden), can we do anything about this or are we stuck using shtty exchange rates when cashing out?

luckyjimm 07-16-2007 09:45 AM

Re: Beat: Party tries to rob the Brits

Sounds like you can in effect use Party to play the currency markets.

Let's say years ago back when it was $1.6 to £1 you deposited $20,000 then changed your account to sterling, you would have £12,500. Then when it hits $2 to £1 you change back to dollars, and it's worth $25,000. However your expected earnings from playing good poker at Party in this period would have been much higher than a measley five grand! And I'm sure the reason you have to email support to change currency more than once is precisely to stop this.

notreallymyname 07-16-2007 09:52 AM

Re: Beat: Party tries to rob the Brits

The currency conversion charge applies to changing your account currency too (this is documented), feel free to change it repeatedly if you don't mind losing your roll 3% at a time.

Re: Beat: Party tries to rob the Brits

He's still better off if he gets more for his cashout. Since his balance after cashout is zero, switching back doesnt cost him anything.
