Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
This is a gift my mom got as a stocking stuffer sitting on a magazine. This wasn't planned.

This is just part of it. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/158/3...2ac4c7bbd8.jpg Many more photos located here My Flickr Page |

I doubt he'd be 298 if he didn't have a lot of damn tasty food to ingest.
Nice work becoming less fat! |
Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
Actually the food pictured is part of the reason I'm dropping, especially the later photos. A lot of the [censored] that might look bad for you is all super lean turkey and [censored]. The food i cook at home is SO much better than if I go out and eat other crap.

Dids, I think I speak for everyone when I say, please take more pictures of your sister's cat doing various activities. Keep up the good work.

Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
My sister's cat is a total diva.
You cannot touch her unless you are my sister. When she sits, she does it totally upright with her tail perfectly curled around her. Kinda like this, but it's a bit messed up because she's looking at me. She's in the tub because she'll only drink running water, so she just gets in there and waits until somebody turns it on. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/139/3...41bb72fb30.jpg Our other cat, which you can see in some later photos is basically Emily plus like 20 lbs. For as pretty and cold as Emily is, Amber's fantastically affectionate and a total slob. |

Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
You seem to have a real knack--good eye for nature photographs.

Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
Dids,
Why are you not liking Steingartenīs "The Man Who Ate Everything"? The writing is good and the guy is a complete freak. The whole "I want to find the best french fries so why not buy about a hundred pounds of different potatoes and half a dozen deep fryers and try out combinations until it works" thing is just fantastic. |
Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
Stevie,
Mostly because after reading a ton of Ruhlman and Bourdain, I was just kinda sick of that kind of book, plus they're both better writers. That said, the section you mentioned was probably my favorite. |

Books about food

Anyone else read Bourdainīs fictional novels? "The Bobby Gold Stories" was enjoyable, have not read the others as yet. |
Re: Books about food
Yeah, I think I just found a new source for background images. Really like these.
PS.. My mom does alot of oil paint landscapes, would you mind if I sent this to her to use as inspiration? |
Re: Books about food
StevieG,
"Why are you not liking Steingartenīs "The Man Who Ate Everything"? The writing is good and the guy is a complete freak." Wow, perhaps 'cause the book sucks hard and is just horribly written. Ruhlman, Bourdain, and Reichl's books are all fifty times better than Steingarten's. That book was the worst food book I've read in years. If you haven't read it, get The Soul of a Chef by Ruhlman. It's probably my favorite in that genre. I'm not a huge Bill Buford fan, but I'm looking forward to reading Heat. Sounds pretty fun. |
Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
That's crazy, my family's cabin is in one of your flikr photos. I haven't been up there for a while, and the train bridge is TOTALLY new from when I've been up there.

Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
I'm working on "The Reach of the Chef" (I'm kinda in the middle of like 4 books). It's solid so far. Kinda rehashes a bit of "Making" but it's fun.
I have Heat, and I'll be gettin Nasty Bits at some point. |
Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
Dids,
Despite our differences, I [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] your picture threads. They never disappoint. Also, I see your loc: has changed quite a bit over the last few months. Assuming it's accurate that's a pretty kick-ass accomplishment of which you should be especially proud (particularly during the holidays). |
Other Books

Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
The shed picture appealed to me.
Checked the link. Since your camera has magical powers, can you tell me what I'LL be getting for Christmas next year? And who will show up at my house? |
Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
Didmonster,
How much post processing did you do on these pictures? |
Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
Very nice stuff, Dids.
I enjoyed most all of it, but was (dare I say) riveted with the photos of your food. Are you available for catering? |
Re: Some Pictures Took that I Like- Enjoy!!
Tron,
Using gimp I've adjusted the levels and contrast on all of these. My camera tends, even without flash, to take pictures a little washed out, so I'm mostly correcting for that. These are less produced than a lot of my food pictures, which sometimes have the contrast ramped up by 50% (part that is being indoors with bad photo lighting and a [censored] flash). Frankly, the biggest part of post production is just artfully cropping the images. Makes a huge difference in terms of composition and stuff like that. A good deal of this I learned from my father, and infrequent OOT poster Spanaway Vin. The more I get into this, the more likely it is that i'm going to end up dropping money on an SLR. |

[/ QUOTE ] Seriously, I love food writing but can't stand Steingarten. The guy will write a piece about some food that regular schlubs eat and make sound like he's a war journalist toughing it out in Bosnia. I'd recommend Alan Richman's Fork it Over as the best collection of essays/stories on food and drink. |
