Biggest Waste of Talent in Sports History?

I nominate Mike Tyson, but it would be interesting to hear some other opinions.

Darryl Strawberry

Chris Washburn

Michael Ray Richardson

Mark Gastinaue

Steve Howe

None of these dudes can blame it on injuries either. 4 of them were drug addicts, and Gastinaue walked away to bang Briggette Nielson and become a really bad boxer.

Ricky Williams, Rich Harden, and Mark Prior are about 100 levels DOWN on the talent meter from guys like Strawberry and Gooden.

Two different classes IMO.

Re: Biggest Waste of Talent in Sports History?

prior has gotten hurt which isnt his fault

no way that strawberry is more of a waste than gooden
gooden couldve been as good as clemens
strawberry would have been a very good power hitter but not an all time great

Not Mark Prior. He was the best amateur pitcher of all-time.

You might not remember how good he was at USC, but trust me, he was the next Roger Clemens.

Thinking Bo was a waste is idiotic. The man was a stud in two different professional sports. A debilitating hip injury that ended his career doesn't make him a waste of talent.

Len Bias...JR Rider...Alexandre Daigle...Alexei Yashin...Todd Marinovich...Ryan Leaf...not Bo Jackson.

Most of the players nominated so far had notable professional success. How could you possibly nominate Tyson? He reached the pinacle of his sport.

Len Bias is a good option. Brien Taylor is worth considering in baseball.

What makes him elite? He was a very good college running back who had four decent years in the pros. I'm not sure how any of this qualifies him as either elite, or a waste of talent.

He won the heisman broke the collage rushing record while starting over priest holmes. He lead the league in rushing with the dolphins horrible O-line and terrible qb/passing game. Then he proceeded to throw it all away cause he couldn't pass a drug test.

yeah but grant hill was actually an elite player for a while. Vince literally has wasted all his abilities.

Reggie Lewis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reggie Lewis (November 21, 1965 – July 27, 1993) was a basketball player for the Boston Celtics from 1987—1993. He averaged 20.8 points per game in each of his last two seasons with the Celtics, and finished with a career average of 17.6 points per contest. His #35 jersey was retired by the Celtics as a memorial to him.

Born in Baltimore, Lewis played his college ball in Boston at Northeastern University, where his retired uniform number now hangs in tribute in Matthews Arena.

Lewis played along side fellow Celtics greats like Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. He became the sixth captain of the Celtics, taking over from Larry Bird. In his first and only year of leading the team, he brought the Celtics to the 1993 playoffs. In the first game of the playoffs against the Charlotte Hornets, his heart ailment (which would later claim his life) caused him to collapse.

Lewis died when he had a heart attack on the basketball court at an off-season practice in 1993 at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

And Clarett is a good one too. He's one of the only guys on this list that wasn't hurt, or involved with drugs. Just a [censored] idiot.
