HSBC bank says: pokah be illegal

i told my friend that his card will work on UB, he just has to call it in. he attempts it, and UB tells him it was declined, his bank is HSBC.

today he calls me, and is a very good friend of mine so i believe his words 100%, and the person on the other end of the phone was HSBC bank telling him they put a hold on his card and asked if he had attempted to deposit money on a poker site. he said yes, he's sorry, he didn't know it was illegal. they took the hold off his card and said:

"yes. playing poker in the united states online is against the law and punishable by law. if you try this again we're revoking your card."

what. the. [censored].

Did he go with "put your supervisor on the phone" or "cancel my card right now" first?

What the [censored] does the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Company know about what is legal in the US? What right do they have saying that if their customer tries to use their card in any manner that they choose the bank will revoke the card?

Whereas the HSBC in England are very happy with money going in and out from poker sites, and are very happy to lend money based on withdrawals Joy

What right????????????? It is the Banks credit card, not the customers---read the fine print----The Bank is loaning money to their customner every time the customer uses a credit card so the Bank has every right to do what the hell they want with the credit card/customer as long as it is within the laws of the land.

A couple years ago, I tried to deposit using my HSBC debit card not knowing any better, and I got a call from the Security Dept telling me the same exact thing. So, this has always been their stance I guess.

I'd respond by closing my account with them - if they had me as a customer. And they don't. And won't.

Yeah, what do those honkies know about America.
Maybe if they were the second biggest bank in the world by market cap, incorporated and headquartered in the UK, maybe they would have a clue. But they're not, right?

i thought UB was slick when it charged credit cards. don't they have fake purchase code to show up to your credit card? so it won't show up as poker. oh well, at least my credit card works.

my bank did the same thing, credit unions, criminey, this is all just a big damn nightmare, cant wait for it to go away.

Siegmund 03-13-2007 05:41 PM

Re: HSBC bank says: pokah be illegal

@Annulus: they do - but, the thing is, they try ONCE to deposit directly, and get declined, before they go that route. .. so the bank WILL see ONE transaction attempted from a poker site, and if their security levels are set high enough, once may be enough to get you a phone call.

Re: HSBC bank says: pokah be illegal

I've had two bogus charges on my HSBC card in the last six months. It took forever to get these reversed. They were obviously more concerned with protecting the credit card crooks who were trying to scam me than in taking care of an honest, law abiding customer.
So, in short, HSBC loves crooks, hates poker, and has the worst hut dwelling support in the world.
