edit: I remembered reading that the NHL has the highest of the 4 major american sports because of the sub rules during play stoppage. Apparently, the NBA wins.

Home team win % for last full season before 2/2007:
MLB: 54%
NFL: ~59%
NHL: 57%
NBA: 63%

If you look at this past season, the NBA's home court advantage is much bigger than the NHL's, and I suspect this would be the case over the long haul of past seasons as well.

College football and basketball are big, and the NFL is also pretty big. Baseball would probably be the least (the crowd just isn't nearly as big of a factor), although teams are built based on their stadium's dimensions, so certainly there is an advantage to being at home.

I'm going to have to say college basketball is the most, followed by college football, then the NBA, followed very closely by the NFL. Then hockey, then baseball.

I have seen a Jayhawk basketball game and it wasn't near the atmosphere as a few of the college football stadiums in the country:

Now this doesn't mean which one has the highest home field advantage though, it just would seem to me that College Football would have to be near the top.

Edit to say, that isn't my picture though I have been to the stadium a dozen times.

Based on rules that specifically favor the home team, I think this has to be the NHL. The road team must pick their players first on every faceoff. The home team then can matchup whoever they like. I can't think of any other sport that has a major rule that benefits the home team that significantly.

In terms of governing rules of what a home/away team can/cannot do, NHL is probably the most important.

Otherwise, I'd say soccer, followed by american football.

For the NFL, I think a significant home field advantage is weather. Maybe someone can dig up the stats, but I think cold weather teams have an advantage over visiting warm weather teams. I don't think the Buffalo Bills would have made 4 straight Super Bowls if it weren't for them owning nearly everybody who came to their field late in the season.

Games between Astroturf & natural grass teams should also lead to a slight home advantage to the home team.

This also leads me to believe baseball would have an advatage because every field is actually different. Familiarity with a field should create some advantage.

I may be talking out of my ass, but all this seems intuitive.

For the major American sports, I'd say NBA > NHL > NFL > MLB. I am guessing when you look at all sports, soccer is pretty far up on the list.

By the way, you guys are missing a lot of advantages that are inside the game. In baseball home team gets the last at bat, which is a huge advantage, and in hockey home team gets the last line change which is also advantage. In football stadium noise, but percentages wise, Im pretty sure NBA home court matters most.

At first I was thinking that they all get equal at bats, so it doesn't matter, but rethinking it, strategy changes quite a bit for the home team in the 9th inning batting last depending on how many runs they need, such as sacrificing, stealing bases, etc.
