Lindgren\'s $340k Golf Prop Bet Today

We got a call from Gavin Smith last night saying that Erick Lindgren accepted a $100,000 prop bet with the following rules:

:: He had to play four rounds of golf at Bear's Best in one day.

:: He had to walk all four rounds back-to-back-to-back-to-back.

:: He'd be shooting from the pro tees.

:: He had to shoot under 100 on all rounds.

Within 15 minutes, Phil Ivey added another $200k to the bet, and with a few others jumping in since, the total is now close to $350k.

More on it at WCP

As of about an hour or so ago Lindgren had completed the first round successfully.

does he have to carry his clubs?

Yeh he's carrying his own clubs. Usually shoots high 80s...but Bear's Best is tough course.

Ivey just showed up.

Interesting - I have not played Bear's Best in Vegas.

Does anyone know how the course is layed out? i.e. Is it a reasonable course to walk, or are there large distances between holes and drastic elevation changes?

If this is the case, I'd imagine that he will fail. That last round is going to be gross.

Can you explain this to somebody who's been at all involved in golf? I take it'll be tough since he'll just be exhausted by the end.. or what?

I'd say he almost has a 0% chance of doing this.

Re: Lindgren\'s $340k Golf Prop Bet Today

One of the hard parts for Erick in this bet will be all the walking BETWEEN holes. Many holes are spread out, with long distances from green to the next tee. It will be very difficult for him to do this.

I would estimate each round will require 7 miles of walking.

Re: Lindgren\'s $340k Golf Prop Bet Today

Yeah. And after hitting that many balls his arms will be dead. Never mind that he will have been walking around in the 110 degree Nevada sunshine for 12+ hours. I once played 2 back to back rounds at PGA West when it was 105, with a cart, and was exhausted near the end.

If he completed the first round at 125 vegas time, how is he going to play 3 more rounds by the time it is dark out? Or does it not get dark out until like midnight there?

Pretty much. If his average score is 88 on a normal day, just playing one round, its not uncommon to shoot 5 strokes above or below that. So a 93 is very possible even w/o playing 4 rounds. Add in fatigue due to 110+ weather, and the fact that he has to carry his clubs and his back will be a knot on that last 18. I would guess that this will add about 10 strokes.

Plus, most "nice" courses in the West take 4+ hours to play in a cart b/c they are very spread out. So we're talking 16 hours of golf w/o talking in consideration bathroom, eating, water, slow play from other golfers, etc....

No doubt - I figured he would need a single digit handicap to take this bet, and even then - there are huge time constraints here, let alone fatigue.

lolz I'd pay some weekend hackers to slow it up not that I think there is much of a chance if the course is wide open. Did they close off the course the rest of the day for this? Is this a hilly walk? I can't see a poker player being in enough shape for this

if he's mid round 3...there's no shot it'll be dark before he finishes...in fact, he may get a half hour/45 min breather between 3 and 4. it's hot today though...

if he's mid third round right now (2:15pm), and he's on track to break 100 this round...he's def the fav in the bet.

Ok got the Bear's Best booklet. The course is very spread out. The longest tees are the Golds. The stats for the Gold tees are:

Yardage: 7,194 yards
Rating: 74.0
Slope: 147

Re: Lindgren\'s $340k Golf Prop Bet Today

If I recall, Bears Best is about 7200 from the tips... but plays shorter because of the way the course is designed. Something like 145 slope. Last time I played it I shot 69 and hit it ok. (Im a plus 2) So if Erick is an 18 he should have a shot, but from the sounds of it Erick plays a few shots lower than that making him a favorite. As long as he stays hydrated and doesn't eat dark meats today he should win.

it's gotta be a 24 hour period, right? That would give him cooler morning temps and a decent rest for a final round.

edit: just read the article. supposedly he started early this morning. don't know why he would just be starting 2nd round. Obviously update came way late.

I assumed no rest from the OP, doesn't say '24 hours' says 4 consecutive rounds. If he gets to rest for 10 hours then it's doable.

i thought he breaks 80 pretty regularly? i don't think this is as hard as some people are saying. i would bet on lindgren assuming he is as good of a golfer as i was under the impression he is.

does he have to shoot under 100 for four consecutive rounds? say he shoots over 100 on the fourth round and there's still daylight: can he play another round and try to go under 100 again?

i remember in the andy beal book there was some player (maybe huck seed or ted forrest?) who won a bet like this, and they were able to play an extra round because they had one round where they didn't shoot under their target.

at a local golf course they offer however many rounds you want to play on weekdays before 4 and I used to play 2 and like 3 holes on the third and be absolutely dead. Oh yeah we had carts and the temp was 90 max

BLdSWtTRs 06-27-2007 05:21 PM

Re: Lindgren\'s $340k Golf Prop Bet Today

How are they defining a day? Will they let him play at 4am and will there be enough visibility?

I would think that four rounds with breaks would take atleast 15 hours.
He's going to walk 25 miles in a 24 hour period.

I think the odds are against him.
