Meeting Girlfriends Parents/Playing Poker Summer Job

I"m going to meet girlfriends parents for the first time this weekend and the first thing that always comes up is "What are you doing for a Job this summer"? I don't have a job and am just playing poker...which i'll make more money than any summer job would provide. Of coarse anyone that doesn't play poker looks at this as simply gambling and is not a legitamate job. I don't want to say i just play poker and come off as a freeloader or lazy. What should i say?

Doing independent research maybe. Just make a claim something related to school.

I feel your dilemma here...you never want to look - even if it's not a fair impression - like a total degenerate to the the gf's parents.

However, if I've learned one thing over the years, one lie leads to another..leads to another..leads to another. Be straight up...if it's asked, just say,

"I'm in the process of sifting through a variety of different options for employment, in the meantime, thankfully, I am a succesful poker player and have won enough over the last several months to be able to MORE than afford to be selective in the job hunt"

Something along those lines...YES, it approaches that gray area of fib/fabrication/embellishment...but, I think it at least presents ssomething that subconsciously is true.

Try it...I bet it goes over. If it doesn't...eff it, they are, at some point, going to have to love you for who you are, not hate you for what you're not.

Peace (let us know how it goes!)

Hmmm... no, just lie. "I'm interning in an office this summer, I basically fetch coffee. It's pretty boring. How's your summer going?"

problem solved

Just say you work for a company online. Not exactly a lie but not the truth either.

Say that you work in online international arbitrage and that you make a lot of money doing it but it is boring and not interesting to discuss.

just say you do not need to work this summer, as you have independent means.

*edit* scratch this idea; it's going to make you look like a drug dealer. just tell them the truth.

Re: Meeting Girlfriends Parents/Playing Poker Summer Job

I don't get it... unless you're going to say "I play online poker" (which you obviously don't want to say) you're going to be lying to some degree, so use the lie that is least likely to bite you in the ass: "I work in an office, I basically fetch coffee for a lawyer, it's easy but boring. What do you do?" etc. They'll be satisfied yet the job is so disinteresting that they won't badger you for more details.

This is really full-proof.

Unless her parents work for the gestapo or something it's unlikely that this series of questions will come up, but just in case:

Sampson and Goldstein, 189 Broad St. (your town, your state) boss is Jonathan Goldstein, small ambulance chaser lawyers basically, I type up some documents and keep the coffee hot.

Do you suck at lying so bad that you couldn't come up with that [censored] off hand? Jesus christ.

I dunno man... my girlfriend's parents never grilled me about what I did/do, although I will admit I've been looking at this from the perspective of a 24-year-old... if OP is like 16 or something her parents might look at it differently. But honestly I've temped in bush-league little legal offices before, I don't see how making one up is so obviously transparent. A lot of it depends on how good of a liar you are though.

PoppinFresh 06-21-2007 04:40 PM

Re: Meeting Girlfriends Parents/Playing Poker Summer Job

Just say you play poker, lying is completely unnecessary. If this relationship is actually going somewhere you really think down the line after the parents get to know you they are going to care more that you played poker for a summer than that you lied to them about what you did for a summer?

In all honesty guy, if you want the parents to like you AND respect you, tell them the truth.

I have no idea how old the OP is, but he did say he was meeting them for the first time. Getting a good old-fashioned grilling from the old man needs to be expected (which is the reason for his post).

Let's just say I'd like to be a fly on the wall if the old man is like me, and he thinks he's being lied to...

Re: Meeting Girlfriends Parents/Playing Poker Summer Job

Just tell them you haven't found a summer job yet. This results in no more questions being asked about what you do. Sure this sorta makes you look like a slacker, but it will go over way better then telling them you're playing cards, or trying to make up a fake job.

Re: Meeting Girlfriends Parents/Playing Poker Summer Job

Anyone who says it's a good idea to tell the truth about the poker is very naive or too open-minded. Most adults will automatically dismiss you if you tell them you play poker for a living. I guess how much you reveal depends on how close a relationship you plan to maintain with the parents.

Uhhhmmm, as stated by someone before, how does the girlfriend think about you lying to her parents? I guess she will be there when these conversations take place, or at least find out what you answered.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I'm certainly in the minority because I'm a poker playing parent. However, he still wouldn't get off easy with me. I can assure you the next question out my mouth would be, "May I see your PT stats, please?"

Re: Meeting Girlfriends Parents/Playing Poker Summer Job

These situations suck enough with random parents, and I can imagine would be worse with a girlfriend's parents.

What typically happens for me [19yo, just finished first year of college] is a parent or whoever else will go, "So what are you doing this summer?" Obviously asking where you are working. I just respond "Taking it easy really, just trying to play a lot of golf." If you dont come off as a bum [dress and speak well, etc.], then a lot of times the questions end there. Sometimes they follow up with, "Well are you working anywhere?" And at that point you really need to judge how they will respond to what you say. If you dont think it will be a big deal, then just tell them what you do. What I usually say if I think people will react negatively is, "Well I worked a lot during the school year the past few years and have enough saved up that I dont need to really work much this summer other than some odd jobs here and there."

This is usually just for parents of friends/acquaintances, but for a girlfriend's parent [who Id imagine you plan on seeing again], I would lean towards telling the truth. Maybe they will think you are a degen at first, but if you treat their daughter well, their opinion will change.
