Help increase my music collection!
So I picked up today's issue of Blender and I realized how out of the loop I am with regards to music. Let's see if OOT can help me out with some good albums from last year (2005 as well):
I know a lot of popular music from the radio (don't listen much but I know what's what) and a lot of "new" bands that are becoming popular now I know from back in the day when I listened to more emo/punk/pop punk music (AFI for example). My favorite album from last year was Bloc Party (maybe 2005) and I also really like the Raconteurs(anything Jack White and bluesy rock). I think the Killers are kind of cool but their 2nd album was pretentious crap. I don't really dig pop emo enough (Fall out boy, Panic! at the disco) anymore to warrant getting any of their albums. There are a lot of bands I've heard about but dont' know a lot of music by (Arctic Monkeys, The Academy is..., The HoldSteady) so if people like those I will listen to that as well. Contrary to my title I don't listen to a ton of rap; I like a lot of it but usally choose not to listen to it as an album. However I'll take suggestions in that field too. Now DO IT! |
Re: Help increase my music collection!
Theres too much music to reccommend.
What i do suggest though, is either Pandora or Last.fm (do google searches for either) Both are good. I'm currently using Last.fm. First of all it takes note of everything you listen to, then recommends you stuff based on that, and second of all, if you download the software, it has a radio feature, whereby you type in a tag (e.g. 80s) or an artist name, and it will then play you continuous music that relates to that artist or tag. Great for discovering new and old music. |

Re: Help increase my music collection!
Yeah, Last.fm is similar, but has notable differences, give it a try.

Re: Help increase my music collection!
Try branching out to some new genres. I did and it is great. With one exception, none of the artists listed below were known to me 1-2 years ago.
"Unique" Punk Rock: Flogging Molly Electronica: Sleepthief New Age/Folk: Celtic Woman Indie Rock: Liz Phair (older albums only) Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock: Jewel |

I also really like the Raconteurs(anything Jack White and bluesy rock). [/ QUOTE ] You might like Cold War Kids. Their music is very bluesy, although not nearly as talented as Jack White. |
Re: Help increase my music collection!
The Black Keys. Rubber Factory. 2004 But great album.

Re: Help increase my music collection!
Radiohead
Oasis Orange 9MM Snow Patrol Smashing Pumpkins Shindown The Fold Just to name a few... EDIT: If you search them on last.fm, you can find other bands like them. |

I'd suggest their first album (the big come up), or Rubber Factory. The last album is rad as well, but it's a slight (very slight) departure from their style. Also, you've probably heard of The Strokes, but they are so good they deserve a mention anyway. EDIT: That dude masquerading as a chick beat me to it. |
Re: Help increase my music collection!
If someone asked me "give me an indie rock album from the last couple years" I would tell them to go get wolf parade's "Apologies to the Queen Mary." If they liked that I could give them more suggestions, but that'd be the album i'd start them with.

Re: Help increase my music collection!
Singer songwriter from brooklyn named Kevin Devine. He used to front a band called Miracle of 86 which had some minor indie success. The guy is young, tours constantly and puts out new albums all the time.
A couple good first songs to listen to are called No Time Flat or Cotton Crush - spend 8 minutes and listen to them and youll be hooked. He has a myspace page with some songs up, not sure if either of these are up there but they might be. |

Coldplay, Hinder, 3 Doors Down, Switchfoot [/ QUOTE ] Except for Coldplay, this stuff isn't very good ESPECIALLY Hinder. New Bloc Party comes out next week, the Decemberists new album is awesome, The Format "Dog Problems" was one of my favorite albums of last year. Just a start there. |
Re: Help increase my music collection!
"Coldplay, Hinder, 3 Doors Down, Switchfoot"

Re: Help increase my music collection!
Sufjan Stevens

Re: Help increase my music collection!
Try some Beck. He has a wide range of sounds.
(The below groupings are meant as a general guide as each album has songs that could be considered as a different genre.) Alt/Rock -- Odelay, Mellow Gold Alt/Pop -- Guero, The Information Country - Mutations Funk - Midnight Vultures Easy Listening - Sea Change (arguably his best album) |
