Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
Hi OOT,
I occasionally like listening to brooding, Hearts of Space/trance kinda music. The first song I can think of that sounds like what I'm trying to describe is Treefingers from Kid A. I am pretty much clueless as to where to find this kind of music, other than streaming the HOS website, which is of little use since I basically only listen to music in my car. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction? Artists, soundtracks, compilations, etc? |

not really my specialty but I think The Field is what you're looking for. I like it.
also The Eraser by Thom Yorke is very electronic, I like it a lot, but it's not techno. |

I should specify however that I'm looking for instrumental music without vocals. Also generally speaking I'm not into fast-paced stuff that you might dance to. More like the kind of music they play in movies when a guy's driving down a dark highway all alone. Edit: If there's an album with 9 uptempo songs and 1 slow one I'd still love to hear about it. I can pick and choose after I listen to it. |

Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
how about Brian Eno? Might be a little too spacey, but Music For Airports or Ambient 4 - On Land should tell you if you like him or not.
Boards of Canada might be a good pick for this too. |

Almost spent my entire youth there. Had I not found poker I would've been a DJ. Edit: I should add that if you register and visit the music discussion forum . I started with the trance discussions but fell in love with goa/psy. |
Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
The more I think about it the more I'm liking the idea of delving into more trance/electronica in general. Turn it into an electronica/trance/techno thread (if those are the right terms). Hit me with any of it. Also agree with Daryn that Disco Science song is killer. Thanks for the suggestions so far. Pete I will check out that forum.

Get these:
God Speed You Black Emperor! A Silver Mt. Zion (GSYBE lead's side project, slightly different--more vocals) Do Make Say Think Explosions is a good rec too. The above I can't get enough of. |

Robert Miles is the [censored], but I'm not quite sure if it "fits" what you're looking for.

Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
Are you looking for things like the soundtrack to Blade Runner?
Actually, after hearing the songs you mentioned... this is exactly what you're looking for. Look for anything done by Vangelis. The soundtracks to Blade Runner and Cosmos are great. |

This is pretty much exactly the kind of music I'm looking for, though I'm now getting interested in sampling the wider genre as well. |

Trance is actually very uptempo dance music. To quote wikipedia: "trance music is generally characterized by a tempo of between 130 and 160 bpm, featuring repeating melodic synthesizer phrases, and a musical form that builds up and down throughout a track, often crescendoing or featuring a breakdown" What you are describing is Ambient music. I can't really help with this other than to link to the only Ambient album I have: Selected Ambient Works by Aphex Twin. |

Thanks for the tip and the recommendation. |

The genre is very wide, here are some suggestions: Fluke Portishead Massive Attack Moby Also, older school: Vangelis Philip Glass Tangerine Dream ALSO: If you find an internet radio station you like, get the program STREAM RIPPER, and you can save that streaming music and burn CDs for your car. Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
I am not totally sure what you mean by space trance. However there are many "space" motifs in GOA/Psychedelic trance. The same music they play at Fullmoon parties around the world (e.g. Thailand,Australia). A good place to sample and buy cd's is http://www.psyshop.com/
Favourite Arists include: Infected Mushroom Skazi Astral projection Astrix GMS Wizzy Noise Flowjob U-Reckon For darker sound try psytrance sub genre: Dark Psytrance Hujaboy Hydraglyph And about half of all those compilations on above link are dark as well. Hope that helps |

Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
yeah, i got the idea he was looking for ambient music
angelo badalamenti (sp?) who does david lynch soundtracks has done a lot of good ambient stuff. aphex twin's selected ambient works II is much weirder than I, but I like it a lot more. I forget if I mentioned Boards of Canada. |
Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
check out
Alex Hephaestion Bluetech Buddha Bar Rainstick Orchestra Bonobo Ulrich Schnauss and Boards of Canada are also quite good as previously metnioned |

Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
Slight HJ: anyone listen to Sirius 33? It's called trance, and I'd say I like about 80% of what they play. I would like to know if this music is considered mainstream trance, hardcore trance, bad trance, British trance, etc, or what.

Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
Treefingers is ambient music.
This particular song is lacking a stiff drumbeat/rhythm section. Some stuff that matches this: David Kristian - The Mariana Trench (2005) (this is basically an entire album of music in the realm of Treefingers) Aphex Twin - selected Ambient works (he has several, but vol. 2 is brilliant) some stuff with rhythm, but still downtempo and atmospheric Isan, Slowdive, Basic Channel, really... there are many more. ...and I concur with Brian Eno and Boards of Canada. |
Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
Yeah what I was initially looking for is definitely ambient music, but I'd like to try a lot of stuff and will be checking into all the recommendations in this thread.

Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
Here's another vote for Boards of Canada, I think it'll fit the bill very well. Ulrich Schnauss and Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works are other recommendations I can second from this thread.

Re: Looking for space/trance music (I don\'t even know what to call it)
"area 33" on sirius - how funny I'm listening right now.
This is is close to psytrance, but a little slower. As far as OP - I got the impression he was looking for ambient or chill, not trance. However, if you want the absolute nuts in terms in internet radio for PsyTrance, check out: http://philosomatika.com 100% goa/psytrance. |
