Michelle Wie the biggest joke in sports?

After carding an 82 in the 1st round of the US Open, Michelle Wie played the 1st 9 holes in round 2 at 6 over par. Then she subsequently withdrew claiming to have tweaked her wrist. Is this for real? Why would someone enter tournament after tournament if they are this injured? This has turned into a sad joke if you ask me. If I was the president of the LPGA I would be embarrassed at the mockery she is making of the tour. So let's have a poll...

Re: Michelle Wie the biggest joke in sports?

After the eighth hole, things got worse and afterward Wie said the pain was "definitely enough to bring tears to my eyes. It was hard to do that for me, but it wasn't fun. It wasn't a great feeling."

but it brought tears to her eyes? do you have no sympathy?

Re: Michelle Wie the biggest joke in sports?

But it was obvious throughout that she is not ready to play among the elite. Her strength has not returned and she has struggled to drive the ball far and in play. Although she said Thursday that "there is a fine line between shooting 69 and 82," it appeared she was nowhere close to shooting the lower number.

nice i almost shot a 100 yesterday, at least it's reassuring that it could've been a 72.

dark,

I actually do have sympathy for Wie. I think most of the blame lies with her so called "camp". I mean what the hell are these people thinking? Why the hell are the letting her go out there and play? She is turning into the saddest story/biggest joke in sports and they seemingly are just standing there watching.

One of the highest goals of any professional athlete is to earn the ultimate respect of his peers. I remember an interview with Larry Bird a long time ago where the interviewer asked him what the biggest compliment he could ever receive was. His answer was something along the lines of, "Just the respect of my peers. Guys like Magic and Michael and Worthy and Charles saying that they feared me and respected me. That was the ulimate for me."

Look at how Michelle Wie's competitors are starting to view her. From this article about Wie written today by Ron Sirak, of Golf Digest: http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/colum...amp;id=2921912
-------
There is also the question of the hole she is digging for herself in both her relationship with LPGA players and with the public. One player, walking to the driving range, looked at the cluster of reporters swarming around Wie and said, "What did she do, quit again?"

Yeah she's got plenty of money no doubt. IMO she should say the hell with the LPGA tour and just go to Stanford and play golf for 4 years. She needs to learn how to win and learn to start liking golf again. She has way too much pressure on her right now and she just looks miserable out there, like the weight of the world is on her on every tee box.

Every body expected her to be the Tiger Woods of the womans game. The problem is that Tiger, mentally, is one of the toughest athletes in the world. He expects to win every single time he tees it up. It doesn't matter if he is tied or 5 shots down with 8 to play. Wie on the other hand has so little confidence in her game right now that she withdraws from a round with 2 holes to go b/c she is afraid she can't go bogey, bogey (or whatever) to avoid being kicked off the tour.

I mean damn go to college, make new friends, and party like a [censored] rock star with the 40 million dollars(or whatever) that you have. Then come back in a few years and worry about golf.

Does this mean go and play for fun for 4 years and not worry about playing pro? Or does it mean that you think she should go play for Stanford, because she has zero eligibility.

I'm actually starting to feel sorry for her. A little bit. Just because I hate to see someone crash and burn so hard when they had so much potential, primarily due to the bad decisions by herself and her handlers. She hasn't been taught to handle pressure on OR off the course, and has handled herself quite poorly both places as of late. Go see a sports psychologist, quit playing on the tour for a while and get your head straight. Injury or not, continuing to "play" the way she is and WD'ing from everything to save face from missing cuts isn't going to help her.

Wow that was a poorly worded sentence by me. I meant she should go to Stanford and forget about playing pro and play golf for fun when she wants to. She needs time off to get away from all the pressure that's on her. Every tournament she plays is just putting her in a deeper hole, as far as her confidence goes. I mean she is down right terrrible right now (by LPGA standards), and that is a fact. She was pushed too hard too early and I think if she doesn't take a substantial amount of time off to get her mind straight then her career is gonna be over before it really even started.

Does anyone know if her endorsement contracts stipulate that she plays a certain number of tournament per year? I really have no idea how they work.

Re: Michelle Wie the biggest joke in sports?

First, yes the injury is real. She was in a cast for four months and has seen a couple of specialist. If it was fake, then a simple phone call would uncover that. Annikka has played poorly after her neck problems but I don't see anyone here posting about how she is obviously faking an injury.

Second, she shouldn't even be playing. I know that David Ledbetter is against her playing, but apparently their are stipulations in her sponsorships that require her to play in certain tournaments or a certain number of tournaments. So she has pressure to give it a go, because the sponsors want her there to promote her and their products.

Thirdly, she's still 18 years old. Give it a rest already with the Wie bashing. I don't think their has ever been a greater number of internet sport nerds more gleeful in seeing a teenage girl fail then we have with Wie. Really, what does it matter to you what she does or how much she gets paid? Why do you care?

I'm really tired of this line of reasoning. She gets ripped on because she and her handlers and sponsors have put her in the spot light, paid her all sorts of money, and in some people's eyes she's failing to reach expectations. We rip on 18-19 year old college football and basketball players all the time, and none of them make anywhere close to the kind of money she does. You can't market yourself as a serious professional athlete and then fall back on the innocent little girl card when things go bad, because it's not true.

You do realize your last paragraph describes a LOT of pro sports figures and their followings, right? The fact that she's 18 years old or that she makes a TON of money just breathing for a day doesn't have nearly as much weight as the fact that she basically has a game little better than that of a lot of amateurs right now and has handled herself terribly both on the course and off it as of late. She chose this profession and all that comes with it. None of us hate her as a person, or hate her for the money she's making, its that she keeps getting shoved down our throats even though she completely sucks right now, for whatever reason. She's going to turn into David Duval sooner or later.

Well, I felt bad in such a way that I felt bad that she had to turn into such a headcase. I won't shed any tears over her though.

Something I didn't realize until I just read that Sirak article - Wie hasn't broken par in almost one full calendar year. Even before her injury (which I won't even get into the debate about in this one) she hadn't broken par for quite some time. Ridiculous. And she got beat by a 12-year-old this week, didn't she?

Flacks 07-01-2007 07:00 AM

Re: Michelle Wie the biggest joke in sports?

I know some of her "people" and can say, as has already been said, the injuries are real. She really should not be playing yet.

On a side note I have never been a supporter of her playing in mesn events and never will be.

She has typical "tennis parents" Her Dad especially.

I worry tremendously about any child who grows up with DL as a coach.

A friend of mine caddied in a group with her and said that her putting was terrible, especially considering her age. At that age you should feeel like you can make everything you see and she has admitted that she has the exact opposite feeling.

She should take time off, heal up, go to school and get her head on straight and become her own person. Any ditance between her and her family is a good thing.

1. I don't think anyone is saying she wasn't injured. The point is I think her injury has healed and now she is just using it as an excuse b/c she is playing awful.

2. Are you really comparing Michelle Wie to Annika Sorenstam? ROFLMAO!

Annika:

LPGA Tour Wins: 69
Major Championships: 10
LPGA Tour Player of the Year:
95, 97, 98, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05

Michelle Wie:
Well I tried hard to find even 1 event, LPGA tour and other, that she has won. Maybe she won a few age group trophies at the local club as a kid.

Now do you see why people are giving Annika the benefit of the doubt.

Thats fine if she is playing just for the money. I have no problem with that. Hell any of us would go out and hack 85 every round for 17 million a year. However, I would expect to be labeled exactly what I was if I was doing this. A over-hyped, crappy ass sideshow that draws a crowd, not a golfer. Which is exactly what Michelle Wie is right now.

My point was that if they're going to base it even partially on off-the-field hype, then it's really not the top 32 athletes in sports, it's the top 32 athletes in terms of marketability and name recognition list. Either way putting Michelle Wie and Daisuke on there over Tim Duncan or Melo is ridiculous.
