Turks and Caicos WPT Event

Turks and Caicos O RLY?

Just came upon this scheduled WPT event. Does anyone know anything more about the tournament or the locale?

Interesting, more of a push from the WPT to grab overseas market share.

if they are having a wpt event there, and you plan on going, you will need two bankrolls. i just vacationed there 2 months ago, and it is one of the most expensive places i've been, and i've been all over. average bar and grill type place.....burger,fries, 3 beers...$35 b4 tip. paid 5 bucks for a can of diet coke poolside. six pack of beer at a liquor store 20 bucks. you get the picture.

Looking at the schedule:

1. The WPT event at Turks and Caicos competes HEAD-TO-HEAD against the UltimateBet.net/AbsolutePoker.net event in Aruba.

2. The WPT event in Barcelona, Spain competes HEAD-TO-HEAD against the Moscow Millions, which will take place at the FullTiltPoker.net poker room at Casino Cosmos in Moscow, Russia.

Coincidence?

Looks like the little "war" between Mr. Lipscomb and the brother-sister combination of Howard Lederer and Annie Duke has apread to both the Caribbean and Europe.

For us "neutrals", we will certainly watch with interest to see how this feud unfolds.

Wanna bet some money that the Lipscomb vs Lederer/Duke feud will eventually spread to mainland China as well?

I would not bet against that happening if I were you.

Oliver, what is the nature and history of this so-called feud you speak of?

Also, is it necessarily something other than a coincidence? I mean, they have to schedule the events sometime, somewhere, right?

I'm assuming Oliver's referring to the WPT anti-trust lawsuit that Duke, Lederer, Raymer, etc. filed.

Yeah, that didn't even occur to me.

I can't find any info on Player's Club, Club Med, or any reference on Club Med's site to a casino or gambling operation on Turks...

I couldnt find any other hotel-structure-tournament info anywhere else though, but as per the WPT website:

The resort is Club Med Turkoise:

Remember that WPT at Turks and Caicos is going head-to-head against the UltimateBet.net/AbsolutePoker.net event at Aruba.

You will have to choose one or the other, as you can't be at both places at the same time.

Let's see who ends up winning this little battle: WPT or UB/AP (read: Annie Duke, Phil Hellmuth, and co.)

--

One thing you will need to be aware of: WPT is going to both Biloxi and Turks and Caicos (not to mention Atlantic City as well) during hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean. Turks and Caicos is located north of Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), which historically has been in the path of many Atlantic Ocean hurricanes.

Aruba, which is 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela, is usually NOT in the path of Atlantic Ocean hurricanes.

lolovert,

I love it when you advise us on which tournaments to play based on potential weather hazards.

I did peruse that website and didn't see any mention of a casino.

Also, I'd choose Turks and Caicos over Aruba, since I've been to Aruba once before and Turks is supposed to be nice, and I like going to new places, and the prizepool will be bigger. But if it conflicts with the Taj USPC I wouldn't go to either.

Re: Turks and Caicos WPT Event

I long for the day when these tournaments expand to South America. Cheap venues and still lots of fun. I'm shocked the WPT doesn't stop in Central America yet. Costa Rica would be a perfect fit.

Kevmath 05-12-2007 12:01 AM

Re: Turks and Caicos WPT Event

They were in Costa Rica in season 1, it was a $500 rebuy tournament that helped introduce the world to Clonie Gowen, who finished 10th.

Re: Turks and Caicos WPT Event

WPT is going to Barcelona this October and WPT does want to go to the Southern Cone i.e. Uruguay and Argentina, where casinoes do exist.

What happened to the Stars event in January?

I am assuming that PokerStars has withdrawn from the WPT in order to concentrate fully on the EPT and a rumored project in the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, New Zealand, Philippines).

PokerStars did not have a long term contract with the WPT. Instead, PokerStars hired the WPT on a year-by-year basis to produce TV for the Caribbean Adventure.

There is a Park Hyatt casino in Mendoza, Argentina, which is in the foothills of the Andes, far inland from Buenos Aires.

There are a number of casinoes in the resort city of Punta del Este in Uruguay. That would be a much better location for the WPT than Mendoza, Argentina.

I do know that 888.com recently signed a jersey sponsorship deal with the Club Nacional de Football (soccer) of the Uruguayan first division. The 888.com sponsorship only covers Nacional's matches in the pan-regional Copa Libertadores tournament (aired in Latin America on FOX Sports Latin America and in the U.S. on FOX Sports en Espanol.)

Shane, I know olivert comes across with some strange and intriquing twists on a story now and then. But, as a Gulf Coast veteran I would not take the 'cane info too lightly.

Call me overreacting, but where I was (the whole damn town), it ain't there no more!

Good luck.

Re: Turks and Caicos WPT Event

UltimateBet.NET/AbsolutePoker.NET have moved the Aruba Classic to October 2-6 to avoid a conflict with the WPT Turks and Caicos event.

Still no confirmation yet on the date of the Trump US Poker Championship, and whether ESPN (ESPN2) will have full coverage (12 hours of TV) as in the past.

Matt Savage 05-30-2007 01:30 AM

Re: Turks and Caicos WPT Event

Shane, I am running the Aruba event and we did move the dates to the 2-6th so that if people wanted to they could play both the Turks and the Aruba event. Even though the Turks event is a $10,000 buy-in and guarantees $1,000,000 for first I would bet the Aruba event (5K) will be a bigger prize pool. I did change the structure in Aruba to make it a little more player friendly.

Good to hear, Matt. Will it feature the signature 6-handed Savage end-stages?

Fwiw, Expedia doesn't come up with any flights from T&C to Aruba, so if anyone knows a better place to look for such intra-Caribbean flights, please post it.

Using Nassau, Bahamas as the hub seems like one way to do this, if anyone cares. Each leg currently costs about $250 on Expedia.

Re: Turks and Caicos WPT Event

The Moscow Millions being held at the FullTiltPoker.net poker room at Casino Cosmos in Moscow, Russia has been moved from October 12-14 to October 20-22 in order to avoid a conflict with WPT Barcelona on October 12-16.

WPTE, despite having to put the WPT on GSN for about 40% less in rights fee compared to what the Travel Channel used to pay, is still powerful enough to force UltimateBet.net and Casino Cosmos/FullTiltPoker.net to move their events.

shaniac 05-30-2007 03:12 PM

Re: Turks and Caicos WPT Event

Why wouldn't the WPT be powerful enough to have other events set their schedules around the WPT's already well-established tour?

I consider it simply good business. I remember hearing once something like if they open a Burger King right next door to a McDonald's, both places do more business.

In any case, the fall tour from the Caribbean to Europe has exciting implications.

The beach resort city of Mar Del Plata, Argentina, which is about 4-6 hours from Buenos Aires depending on the traffic, is another casino center in the Southern Cone.

One of these days, WPT will have an event in the Southern Cone. Whether the event will be at Mar Del Plata, Punta Del Este, Mendoza, or somewhere else is to be determined.

One implication: the Trump Taj Mahal (ESPN) US Poker Championship is the one being squeezed once again.

I do NOT see a 7-day window (5 days of play plus 2 travel days) between September 6 and November 13 that is free of conflicts with other televised tournaments for the USPC to schedule itself.

Remember that the 2006 USPC lost its star power when 64 brand-name players chose to skip the USPC in order to attend the PPL draft TV taping (which still has not aired on TV due to UIGEA-induced sponsorship issues.)
