Pick my 14th club

Current Setup:
VAS Driver
Launcher 5 Wood
Halo Hybrid 19 d
3 Iron
4 Iron
5 Iron
6 Iron
7 Iron
8 Iron
9 Iron
Pitching Wedge
Gap Wedge
Putter

My game is pretty solid - I'm a down the middle 240 hitter that struggles with long irons and fairway woods. My 6-9 and PW are getting stronger and my short game is my strength. I'm coming up on 20 rounds, and scoring lower and lower, so it look like my handicap is going to be an 8. Basically, I hit 12 of 14 fairways during a round, chunk 6 or 7 second shots and bogey a long par 3 every round.

Any thoughts on my 14th club?

The laws of physics dictate that I cannot hit a 3 iron no matter what I do, and I'm thinking of taking it out of the bag and replacing it with a hybrid, so I might be back for another recommendation on a 14th club.

Is your Gap a 52? I couldn't see playing without my sandwedge, a 56.

I've had the same wedge since my teens and I was too poor to buy any other clubs. I've learned to use it in all situations and I'm comfortable with it. I could add a sand or a lob wedge, but I don't lose many, if any, shots from 75 in, so I don't know if it's a big priority.

your hybrid and your 5 wood are nearly the same loft? ever think of a 3 wood?

also if you learn to use a lob wedge it can really help if you are an 8 handicap.

[/ QUOTE ]As ghostie says, plus your 3 iron too, basically you have 3 clubs that are almost the same unless your 5 wood is strong. You really should have a 3 wood.

Sorry about that. That should be a launcher 3 wood, NOT a 5 wood. Sorry.

How close do you hit your 3i and your Hybrid?

I'd look into a 3 wood or 60* wedge...

lose the 3 iron and pick up a couple of wedges. you'd be surprised how useful all the wedges can be around the green in different situations. especially for as low of a handicap as you have.

How happy are you about your bunker play? If your happy using the gap wedge for everything around the green consider carrying a high bounce wedge just for the bunkers.
Contrary to others I actually think a 5 wood should bridge the gap between a 19 hybrid and a 3 wood nicely.

I think I'm ditching the 3 Iron and going with a a high bounce wedge and a 5 Wood.

Thanks for the suggestions all.

(5 wood, 19d hybrid, 3 iron.)

One of these should go. Depending on how old your irons are, the three iron is between 20*-22*. (Manufactures keep jacking the lofts so buys hit their "7" iron farther, even though its less loft. The Launcher 5 wood is 18*. Its a little longer so probably provides a slightly wider distance gap than the 1* would indicate. Still, thats just two close a cluser at that distance lenght of 18*,19* and max 22*.

I'd echo others with adding a wedge. It will give you options, especially for tight situations. If you have the cash, I'd look at redo-ing the above situation. The problem is that you are probably going to have to drop eiter the 5 wood or hybrid unless there is a huge shaft lenght difference between the two. Then get a hybrid at about 23*-25*
