5cd open

Basicly, what opening recs do you have at a 6-handed 5 card draw table?

Re: 5cd open

(Assuming unopened pot)
UTG: AA and up
Next seat: KK and up
and so on...

Same range to non-tricky players who limp, but add a SB for each limper; concider betting the pot for your lesser hands.

In a raised pot the gap principle applies: you need a better hand to call then to open. I fold all pairs, most 2 pairs, bottom trips. Top trips get reraised.

For the blinds, SB can raise any pair against just the BB, but tighten up if he suspects this.

For pat hands… well, hard to misplay the nuts, right?

You fold bottom trips to a raise? IMO it is ok to fold 222 for example to a raise+re-raise+call but certainly not against a single raise.

Yep, unless I have position I’ll not calling a raise with low trips. If I do call I’m not looking to push it far.

OOP the decisions get too hard (unless he discards 3) and it’s not a common occurrence anyway.

This is way too tight in pot limit, I would imagine it's even worse in limit.

Re: 5cd open

"Conservatively", for legitimate hands in fixed limit draw,
the minimum OPEN RAISING hands are:

utg) KKA+
hijack) QQK+
cutoff) JJQ+
button) 99T+
sb) 667+

It turns out you can open lighter in most situations (but
not by much) but I won't go into details. I like the above
schedule because it is easy to remember for anybody new to
the game and these hands aren't really quite the minimum, so
anyone using the schedule won't get into too much trouble!

You can also use these for PL draw if you open for the
minimum, but you would have to tighten up a bit if you open
close to the maximum.

If somebody else has opened, you have to consider the "gap
principle". I'll let others elaborate.

That is 5 handed in case you didn't catch it.

Re: 5cd open

Ok, this might be a naive question, but why do the kickers matter ? If I entered the pot with the hands that BigPooch lists then I would be drawing three. Is this an incorrect play ? Or, is the kicker only important because it reduces the chances of a later player having a higher pair ?

bigpooch 07-02-2007 03:29 AM

Re: 5cd open

You almost always draw three except for a few well known
cases (e.g., you are likely up against AA and you have AA
with a high kicker).

The main reason is that it reduces the chances of an
opponent holding a higher pair. Also, on the button, you
prefer to have better than 99T since many players won't lay
down a pair of jacks from the small blind, so you probably
want 99J or better. In the small blind, the kicker really
doesn't matter much at all; i.e., any pair of sixes will do.

Thanks....what I thought...but wanted to be sure.

Re: 5cd open

Re kickers: that's why in the Wiesenberg articles, that he says on the button when stealing with a smaller pair, that it's better to either have two kickers higher than your pair, or an Ace. So if you have TTKQx, then you're helping eliminate KK and QQ as possible pairs that the blind will defend with.. and of course, the Ace to lessen AA (as a more savvy player may reraise you with AA; which then sucks cause most the time u end up having to call--at least in limit--due to pot size).

Re: 5cd open

I think in many 10,000 hands of 5CD (mostly PL) I've lost maybe 3 hands to same pair/lesser kicker. Kickers are just not as importaint as having the higher pair.

(Or... what Dom said)
