What are the truest lyrics you ever read?
Sorry if this is a little unsuited for this forum, but I really wanted to hear some sensible replies.
My suggestion is from 'Nature Boy': "The greatest thing you'll ever learn Is just to love and be loved in return." |

Secret O' Life by James Taylor
The secret of life is enjoying the passing of time There aint nuthin to it Any fool can do it |
Re: What are the truest lyrics you ever read?
You smoked me like a cigarette
I was burned, I was cast aside You knew what you couldn't get So you settled for my pride ------------------------------- And you run and you run To catch up with the sun But it's sinking Racing around To come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way But you're older Shorter of breath And one day closer to death |

Bob Dylan, Tangled Up in Blue:
We always did feel the same, we just saw it from a different point of view. Favorite by far. I don't know what it is, happiness, contentedness, I don't know, but at our core we all want the same thing. How we get there is how we are different. |

Re: What are the truest lyrics you ever read?
Seger sometimes seems so minor, but at his best, he's one hell of a lyricist.

Some Thought From Me
A Song About Love (amongst other things) - David Bowie - Heroes And you You can be mean And I I'll drink all the time 'Cause we're lovers And that is a fact Yes we're lovers And that is that A Song About Addiction - Tom Waits - Heartattack and Vine boney's high on china white, shorty found a punk, don't you know there ain't no devil, there's just god when he's drunk, well this stuff will probably kill you, let's do another line, what you say you meet me down on heartattack and vine. see that little jersey girl in the see-through top, with the peddle pushers sucking on a soda pop, well i bet she's still a virgin but it's only twenty- five 'til nine, you can see a million of 'em on heartattack and vine. A Sonf About Heartbreak - Radiohead - Thinking About You Been thinking about you, and there's no rest, should I still love you, still see you in bed. But I'm playing with myself, what do you care, when I'm not there. All the things you've got, she'll never need, all the things you've got. I've bled and I bleed to please you. Been thinking about you. A Song About War (or at least its what I feel the track is about) - Pink Floyd - Vera Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn Remember how she said that We would meet again Some sunny day Vera! Vera! What has become of you Does anybody else in here Feel the way I do ? A Protest Song - Whats going on - Marvin Gaye Father, father We don't need to escalate You see, war is not the answer For only love can conquer hate You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today A song about love... or is it? - Lou Reed - Perfect Day Just a perfect day you made me forget myself I thought I was someone else, someone good I have no idea what this means - Kaizers Orchestra - Kontrol Pa Kontinent Den skal vær mann som kan gå med min hatt Den skal vær kald som tar øve mi makt Den skal ha nr 42 for å gå med mine sko |

Well, I've never prayed,
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind , I feel free now But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now |

Re: What are the truest lyrics you ever read?
There is something about this song that rings true for those who have kids.
Peering out of tiny eyes The grubby hands that gripped the rail Wiped the window clean of frost As the morning air laid on the latch A whistle awakened someone there Next door to the nursery just down the hall A strange new sound you never heard before A strange new sound that makes boys explore Tread neat so small those little feet Amid the morning his small heart beats So much excitement yesterday That must be rewarded must be displayed Large hands lift him through the air Excited eyes contain him there The eyes of those he loves and knows But what's this extra bed just here His puzzled head tipped to one side Amazement swims in those bright green eyes Glancing down upon this thing That make strange sounds, strange sounds that sing In those silent happy seconds That surround the sound of this event A parent smile is made in moments They have made for you a friend And all you ever learned from them Until you grew much older Did not compare with when they said This is your brand new brother This is your brand new brother This is your brand new brother Elton John/Bernie Taupin The Greatest Discovery |

There I am in younger days, star gazing
Painting picture perfect maps Of how my life and love would be Not counting the unmarked paths of misdirection My compass, faith in love’s perfection I missed ten million miles of road I should have seen Meanwhile our friends we thought were so together Left each other one by one on the road to fairer weather And we sit here in our storm and drink a toast To the slim chance of love’s recovery "Love's Recovery," Indigo Girls |

I really think that Dylan is in his own league. I think an entire thread could be devoted to his lyrics alone.

Why's it so soft when the cannons unload on the others? Why're we so loud when we say it wont happen to us? Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song? It's just the way that he sings, not the words that he says, or the band. Im in love with this soul, it's a meaning that I understand. [/ QUOTE ] My Morning Jacket - The Way That He Sings Because the last two lines pretty much sum up how I feel about a lot of my favorite music, theirs included. |
Re: What are the truest lyrics you ever read?
Really, there are so many it's hard to pick.
After an all night party at my house I spent an entire summer school class writing this one on the blackboard once. The Beatles: Within You and Without You We were talking About the space between us all And the people Who hide themselves behind a wall Of illusion Never glimpse the truth Then it's far too late When they pass away We were talking About the love we all could share When we find it To try our best to hold it there With our love, with our love We could save the world, if they only knew Try to realize it's all within yourself No one else can make you change And to see you're really only very small And life flows on within you and without you We were talking About the love that's gone so cold And the people Who gain the world and lose their soul They don't know They can't see Are you one of them When you've seen beyond yourself Then you may find, peace of mind is waiting there And the time will come when you see we're all one And life flows on within you and without you Jennifer Knapp: Kansas: Martyrs and Thieves Well I've never been much for the baring of soul In the presence of any man I'd rather keep to myself all safe and secure In the arms of a sinner I am Could it be that my worth should depend By the crimson stained grace on a hand And like a lamp on a hill Lord I pray in Your will To reveal all of You that I can U2: The Joshua Tree: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For I have run - I have crawled I have scaled these city walls These city walls Only to be with you But I still haven't found what I'm looking for But I still haven't found what I'm looking for |
Re: What are the truest lyrics you ever read?
I think this is perfect forum material. I'll list a few artists then some lyrics.
Jewel, Fiona Apple, 2pac, Clipse, Goo Goo Dolls, Oasis, Tom Petty, Fabolous, REM, Sarah McLaughlin, Eminem, Outkast, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Shakira, Ben Folds, Ben Harper, Maroon 5 Here are 2. But, there are so many: I just found out there's no such thing as the real world just a lie you've gotta rise above - John Mayer I keep my heads, yeah, both of them where they're supposed to be cause hoes can get you sidetracked and clapped from close feet -Jay Z |
Re: What are the truest lyrics you ever read?

I really think that Dylan is in his own league. I think an entire thread could be devoted to his lyrics alone. [/ QUOTE ] True. A lot of the great lyrics aren't really great as "sayings" or observations in themselves, but because of the story or emotional picture they paint. Good examples: Julia by John Lennon, Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. This kind of makes it hard to judge lyrics against each other sometimes. If we want to go by absolute truth, I have to give the nod to Missing Persons, with "Only a nobody walks in L.A." |
