Played a little on the gulf coast---
I think in july the Hard Rock opens in biloxi.
The competition is gonna grow in the next few yrs so I'll be curious to see what happens.

I also heard that harrahs is going to close either the poker room at the grand or the horseshoe.
Might have an interesting twist on things.

I'd say quite a bit. You're going to have to change your name to Grizzly.

Are you serious? Harrah's is closing one of the poker rooms? Why would they do this, seriously... Has anyone else heard this rumor?

I heard that they were going to rebrand the Grand as just Harrah's, but not that they would close the poker room. Can't imagine they would do that.

Harrah's might do anything at any time.

FWIW, I heard (about a year ago) the Grand is going to be rebranded Ceasars. I personally find that highly unlikely.

Goldstrike gives them a run for their money...but I think that most poker players attach a certain stigma to playing at any Horseshoe because of the WSOP/Benny Binion/Vegas good 'ol days history that seems to follow the Horseshoe name around.

I'll be there this weekend. (April 13/14/15). My bachelor party is in Memphis, and we're spending Saturday gambling in Tunica.

Does anybody have any input on the Saturday tourneys? I was leaning towards the $100 freezeout @ Sam's Town. Any info. on starting chips/structure of any of the tournaments would be greatly appreciated.

the 200+30 at the Shoe is better, if you can swing it. Same amount of rake paid, but the % is 1/2. More chips, better structure, better room, bigger prize pool, etc.

Re: Horseshoe Tunica best pokerroom in MS?

I called a couple of the poker rooms, and found one that seems better @ the Grand Casino. It's a $100 Freeze Out ($25 juice). Starting stack 5000 (rather than 2500 @ Sam's Town). Structure seems kinda fast, but I think they're all gonna be fast.

I'd be down w/ the $200 + $30, but I'm going for my bachelor party, and not sure many of the other dudes would be willing to pony up $200. Still looking for anyone who's played in one of these...

Why is the Horseshoe Tunica considered the best?

I keep hearing that it is the best, but I'm curious why? I've had very little experience in Tunica, but my limited experience has been that the Grand has more tourist, the Horseshoe (& Goldstrike) more regulars. Sam's town also has lots of tourists but they used to not spread very many games and allowed smoking, so I gave up on it. (I understand that they no longer do allow smoking in the PR.) Obviously everywhere is filled with the Money-maker want-a-be's when the tourneys are in town, but the other has been my general experience. Am I wrong?

I play 1/2 or 2/5 NL and I'd rather play a lot of tourist - even if they buy in for $200 or $300 than against a bunch of regulars. Of course Tunica regulars could be loose, independently wealthy regulars, but that's not exactly the image I'm used to.

So my question is: Why is it better? Better atmosphere? Softer games? More types of games? I'm hoping that "better" doesn't mean that its the spot "where all the poker players play". That's not what I'm looking for.

Those of you that have been there a good bit please help those of us that get there about 2 days a year.

Thanks,

-Napawino

Re: Why is the Horseshoe Tunica considered the best?

Horseshoe is the best for a number of reasons.
Reason 1. Game variety. Gold Strike may spread the same number of games but they're all 3-6 and 1-2 NL. At Horseshoe you'll find 4-8, 10-20, 20-40 and stud. Omaha 10-20 with a half kill had been going strong the last few weeks.
Reason 2. Food. Dolye himself said Horseshoe Tunica has one of the best buffets in the country. The snack bar is also awesome even if you like your food table side. I have yet to say no to writing a comp to anyone that plays.
Reason 3. Staff. We have the best dealers and floor in town by far.

Re: Why is the Horseshoe Tunica considered the best?

Gold Strike is nice (and to be fair, I played there longer), but I think Horseshoe is probably better. Still, flipping between the two is good.

look here Mid South Gaming Guide....

And you'll see all the tournamnets offered everyday.

The structures are all crap shoots, and are really just push on an A/build a stack tournies. Try looking at the shoe tourney on Friday/Saturday.

Why is the Horseshoe the best ?
1) Comps are easy to get.
2) Food is GREAT
3) Variety of games (Limit/No Limit/stud etc..)
4) Solid tournaments that aren't donkey shovefests.

The Goldstrike is a solid casino, I'd recommend it.

What is the poker rate at the Horseshoe? I vaguely recall reading somewhere that it had changed recently.

One thing I have been curious about is why Horseshoe doesn't track your poker play with the players card. For instance I have enough play on my card at Sam's Town that I could easily get comped as soon as I walk in the poker room, plus mailings. Unless I play BJ or something at HS I never get in the system.

Harrah's doesn't give a [censored] about poker players and will never mail anything to you if that's all you play. My wife plays quarter video poker for about two hours every time we go to tunica and she gets tons of [censored] in the mail; I play poker only and get zero.

Is the Horseshoe the best poker room in Mississippi?
Yes !
What is this? Some sort of a trick question?

Is it the best poker room in the midwest?
Sure.
Probably a few contenders for 2nd thru 4th.

Is it the best poker room in the USA?
Maybe.
Venetian has plusher surroundings. AC and Foxwoods has more cranky players. Bellagio has a ruder floor staff. LA Commerce card barn has 150 more tables -- filled with thousands of crazy people.

So, yeah. I think its the best in the USA. But then, I haven't played in Detroit or Reno yet.

Re: Horseshoe Tunica best pokerroom in MS?

I've played in both. Go with the Grand's 1pm over Sams on the basis of the starting chipstacks. Levels are the same at a pathetic 15 minutes. I will say though Sams seems to get more people for their tournaments, so prize pool if you get lucky would be bigger there.

Best structure by far is at the Shoe though as others have said.

Re: Horseshoe Tunica best pokerroom in MS?

For softest cash games, nicest room/chairs/tables/food service/management/dealers: BEAU RIVAGE hands down. Best buffet too, comped of course.

Have to deduct points for the $5+1 drop on limit games and time drop for NL last time I was there though, that is the only thing the rooms in Tunica beat it on in my opinion.
