How big of a deal?

I went to college in a small town of about 5000 people. One day a couple years ago my friend and I went to the local bank to get money out of my checking account to goto canterbury. I asked for about $8000 if I remember right. At first they told me no they couldn't give me that much but after talking with a manager they agreed to do it. The main teller laidy said in a real nasty condecending tone "what do you need this much cash for anyhow?!" and my friend replied "we're drug dealers ok?" like all offended. She said oh or something and continued getting the cash. She then asked us if we wanted an officer to come to protect us to where we were going. I said no we'll be fine. It took about a half hour but we finally got the money and left.

I take it they filed one of those SAR's...and in general those are no big deal? Obviously I'm not a drug dealer nor have I ever been involved with people who are to my knowledge but yeah.

I'm not losing sleep over this or anything but I've always been curious about it.

as long as ur taxes are up to date, just laugh in the teller's face.

Re: How big of a deal?

Rofl. If they have that much cash on hand, and you have that much in your account (probably way more) - how could they ever say "no, we can't give you that much"? Probably just standard procedure for withdrawals over X amount, and that will filter out alot of fraudsters, but still.. I'd be pretty angry at that point.

The worst they can do is report it to the gov't, and all they'll use it for is tax purposes. This may or may not be a big deal to you.

Re: How big of a deal?

As an ex-banker (28 years in the industry), I can tell you that this is because of a liability issue. In the past, banks have been sued by customers who have made large cash withdrawals and then been mugged. Of course, it was the banks fault for allowing them to take so much cash. Hence the offer to provide an escort. It's called CYA.

BK,

There are a bazzilion SARs filed every year... they go to a large wharehouse at Area51

Don't worry about it.

Like the $8 an hour teller cares.

Re: How big of a deal?

Funny, I have the tellers at my bank pretty much trained. They only keep about $2000 in their drawers at the counter.

When they see me walk in the door, one of the tellers automatically heads for the vault for more cash, so they will have it by the time I get thru the line and to the teller.

I am thinking of talking to the manager to set up a VIP line, kind of like in Vegas, so I don't have to wait so long.

Pay the fee for cashiers checks-if your account is big enough they may not charge a fee. Easy and safe.

I was given the runaround when I withdrew a similar amount from my local bank. I finally told them I was leaving for Vegas, they handed me the cash and said "HAVE FUN!"

before a vegas trip a few years ago i went to my bank and tried to take out 10k. this must have raised suspicions as they did a signature check and some other security stuff and i had to talk to the manager. then they said they could only give me 5k bc they simply dont keep enough cash on hand. i was told i could go to another branch and get more or they could write me a check which i could cash in vegas. i opted for the check which was a mistake as the scumbag money changer in vegas charged like 5% or something absolutely outragous. ya, that felt good after dropping 4k in an hr in a 40 game.

as i was leaving the teller asked me what i was doing with so much cash. she was hot little blond from eastern europed with a sexy accent. i think my bank imports them bc they are cheaper. her name was bella. i proudly told her i was going to vegas to make a fortune playing poker. she seemed geniunely concerned. omg, pls dont lose all that money she purred. dont worry honey, im gonna come back with double. she perked up and said she couldnt wait to see me again. ahh, yes my plan was in place.

then i lost it all in vegas and havent been back.

I don't know if this would change the outcome, but if anyone had the nerve to ask me that my reply would be "I don't see how it's any of your business".

Re: How big of a deal?

At my local Chase bank, I get crap from the tellers all the time. Every once in a while, I'll go to Windsor to play in the uncapped 10/20 game. I normally withdraw 7-8K and they always throw a fit and ask me why I need so much cash. After the third time, I spoke with the branch manager about this and they said it was protocol to make sure I wasn't doing something stupid with my money. It's a lame response and basically just allowing the tellers to be nosy (all between 35-50 year old women). I just tell them I'm going to play poker, but next time I need a good amount of cash, I'm gonna tell them it's none of their business.

I'll usually make a fairly large wire transfer to the Bellagio or something before I go to Vegas, and my bank guys think it's the coolest thing ever.

Seriously. I've never had a problem withdrawing (6k) or depositing (5k many times and 40k once) at my bank and it's just a branch in a grocery store.

Re: How big of a deal?

Right, but you live in Las Vegas. This is probably much more common there than it is in a non-gambling city. Any time I've done a decent four figure cash transaction at my bank, I get the concerned looks and all that BS.

I can't understand you guys who deposit and withdraw constantly. Why wouldn't you just keep enough cash on hand to play without having to go to the bank everytime you hit a minor downswing. The time and effort of going to the bank everytime you want to play has got to be worth something. Doesn't anybody keep a stash of cash in their mattress anymore?

Why not just cash it at the casino cage? I have not been charged a fee in the past, but the last time I did it was about 10 years ago. Maybe that has changed????

I do if for no other reason than I like looking at it from time to time. It's nice to have a couple 10K bundles lying around. Also, for the inevitable retard who responds about the interest I'm losing, I don't care.

i play decent stakes live like once or twice a year. its not really feasible to keep 10k lying around all the time for that. plus, when i do i spend it pretty quick, usually on stuff that you can only buy with cash.
