Check-Raising into the Nuts

Was wondering how I did on this hand, I had been having a pretty crappy session overall and this hand pretty much crippled me and I walked away from my table and cashed out after it for my $11.

$3/$6 at my local B&M

I had KTO preflop in the small blind with 4-5 limpers. I called and the flop came K5X. Can't remember who bet but everyone called for $3. Turn comes K, giving me trips. Everyone checks around. Now I think I've got the nuts with my trips, so I checked the blank on the river. UTG bets $6 and UTG+2 calls. I raise to $12 and UTG calls. Other guy folds. I turn over my trips and he flips over 55 for the full house. What was a better way to play this hand?

I did the same earlier with KQo, button had limped AK.
I told him "nh" and in my head thanked him for letting me off so cheaply.

What was a better way to play which one, the fives or the KT? With the King-10, bet the turn and river and call down if someone raises. The flop is either a checkraise or just bet out, depending on what card "X" is, what are the suits, and who do you expect to bet (if anyone).

With the 55, don't slowplay like the other guy did.

You lost only $18 total in this hand; maybe 3/6 is too high for your bankroll if 18 bucks is crippling. Best wishes.

A better way was to lose more money.

Checking the flop is bad. Checking the turn is worse. Checking the river after the turn was checked around is just criminal.

This time you were against a better hand who played even worse than you. But the vast majority of the time, the river will get checked around and you'll pull in a tiny pot and wish you'd helped get some chips in the middle on the big streets.

anyways you guys both played this hand beyond terrible.

you need to bet the flop, turn and river. if you get raised you call it down.

bet the flop, bet the turn, raise the river, call a threebet.

55 isn't the nuts on this board btw.

Now I think I've got the nuts, so I checked the river.

Why would you go and do that?

I really don't understand your line at all. It's very important to know who bet the flop here. It's likely you have a best hand and you need to decide to either bet out or check-raise -- and you should do both with some frequency. If it's checked to the button and he bets, you definitely want to c/r for isolation.

The turn significantly improves your hand. Bet. You didn't, so you better make sure you bet the river.

And then you check the river because you think you have the best hand. This makes absolutely no sense to me. What makes you think you'll get an opportunity to check-raise considering nobody bet the turn?

Remember: the nuts (or the xth nuts, in the case) is not the only hand you want to bet with. You're looking to extract value with what is statistically likely to be the best hand. And conversely, when you have what you think is the best hand, a c/r is in order only under certain circumstances (i.e. you've strong reason to believe someone else will bet.)

And btw, you really lost the minimum. You lost $18, I think I lose $30 up against the same donk. And if I were up a decent opponent holding 5s full, probably more like $36 or $42.

Sorry, should have been more specific. Wanted to know better way to play KT. I remembered today that the X card on the flop was an A. Pretty sure the flop was a rainbow.

Casino was Soaring Eagle. I usually do better, but I’ve been playing real bad lately and donking on really bad plays and even worse reads. I agree that he played the hand horribly as well.

I know 55 isn’t the nuts. But he definitely didn’t have the nuts, because he thought I had the nuts. Nuts would have been AK for Aces full. But I definitely didn’t think he had pocket 5s.

I checked the river because I had a good feeling he would bet so I could check-raise him. I’m seeing now that this was the wrong play, but that was my reasoning at the time.

Re: Check-Raising into the Nuts

K5x is a lot different from AKx. A lot. And someone also pointed out that you needed to know who bet on the flop.

I know that it's hard to recall all the details of every hand, but there are only a few key hands that occur during a session, and you should remember the details of those hands so you can evaluate your play afterwards. It looks like you aren't really watching all the details of the big hands you're in and this is probably hurting your results.

At any rate, the standard advice still holds here - you should have been betting out with such a strong hand on the turn and/or river.

Nit: Aces full is indeed the nuts on this hand, but that's AA not AK (AK would be kings full).

Re: Check-Raising into the Nuts

Sounds like UTG was going for a c/r on the turn. btw, the nuts is when you absolutely cannot lose the hand (ie: nut flush on an unpaired board.)
