Poker in Reno vs. South Lake Tahoe

Going to be in the area Aug 29th-Sept 4th (over Labor Day if that makes a difference) and will be within 40 minutes of either Reno or South Lake Tahoe. I know both have poker but I wasn't sure if I should focus on one or the other or spread my time between both places. I prefer to play 1/2 NL up to 5/10 NL. Any thoughts/recommendations greatly appreciated. Take care

You won't find 5/10 NL. Just go to the Peppermill in Reno for 1/2 and maybe some 2/5 NL.

El Dorado in downtown Reno used to have a 2/3/5 10 to come in uncapped game. No idea if it still runs - I haven't been to Reno since last winter's snowy pot-of-gold.

Was planning to go to Tahoe tomorrow night to check out the action. I haven't been there for awhile and it is summer season so I'm interested to see what is going on. I need a change from Reno anyway, tired of playing with the same people.

Aren't the weekends good in Reno? It would seem the influx of tourists on the weekends would make the Reno games good, and should see less regulars at the table?

Scott,

Let me know how the trip to Tahoe goes. Someone mentioned a 2/3/5 10 to come in at the El Dorado in Reno. Do they still spread that (would be right up my alley)? Thanks

you wont find games as good as the ones in tahoe. 3-5NL 1000$ cap on the game, I deal it nightly, and its just incredible. Plus people playing in tahoe are generally classy happy people, you just cant go wrong. AND its celebrity golf week in tahoe, so you will prob be playing with Don Cheadle, Roy Green, Niel Lomax, and many others. Renos not bad, but the 3-5-10 at El dorado has some good players in it....theres usually never even 1 in tahoe. my two cents....and im an expert on this specific issue plus there is another ten 2-3 300 cap NL games which are incredibly soft. Tahoe is very +ev, fresh air beautiful women bla bla bla

Re: Poker in Reno vs. South Lake Tahoe

Games in tahoe are much better plus tahoe is just more fun than reno. I had a hell of a time finding a good NL game in Reno, as tables were short handed and everyone was playing limit. Tahoe had a lot of NL tables at different stakes and most of the players were extremly bad but very happy to gamble gamble gamble.

Thanks for the info Ace,

That sounds like the perfect situation. You mentioned you deal the 3-5NL game nightly. It sounds like its spread every night, is that the case? Also, is it spread during the day or mainly just at night? Thanks again!

Re: Poker in Reno vs. South Lake Tahoe

generally every night during the summer, but certainly 5 nights a week, (monday and wed its spread 80% of the time, this summer has been slow). You wont be dissapointed all around.

Re: Poker in Reno vs. South Lake Tahoe

I will let you know how it is. I am mostly a mid-limit player so I am still adjusting to NL.

I think the El Dorado still has the big NL game but it has some very wealthy, tight, and good players in it. The pots can get big but you better be holding the nuts or the other guy will be.

I used to fool around in the 4/8 limit game for the bad beat jackpot but the 1/2 NL game killed it and the 1/2 NL game is hard to beat the $5 rake.

There are more people on the weekends but I play mostly mid-limit and I still know 2/3 or more of the table on the weekends.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I'm headed to South Lake Tahoe. I'm there Aug 29th-Sept 4th and will be at the tables at least 5 hrs a day so I might run into ya. The names Bob from the San Fran Bay area (just moved there from Colorado). I'll be the guy wearing a blue hat that says Bubba on it. Kind of a dumb hat actually but since I won a tourney wearing it, it’s become my "playing poker" hat. Imagine that, a gambler who's a little superstitious.

Re: Poker in Reno vs. South Lake Tahoe

What a night. There were about 10 tables going when I got there at 7:00pm. The mix was 3 3/6 limit games and then the rest were 1/2, 2/3, and 3/5 nl games. Don Chittle from Ocean's 13 was playing a 2/3 NL, and I heard Michael Jordan was at Harrahs playing 5k a hand BJ.

I got on the list for the 3/5 and they got a short handed must move going in about 30 min. We started with 4 and filled up pretty quickly. My high point was up about 150 when I got KK 3 times in about 10 hands. Each time I would raise and get 2-4 callers and an Ace would flop. The second time 2 aces came on the flop. I did a small continuation bet and then just checked it down. Lost every hand. That got me to about 400 and I basically got blinded off or call fold on some flops. I played until 12:30 and lost 300. How long can you be card dead. I have been doing it for 1.5 months now.

As far as the rest of the game goes, it was juicy. Plenty of action and players re-buying the 1k max. There were a few good players that you had to respect but half the table were fish too. Half the table was doing a 10 live straddle so each pot was worth winning.

Bottom line, the games were great and I look forward to going back real soon.

Where was this? What's the difference between 1/2 and 2/3 besides a dollar?

Lake Tahoe, NV. I don't know the diff. I didn't play them. I would guess not much.

I'm going to south lake tahoe, i'll be there thursday mid day and leaving sunday mid day. I've never been before, and only going to check out the action as I've seen in this thread. I'll be spending a few days at Fallen Leaf Lake before hand.. I'm leaving for there tonight and staying through wednesday.

Ace: What casino do you deal at?

Where do you recommend staying? I'll be playing the 3/5 NL

thanks

Re: Poker in Reno vs. South Lake Tahoe

hey eof. Couldnt of picked a better time to come, its just amazing weather right now. I deal at Harveys, which honestly, is the best game in town. You can play at Mount Blu (old ceasars) or the lakeside Inn, but realistically, other than for tournaments (mt blu) there is absolutley no reason to play anywhere other than Harveys, the action is great, and the people that frequent our games arent good, but have money. One thing to note about poker in Lake Tahoe, which some folks may be unaware of, our rushes are late rushes. We maintain steady business from 12:00pm til 6pm, then it actually dies a little, but we practically double our games from 8pm to 11pm. Its just so beautiful outside, and there is so much to do, that generally you will find people arent coming into the casino until after dinner. As for a place to stay... honestly with living here, i never really know what rates are the best. I am under the impression that the rates at the casions are as good as the rates at the local hotels. But I cant be sure. All of the lodging is almost in the same location, so theres no real advantage to staying here vs there in that regard. Hope that helps. I am off Thur, Fri, but ill surely see ya on the weekend.

Weekends are spendy at the "Big 4". Usually between $150 and $250 a night.

Re: Poker in Reno vs. South Lake Tahoe

Tahoe (Harvey's) has a consistant 2-3 and 3-5NL games with multiple table for the 2-3NL on ocassion they have a 5-10 which gets real juicy but only on big weekends.
Reno 1-2 NL at the peppermill and I think 2-5 at the el dorado but mostly tight games very little action

I just got back home from two weeks in South Lake Tahoe. Had a blast, played the 2-3 NL game at Harvey's the whole time. Oh my are those soft games. Unfortunately I was card dead most of the time and didn't get to capitalize on it much. Had a blast though. Super friendly room and nice dealers. (acemanhattan, what's your first name?) Played with Don Cheadle for a bit. Good times.

If you were going to rate the games in Tahoe/Reno in order of juiciest what would it be? Are the rooms in Reno or Tahoe busier during the week?

For something different, try the $10-$20 Crazy Pineapple Hi/Lo at the Hyatt in Incline.

Re: Poker in Reno vs. South Lake Tahoe

Howdy. A number of friends are going up to Tahoe for the Labor Day weekend, and I was thinking about joining them. They want to hike in the woods and the like. I, of course, want to play poker. Looks like I'll be stopping in at Harvey's this weekend.

Bob, are you still going to be there? Are any other 2+2ers going?

Just a question about the games for those who know them. Which chips play in the 2/3 game? My usual routine is to pick up a couple extra $20 chips (which play in my local 1/2 game) to top off if I lose a hand or two. Would it be frowned on if I dropped a green ($25) chip or two on top of my stack?

Not that this will help, but I'll be the fat balding white guy in casual dress. No, that probably didn't help.
