Asians & Gambling

I have always wondered about the relationship with Asians and Gambling.

Why are there so many Asian people who love to gamble, why are there so many successful Asian poker players...especially of Viet decent.

could have something to do with communism. i really dont know much about how communism interacts with gambling, but the opportunity for them to win money on their own might be so compelling that they love to gamble. again, im just speculating to get the ball rolling.

Asians have loved to gamble long before communism. It's in their blood. But I do love taking the bus from chinatown to AC...free money!!!

There are two kinds of Asian poker players. Crazy maniacs who lose their money super fast, and crazy good lags who take your money super fast.

Asians are very materialistic people. Money and material are important to them, and they are willing to gamble to get those things.

Asians make more per capita than any other race in America, so they have more money to burn. It's not a wide enough income gap to bridge the disproportionalities in the casino though, but I'm trying.

1. I'm not sure what's dumb about suggesting a possible correlation.

2. I don't want to eat them, but I could.

No wait.. there are two types of asians.. the ones that are and the ones that aren't.

Whatever.. but you gotta agree that there's a lot'of em.

At many Chicago casinos winning players are mostly asians. I see them dominate many games. A lot of my Asian friends are also winning players around Chicago area.

My guess is that they are very disciplined.

Re: Asians & Gambling

This "possible correlation" is a HUGE stretch. I never questioned that asians make more money.

Gambling is just more popular in most asian cultures, thats all. The ones who play "crazy maniac poker" just look at poker as another game of chance.

Re: Asians & Gambling

Communal gambling has a long social tradition in many Asian countries, it is more acceptable there to gather to gamble as a form of socialising. When you get Asian immigrants in Western countries they will often go to casinos to meet others and have fun rather than to bars. This explains why such a large relative proportion of Asians seem to go to casinos.

As for their behaviour while there, well they are there to have fun. As far as poker goes I would suggest that on average Asian immigrants are playing a bit less to make money than non-immigrants, and a bit more for purely social reasons.

There is also an element in some Oriental cultures of showing off in gambling to others as a form of machismo, and you will see families together with the head of the family showing off his fearlessness to his family. I think there are also more philosophical / religious factors relating to the phenomenon of chance, I recall reading about it but not the details.

I currently live in China, and the above post pretty much sums it up. Its not that they are chasing money, but many people around the village and factory Im at play Maj on every freakin day! Like most of you play poker. But it is a way of socializing more then the thrill of gambiling. They love doing stuff together. For example when you walk into a "circuit city" type store, you'll see like 30 people just watching the movie up on the display screen. Everything is a spectacle to them and they just love watching things.

And for the asians in America, maybe some of them have no choice, they can't speak the language, therefore have trouble getting a job, and there only means of making $ is to gamble.

Also to the man who pointed out that Asians make more $ the white people is completed wrong. Why dont you come here and work in the factory for a year and see how long that money last you in the USA. Id say an average factory worker, working 40 hrs a week makes about $2,000 US a year AT MOST. If you need a job, Ill hook you up, no problem...

I doubt Asian and gambling has anything to do with their math abilities. I live in a neighborhood in Philadelphia with a large Asian population (Vietnamese and Cambodians) mostly, they have a lot of gamblers among their ranks, but not as many geniuses. I go to AC a few times a week, and without the Asian players and workers, the casinos wouldn't last long these days. And don't you forget their is a strong and organized criminal element amongst some Asian groups, that is where a lot of them get their loot to gamble like maniacs.

QFT. Much more social than American society. Mahjong is often played for money daily with friends or coworkers. The HK Jockey Club is the richest in the world. It's pervasive in Chinese culture.

There are many Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian players where I play poker and they seem to be the players enjoying themselves the most. They usually never complain about a bad beat and while most are loose there are certainly some tight ones. I enjoy the game much more when there are middle-aged Asians playing, because they dont take the game as seriously as your typical middle-aged white guy.

Re: Asians & Gambling

Not sure if it is the same in the US but here are a few facts in relation to Asians/Gambling in Australia:

Australians are one of (if not the biggest) gamblers in the world (per capita). They also have an Asian population of 7% (US has approx 4.2%). A recent productivity commission study (that’s the Federal Govt.) showed that as a group, Asians actually gamble less than many other cultural groups, including Anglo Saxons, however Asians who do gamble, do so at significantly higher rates than other ethnic groups.

I think that this helps to propel the myth (at least in Aus) that “all” Asians love to gamble.
