facebook modules

hey all,

i've had some free time recently and being a web developer by trade, i've contemplated building something on the facebook platform. So, any ideas/thoughts/comments/suggestions? Some of the most liked modules are pretty damn simple and easy to build...so, lets hear some....

nope, sorry, the millions are all mine now, HAHAHAHAHAHAH...

(but if you mean what to name the app, i'll take suggestions there as well...i was going to go with something really futuristic and hot sounding like 'chat' but if you have some cool names feel free!)

facebook will never be myspace...but you think the chat option is just bad? i would think it'd be kinda nice to have a built in chat client if you want when you're browsing the site...

Fwiw, the ability to use an open api to write apps is basically proof that facebook is not myspace.

Exactly...btw, it looks like you can't use javascript in profile apps, so any sort of snazzy real time chat is kinda out......but, keep the ideas coming!

Re: facebook modules

sounds a bit difficult, but listing the number of mutual friends you have with your existing friends.

pretty sick if you could do it for people you are not friends with (people have the option of displaying their friends list via "view friends" to strangers)

i was looking into this today and it shouldnt' be that difficult actually. I can query for the friends of a given person, so finding the intersection of two queries wouldn't be that bad...they don't already have something like this?

As for the second part, it'd be a little more difficult. I suppose I could harvest all of the friends for every account and then show a list of friends you share with others....

Anyone else like this? (thx yellowjack!)

As a bit of clarification I just want to say that I think most of the Facebook apps are pretty stupid. I swear to god if anyone every superpokes me I might not handle it well.

Evan,

I can imagine so...as I mentioned, I've never really used it much, kind of got hot after I got out of school....but your point is a great one--if most are stupid, then lets think of something cool. Maybe there just isn't one, but i'd bet thats not true...anyway, thx for the thoughts.

Eh, it's really nothing like myspace. If you think they're both too cluttered that's one thing, but the ways in which they become cluttered are completely different, both in form and in function.

How about a way to block pictures from displaying of designated people, even though they are still your facebook friend. Annoying to have to see pictures of ex-gf partying when browsing through newest albums/photos/newsfeed/whatever.

i can understand the desire, but i think thats a builtin piece of functionality they won't let developers modify...

They're both overly cluttered and distracting, so I dunno what you're arguing about Evan

Just go to privacy on your facebook and you can block all that stuff from people you dont want to see it from (also useful for people who seem to do 1billion changes a day on facebook)

ever had someone say to you "when you have sex with someone, you're also having sex with everyone they had sex with, and everyone all those people had sex with" etc. it would be kinda cool to have an application where everyone could enter the names of people they've banged, and see how far the tree branches out.
