*** Official February, March, April Chatter Thread ***

Official Chatter thread for February - March - April.

Rules: absolutely anything goes in here, no matter how off topic, as long as it doesn't violate the site's terms and conditions or the general tone of this forum (i.e. still be respectful to each other). But you can talk about any subject you want in here... . Discuss anything you want!

January thread for historical purposes:
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...Number=8986399

EDIT:

I'll reboot to a new thread if this one becomes unwieldy, otherwise this will be the chatter thread through the end of April.

So I finally got my WSEX check and deposited it at the bank, but they said they had to put a hold on it for 5 days. They've never done this before and the amount is nothing obscene (2K), I've been banking with them for about 6 months now.

They said I can talk to the branch manager to get the hold off earlier, but I don't want to end up looking shady or lying too much about where the money is from. Suggestions?

Blah blah, another random question. In the FAQ, it gives donbest.com for archived lines. I'm specifically referring to the NHL lines on totals from CRIS. How do I read this? If for example I want to know what odds the o/u 6.5 closed at yesterday for each game, what would they be?

Thanks again.

There is absolutely zero to worry about. Banks routinely place holds on the funds for any sort of check they consider suspicious, especially overseas checks. All this does is hold the deposit of funds until the check actually clears on the back end. That's all they're doing here - they will place a hold on the funds until the check is processed ("settled") on the back end by the originating bank. Because its a foreign bank, it will take a while.

Most people don't realize this, but almost all of the checks that are written (currently so close to 100% as to be indistinguishable from it, however recent legislation under the title Check21 is working to change that) are cleared by physically returning the check to the bank of origin. That means, in the case of your international check, the check leaves your bank for the airport, hops a flight to Costa Rica or whever, arrives at the foreign bank, the bank verifies the check, and then issues settlement to the bank in question where it was cashed/deposited.

For international checks this can take several days.

Depending on the situation and the policies and procedures of the bank, these holds can be applied strictly or loosly. Some banks will place holds on any check funds over a certain amount from any non-major bank. Sometimes that means something as innocent as a couple hundred dollars from a check written on a small town bank or credit union. Also depending on policy and procedure, these holds can always be overriden by someone's authority. Oftentimes its a personal banking representative (PBR), i.e. one of the people you see at a desk in the lobby who are there to help you with opening accounts or more serious transactions than the tellers. sometimes, as happened to the OP, its a branch manager.

There is absolutely zero concern about getting a legit check paid (i.e. a check drawn on a real bank account with the funds present). it might take time, but its going to happen.

There is zero in the UIGEA that affects checks, either paying a gambling site by check or receiving a payment by check. There are zero banking regulation in place today which would prevent this, either. There is possible coverage under some of the anti-money-laundering provisions which originated in the USA-PATRIOT act and banking regulations which followed, but they're currently not being used in that way at all - currently the AML and USA-PATRIOT regulations are checking transactions against a blacklist, and to my knowledge none of the gambling sites are on that blacklist (yet).

You can actually write a legal check on a bar napkin as long as it has the requisite information. You won't get the teller to cash it obviously, but you can get the bank manager to authorize it. 99% of the time they'd want to hold the money till the check settled, obviously... but its legal.

Qualifications, if you're curious:

I worked eight years for a major financial institution, in positions ranging up and through Director of Information Security and Chief Technology Architect. I currently do consulting work for a variety of companies today including a wide variety of financial institutions, including some of the largest banks in the US. I'm intimately familiar with bank process and regulatory requirements, including those outlined above.

Re: *** Official February Chatter Thread ***

Thanks for all of that. I am and was certain that the money is safe and all, I just would like access to it sooner rather than later especially since I've been waiting on Neteller and WSEX took about two weeks to get this to me.

Would your recommendation be to just wait for the funds to clear then? Or is there a way for me to talk to the branch manager without mentioning gambling?

With my money consolidated at the safest books, for the first time in years I wasn't able to get a good line on "no safety." I did risk 1% of bankroll to win 0.125% on "no OT" and "no blocked punt" though.

Personally i'd wait for them to clear. At this point coming back in after you've made the deposit is probably going to look more suspicious and draw more attention to you than you want. I'd just let the check clear which should only be another couple banking days.\

If you did want to call, I'd call up the bank's main number and just ask to see if the deposit was misplaced (ideally you should have your deposit slip handy) because you hadn't seen the money hit your account. You could also do this in person - just walk in with the deposit slip and ask if they bank made a mistake. Don't mention anything about them holding the money, just act like you made any other normal deposit, waited a couple days, and didn't see the money so you wanted to check it didn't go to the wrong account or something.

I have been waiting for 3 things: tax refunds from the federal and 2 state governments, unauthorized charges to my debit card to be reversed by my bank, and a check from TradeSports.

The check from Tradesports is the first and only one that's cleared.

Shows how competent our government and banks are.

Thank you, UIGEA, for watching out for me!

Hey guys, I have a question:

Can I be successful at sports betting even if I don't know ANYTHING about sports? If I will only pick lines from this forum, can I achieve positive ROI?

I am interested in gambling in general and since sports betting is such a big part of it, I want to learn something about it. I was thinking about depositing $100 in to a sportsbook and betting $1 per time just to get a feal of it.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Yes. Pick off soft lines at slow to move books and/or follow known winners.

What have you people never banked before? Jesus. Any non payroll check regardless has a "hold" for 5 days on it. Correction, any non payroll check not from your bank. Totally standard. It's okay and absolutely nothing to worry about.

That's not true. I've never had them place a hold on a check from Neteller, Pinnacle, Stars, etc., this was the first time. Every other time my money has been available that evening. Either way, I was never concerned about my money being safe but rather getting access to it earlier without jeopardizing it.

You probably hate this kind of questions but I have to ask:

What sportsbook should I open an account with if I only want to deposit $100? The reason I ask is because I don't want to open an account where I can get a big deposit bonus later on. So basicaly I want to deposit without getting any bonuses. Thanks

Depends what you are looking for. Are you looking for low vig (-105) on standard events and don't really care about hitting early opening numbers? If so, a place like Cascade would be good for you. Are you looking to hit early opening numbers or a wide variety of props? If so, a place like TheGreek would be good for you.

I'd probably go with Cascade or Matchbook then. I seem to remember someone saying there is a rounding bug in Cascade's new software that allows you to bet small amounts vig-free (like $5 to win $5). If that is true, then choose them for sure.

Re: *** Official February Chatter Thread ***

Probably a good idea to not use a good bonus book first, so if you decide to get into it more you can take advantage of it later. For $1 -110 instead of -105 won't break the bank, you'll be able to determine what you would have won @ -105 after testing. I'd probably suggest Matchbook; learning the exchange will give you a good grasp of sports betting.

I'd probably just deposit at Bodog if I just had $100 to get started...

Their weak prop bets and 1x bonus rollover on the initial deposit makes up for their weak lines.

In Mexico, you're about 3 years too late...In the US, it totally depends on the girl. I know plenty of girls that still looked like pencils at 17, and at 26-29 looked like movie stars. For a lucky few, that trend continues into mid-30s or even later. [Very few, but still.]

Besides, girls that peak at 18 only get worse-looking...you can't drive around the HS parking lot forever, Thremp, as you get to 30 and 40 they'll call the cops on you...
