OT: DevinLake strikes at the Venetian deep stack series
 

Today Devin decided to play the 540 NL deep stack event at the venetian (bc he took it off me at nl200 the night before obv).

In STTF uber pwnage fashion, Devin cashed in a 32 way chop (560ish runners, top 40 cashed) where the top 5 stacks got 11k and the rest of the field chopped evenly for just under 8k a piece. The stacks were very short at the end so the deal was a great one for basically 8th place money, but I'll let Devin do justice to the thread from here on out. Congrats Dev!

AMT and I sweated this for probably 3 hours and Devin didn't play a hand. It was still exciting though because we spent most of the time discussing the EV of the chop and various horrible players.

Way to go and a ship it holla. A stress free score like this couldn't have happened to a more deserving and awesome guy.

oh, and, for the future. 31 people woulda hated me. if you ever get 90%+ of a group of 10 or more players wanting a chop, never, ever do it unless they give you the world. I can tell you with utter certainty they all suck, have never or rarely ever been deep and are uncertain of what to do.

this is costanza_g, i was playing at a cash table in the same room as devins for about the last 5 hours of the tourney. It seemed like one or two old dudes were the only ones being really vocal about wanting a chop once they hit the money. I guess it sort of grew into a mob mentality, and the few people who didnt want to chop were basically pressured into it from my point of view.

The floor manager really had his hands full trying to keep everyone in there seat and maintain order. lol, it was like two dugouts clearing in a baseball game [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]. Its still an awesome deal for devin since he was getting short and taking 8th place with 32 left is crucial.

If I was devin I would have tried to get myself an awesome deal. Like I'lll chop only if everyone gives me $200 out of what they get paid.

i think it was a good deal for everyone involved....the chip leader had like 397k at 6k/12k/2k ante and Devin had like 160k


edit: I think somewhere around 500k, perhaps slightly less, and I would definitely reject a chop.

I suck at live poker, I was happy with the the chop.

The big stack probably had an M of about 6-8. It was a crap shoot. The chop gave everyone like 8 or 9th place money. Also, I get to play the $1.5k event today and wouldn't have if it didn't get chopped.

I'll post some more details later, but have to go play hopefully for another 14 hrs today.

It actually seemed like the chop was kind of up in the air to start and there were several very vocal opponents to it. The guys wanting the chop wanted to do it evenly at first and the big stack balked at that so they offered 11k to the top 5, and upon hearing that this one old dude said he wouldn't chop unless he was in the top 5. Right then the director ordered chip counts from everyone, and upon seeing how short everyone was, opposition to the chop disappeared.

I really disagree that it's "awful" to turn this down. Given Devin's utility argument (that it allows him to play the highly +$EV $1.5k WSOP event and have some cash for other awesome games), taking the chop makes sense. It probably costs him a few hundred dollars in actual tournament prize pool equity.

I do know from experience when you're the only one to turn down a many-way chop, people hate you and collude against you, which is almost always -$EV for you.

ya, this is a great spot to be an [censored] and be like 'im better than you give me more money' because they will all be like, whats 200$ out of my 8k, ive seen this happen a bunch of times watching MTTs at night, granted the fields weren't this big at the point of the dealmaking, but still.

anyways, nice score devin, 8k is a sexy hit at the beginning of the Vegas extravaganza
