Stuff to do in Vancouver?

I'll be flying into Vancouver for a few days to take care of poker-related stuff, and I figured I might as well do the tourist stuff while I'm there. A quick Google search brought up Stanley Park, Granville Island, a bunch of other parks, and museums. I'm sure all of those are nice but I'm not really the nature/history/museum type.

So, OOT, please recommend cool stuff to do, food to eat, etc. I will post pics if I get to snap some.

I'd say Rec Beach but it's winter, so that's out.

Last time I was there, (and this is going back a while, 1997), I didn't see much nudity. I saw a lot of people selling every single drug known to man however.

I heard the Marble Arch is closed. Very sad. I also heard you could buy pot and crack on the street like getting a gallon of milk on the corner store. I was there for bible study though so I wouldn't know about that. I also heard you could get a *real* threesome with a couple hot canadian hookers for $200 canadian, which at the time was about $130. But again I wouldn't have any first hand knowledge or sweet sweet beautiful memories of that.

Met an older woman in Vegas a few years ago who told me almost out of the blue that a person could get in a lot of trouble in Vancouver. But again, I wouldn't know anything about that.

Oh shoot. You just reminded me that I'm gonna need Canadian monies. I was planning to bring some American dollars in my pocket - should I get them converted at a bank when I arrive in Vancouver or beforehand? Also, how hard is it gonna be for me to obtain a form of ID? Not necessarily a DL but if I walk into a DMV and request an ID, would they be able to give me one the same day?

I like movies, long walks on the beach... just kidding, I don't narrow my interests down to the point where you wouldn't be able to suggest anything. I just want to do stuff that's fun and memorable. Food - whatever the town specialties are.

Stanely Park or Granville Island, isn't that where they filmed the new Wicker Man? Gotta be one of the most beautiful places on the planet, defo check it out.

Gastown is a pretty good place for general night life and restaurants. What kinda bars/clubs do you like?

Granville street is also not bad.

Robson street has lots of stores but is touristy, if you like that sorta thing go there. Main street has other good stores and is not as touristy. Commercial drive is another good street, with lots of cheap food and some interesting spots to kick it. A little hippyish in places.

This may sound strange, but spend some time around the Downtown eastside if you can handle it. It's one of the craziest places around and it's worth a visit.

If you like to smoke, the amsterdam cafe is a good place to start. PM for more info I guess.

Also, whistler is obv a good place to go if you wanna ski/snowboard/party. It's about a 2-3 hour drive.

check out clubzone for club listings if you want to find places to party at night

temperature is hovering around freezing point so walking around all day wouldn't be my number one choice of fun things to do.

whereabouts are you staying? there's tons of things to see or do but it would help to know what you're looking for in the first place

amsterdam cafe is great and the place next door has the volcano vaporizer for rent which is a good $5 spent if you've never tried it.

Vancouver probably has some of the best sushi in North America. I have never been there, but I have always wanted to try Tsunami Sushi on Robson street - apparently there is a little river running through the restaurant, and little boats float by carrying your food.

Tsunami is ok. A lot of people rate Tojo's as being in the top 5 in north america. My favorite right now is Aki Sushi.

The best value for sushi/korean BBQ/hot pot is Shabusen on Granville and 14th. Anyone agree?

Money - wherever. If you really want to be balla just pay for [censored] in USD. Exchange rate is like 15%, but most places (non-banks) give between 0%(par) and 8%. American money is pretty much accepted everywhere though.

ID - not sure why you'd need this, but you aint walking into icbc and getting an ID on the same day. I have a BCID and I got it rushed, and it took 3 days. And I'm pretty sure it's only for British Columbia residents anyway.

Shabusen is awesome, I have no idea what you're on.

There are definitely better pure sushi places, but for the sushi + Korean BBQ combination, Shabusen is sweet. I definitely recommend it for some all you can eat goodness.

Where would you suggest to go for a better place like Shabusen? thanks

Re: Stuff to do in Vancouver?

in general these places don't have the freshest seafood. in terms of value shabusen is fine but for the connoiseur there are better options for great sushi in the city if you're willing to fork over the cash. i don't go out for korean bbq much so i couldn't tell you where the good ones are in the city.

for dimsum, check out sun sui wah on main

traz 01-29-2007 10:21 PM

Re: Stuff to do in Vancouver?

It's the combo of good sushi + good korean bbq that makes shabusen so good. It's not the best in either, but it's damn good in both departments.

I'll vouch for sun sui wah though.
