Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
One of my favorite authors. Can't feel too bad though. He certainly lived a long and productive life. Thanks for the link.

Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
Very sad. A true giant.

Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
Liked the guy a lot, but aside from Cat's Cradle, all I read of his were essays and the odd short story, and some interviews. Still had to love him, though. Shame he's gone.

One of the most memorable things he wrote was in the sirens of titan, where he described a planet of slimy organisms that resided in caves, who only had two phrases in their vocabulary. The first was "I am here", and the second was "I'm glad you are here." I wish the world was more like that. |

[/ QUOTE ] You should read more of his books they all tie together real nicely. At a bare minimum read "Sirens of Titan" and "Slaughterhouse Five". |

Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
One of the titans of twentieth-century literature, and one of the 10 greatest authors the United States has ever produced. I have every single one of his books, and what better time than now to reread them all? A sad day for all who ever came across the work if this cynical, humorous, sometimes caustic, but yet always gentle and profound man. RIP Kurt. I love your books, and I'll miss you.

Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
Vonnegut was the nuts, and absolutely wrecked his Daily Show appearance. Peace out.
|
Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
On the subject of Vonnegut art, my Stars avatar is the drawing of his bunghole from Breakfast of Champions. He was a crotchety old dude, but he was entertaining as hell, and I'm bummed out that he's dead.

I always wanted to meet him. He was one of my childhood heroes.

Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
Seriously, this is really sad. One of the few people I have ever considered a 'hero.' The world will be worse off without him.

Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
After I discovered his novels (~2001, when I was 21 years old), I would stay up all night at times reading them (I think I have read all but 1 of them). Very few authors are able to hold my attention for so long.
I was disappointed with his later works, but he was getting old and his writing reflected that. |

http://www.indiana.edu/~thtr/2004/wa...s/Vonnegut.jpg [/ QUOTE ] maybe an amusing anecdote. He was on my friend's book show, and signed one of his books like that, but he also wrote "will you be my friend?" and left his phone number. What a lovely man he was. The world will miss him. |

Kurt Vonnegut will never die.

Re: Kurt Vonnegut has died
Yeh, Cormac McCarthy can definitely be put in the same category as Kurt. Stephen King? Perhaps you're leveling.
