Profanity filter
So, I was just wondering this after reading the avatar thread.
Why does the profanity filter really exist? Is it really that bad for people to be allowed to write shi* or fu*k or other words like that? I made a list of current posts the other day in the Nate banning thread. This is what I found from a 5-minute glance at a few forums: -- Phil Ivey is a strip club degen in this thread we name investments better than staking TJ Famous poker player caught in bed w/ another poker players' wife? Which poker players look like they do drugs? Card Runners Tech support is a joke. Sexual variance WTF my farts smell so bad they are preventing me from sleeping Threeway turns weird--hot or not? Girls & PhotoBucket Accounts *** NSFW *** Beat: Made out w/ fattie in public Best Jerking off session of my life How do I stop my girlfriend making sounds during sex? ask me about being the happiest guy alive (i.e. I just rubbed one out) is smoking a blunt or eating mcdonalds worse for you? Friend pisses in my bed.... -- I find it weird that these topics are allowed to be carried on at 2+2, while standard profanities are filtered. To me, much of the discussion on 2+2 is far, far, far more offensive and inappropriate than lots of the words that are censored. Anyhow, I'm not really pushing for change or anything. I was just curious about the background of this decision and was wondering how other mods/admins felt about it. |
Re: Profanity filter
i hate it. mason wants it. dead issue.
|
Re: Profanity filter
Mat,
What if you, I, David, and Ray banded together to fight Mason? One of us could steal his vitamins and hold them hostage, then we would have the upper hand. Regarding the issue itself, I don't really care. I just think it's weird given the type of disgusting stuff discussed all the time on 2+2, that's all. |

Re: Profanity filter
It is [censored] weird. The stuff that's allowed today never would have been allowed at first. Slowly we evolved into the gutter. I like it and Mason tolerates it. He doesn't endorse it, however. I'm pretty sure that he believes lifting the filter would imply such an endorsement.

Re: Profanity filter
Hi Masked Man:
I have used a personal profanity filter for well over 25 years. No one who currently knows me has ever heard me use a swear word of any sort (even though I get accused of it every now and then). So we're going to keep it. Also, just between us, I strongly recommend that you and your cronies keep your hands off my vitamins. Best wishes, Mason |
Re: Profanity filter
Mason, would you be more likely to let a curse word slip or openly detail the best jerking off session of your life?

To me, much of the discussion on 2+2 is far, far, far more offensive and inappropriate than lots of the words that are censored. [/ QUOTE ] I completely agree but any change should be limited to specific forums. The strategy forums and many other special interest forums don't allow this type of garbage. For them the profanity filter isn't at all inconsistent with the content of the forum. The filter helps maintain decorum without turning the mods into nitty four-letter-word police. |
Re: Profanity filter
Clearly, I read the wrong forums. I'm not going to go looking for the thread or anything, but apart from being someplace like your parents' house or a monastery, why would anyone want his lady not to make noise during sex?

Mason, would you be more likely to let a curse word slip or openly detail the best jerking off session of your life? [/ QUOTE ] compromise - the Solomon way would be to do both of course. While taking vitamins. PS: Dam you Evan, I lol'ed at your post! |
Re: Profanity filter
Speaking of the profanity filter.
I just warned a poster for using "f'n" in a post. Two posts down includes "wtf". Is it inconsistent to consider F'n to be circumventing the filter but wtf not circumventing the filter? (It just seems "wtf" has become common message board usage.) Profanity filter nittiness FTW! |
Re: Profanity filter
I would think f'n is ok. IT's more like "effin" than an actual profanity.

Re: Profanity filter
I've basically taken the position that you should just type whatever word it is you want to use and let the filter do it's job.
If you type bitch and it doesn't filter bitch, then you didn't break a rule. If you don't type the word completely, then you are by definition circumventing the filter. |
Re: Profanity filter
my rule is, if you can pronounce it and it sounds like the swear then you're violating the filter.
example 1: wtf 'double u tee f'...not violating example 2: f'in 'eff-ing'...not violating example 3: son of a beech or fegget...violation |
Re: Profanity filter
entertainme, wow, you warn people for saying f'n? That is ridiculous imo. I type "effing" all the time on here.
Gilf, son of a bitch. |
Re: Profanity filter
wtf bitch isn't banned? That is such cockshit.
|
Re: Profanity filter
dogshit isn't either btw.

If I type f'n, isn't that by definition circumventing the filter? What about fkg? Fukg? Where do you draw the line? This morning there was a post with buckfutting. It seems to me there's only one logical way to rework that into a word. For the record, I'm not offended by profanity, just trying to get an idea of how the rule is being enforced forum wide, (though I do think if we had no filter the site could quickly become unreadable.) |
Re: Profanity filter
I think "effing" is a socially acceptable non profanity in enough contexts that we should allow it. If you want to get techincal, the F is ok, it's when the u and the c get involved that we should be concerned.
|
Re: Profanity filter
OK. I've removed the warning and apologized to the poster.
I can see the logic of Gidwulf's enforcement method. Thanks for the help. |

[/ QUOTE ] I do not think "f'n" is circumventing the filter any more than saying "freaking" instead of "fu[/i]cking". I don't draw the line anywhere. I'm not the one in charge of programming the filter, so I'll leave that job to those that are. The only thing I'd consider unacceptable is using closing tags like I did above to display a whole filtered word. Frankly, I don't care if people use curses and I think it's pretty laughable that there's a filter at all. I know some of the admins want it though, so I have no problem with the rule that you can't directly circumvent it, which I consider to be finding ways to display strings of text that are not allowed. |

Testing: Stick it up your ass [censored]
Posted as: Stick it up your a$$ a$$hole Posted by Prickly Pete in the Brandi thread after I posted a warning that circumventing filter in that thread would result in ban. Dids, please take Brandi back? |
Re: Profanity filter
lol,
Brandi isn't so much the problem as it's the legion of 19 year olds frustrated that she'd rather pal around with DS than them. |
Re: Profanity filter
dickcockshit

Re: Profanity filter
Dids,
Would agree that Brandi is at least slightly batshit crazy? |
Re: Profanity filter

Yes I would. Here's to rooting for clouded judgement!! |
Re: Profanity filter
