hi @ all! What du u think about pfizer?

hi guys!
I am going to buy pfizer (ISIN: US7170811035).
It is a long-term investment, i can easy hold it two or 3 years.

What do u guys think about it?

I think you're making a mistake by concentrating risk.

2-3 years isn't that long. Also I would assume (aka have done no research) that there is a lot of uncertainty due to the fact that they are closing the Michigan offices.

Re: hi @ all! What du u think about pfizer?

When I make a long term investment I'm thinking more like 20 years, not 2...

That said, I think you could find a better company to buy than PFE. Please give us some reasons why you think this company is significantly better than many other companies you potentially purchase. ( You might have to do some actual research in order to understand why this is NOT the right company for you to buy )

hint: check out their earnings growth over the past few years to begin with...

Re: hi @ all! What du u think about pfizer?

I like PFE a lot. At one time held about 9000 shares. Now only holding about 800. Was up about 10K on the 800 shares, but lost it all back over the past two weeks.

If PFE drops a bit more, i might buy some options.

Also looking at DELL. But am worried about the SEC inquiry.

Re: hi @ all! What du u think about pfizer?

well i know that 2-3 years isnt this long. But i am just 19 years old so maybe it is much time for me.
Well, i just need a stock in the pharma sector.
And i thougt (and still think) that pfizer is one of the best.

Or do you have any other suggestions?

Mike

Pfizer just lost patent for Zithromax. Pfizer will lose patent for Lipitor in 2010. There follow up to Lipitor was pulled during clinical trials because it did not perform better than Lipitor. Lipitor makes up a huge portion of it's profit. They spend too much money on advertising and have very few drugs in the pipeline in the future. Personally, I feel like the pharmaceuctical companies are investing in the present and not in the future.

I'm a PharmD candidate, and while obviously I don't know how this company is going to end up, I think nearly all the pharmaceutical companies are just pushing overpriced drugs that are barely better than the classics. I would personally never invest in them because of how skeptical I am about them.

Re: hi @ all! What du u think about pfizer?

hmm the thing is that i have already some Pfizer stocks.
What would u guys do with it.
I bought them at about 26$ and now they are at 24,74 USD.

Maybe i should wait until they go up a lil bit and then sell them to invest in some other sectors.
What do u think about it?

Or in which sector should i invest, i have the financial sector (lloyds, RBS), i have hennes & mauritz(clothes), i have asia power (energy), daimlerchrysler (cars) and some telecommunication stocks.
In which other sector do u think i should invest?
I would be glad to get some help because i am relatively new to stock, i am trading since September 2005.

Thanks, Mike

Maybe instead of sectors you should concentrate more on asset class, as this is what defines diversity. If it is individual stocks that you are trading, then asset class isnt as important but then there are separate things to consider.

Are you trying to diversify with ind. stocks? this is even a more tricky scenario.....more info needed

any study iv ever come across has shown that the top selling drugs in most categories are the same or even worse than cheaper generics available. Marketing is pretty powerful. My dad groans every time he sees a commerical that ends in "ask your doctor about ..." because he always gets calls from schizophrenics about ulcer mediation and the like.

Re: hi @ all! What du u think about pfizer?

Novartis is in a better long-term position than Pfizer due to the increase in generics sales.

Well yeah im going to buy ind. stocks. I dont have any fonds or stuff like that.
What does "asset class" mean?
Im german, i dont really understand this one?

And yes, novartis maybe would also be fine. Maybe i will sell pfizer and buy novartis.
The actual rating is"buy"...

Why not?
They should know what they are talking about.
But i know what you mean. I should do my own research and so on. I do this but i also listen to what the analysts are saying.
They need to know dont they?

analyst reports can be pretty useful, in the sense that they can highlight main issues and tell you what you should be looking for. But online "buy" "sell" ratings are pretty much random.

For starters, you are seeing the analysts information, after all the smart money has already "acted" on the information they provide.

Beyond that, ratings are meaningless, and slow to change... take note of how many downgrades occur after a stock has already dropped... what's the usefulness of that?

well i know that analysts are often wrong but they should be better than the average investor?!?
So if a newbie comes and doesn`t know what he is doing it would be better if he listens to them.
That`s what i mean.

No, listening to no advice (and making random decisions) is better than using analyst ratings to make decisions.

If you don't know what you are doing... stick your money in an index fund.

So why are there any analists if they are useless?
Well i also thougt about buying an index fund but the only problem was that the best one have had too much spread (about 4,5%).
I think i am better if i put my money in stocks myself.
But i think im gonna split it, lets say about 10% of my money in funds. Is that ok?

I didn't say analysts were useless... just that you shouldn't be making decisions based on their ratings

ahnuld gave one example of how to use their information.

Had to ban Mike, rule about using a celebrity poker players name without actually being that player.

Re: hi @ all! What du u think about pfizer?

I personally do not think buying a big pharma stock is a good idea right now. That is all:) Actually, if I had to gamble in big pharma I would take either Lilly, GSK, or Roche. Lilly has some issues with Zyprexa patents, but Cymbalta sales should allay those concerns in 5 years and quite frankly, $50/share isn't unreasonable right now.

Pfizer is just trouble. They've got way too many mouths to feed and their backup to the Lipitor franchise has just been pulled. Its not a good buy.
