What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
Last night I was sitting next to this 50yr old guy at the 3/6 table. He seemed like a nice guy and a decent player and we made polite chit-chat. However as the night dragged on he kept trying to teach me not to raise with TT, JJ, AQ, AJ, etc. Of course since we have all read SSHE we all know this is terrible advice. This happens every once in a while where some guy will want to talk about his god-awful strategy with me and I have never known how to react to it. It makes me a little uncomfortable. I don't want to educate the players at the table but I also don't want to seem rude and flat out ignore people like that. I like to keep a fun and sociable atmosphere at the table.
How do you react to these people? |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
nod. change the subject. profit.

Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
I explain my reverse implied position theory to them.
Pot odds does not matter, you need reverse position to win. Unless it is Tuesday, when any hand with a Black Queen wins, unless 8s have been hot. |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
concede and tell him, "you know, you're probably right. i'm only raising with KK or AA from now on."
continue normal play. |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
I would simply thank him for his advice and continue on with ur play. And then when he bets his kings or aces call his bet and beat him with ur flopped str8.

[/ QUOTE ] This could create bad vibes if he notices that you are "shinning on" his advice, but saying he is right. I think something like this is better "yea you're probably right, but old habits are hard to break." It is similar to how the bad players react to the substitute professor, "yea it was a bad play, I play bad" |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
I just say im horrible at poker and still learning and thank them for the advice anyway.
|
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
I like to respond by making up terrible strategy advice for them. My favorite is to point out that if you have T,5 then EVERY remaining card is an out since it either makes you a straight or a pair. Since you have so many outs it makes sense to cap it pre-flop. I rarely play T,5, so I just complain that I keep getting dealt crap hands like pocket J's to explain why I keep folding.

Is there any other option than nodding and smiling?
"Oh, yea, ah, okay, right, ah, great." |

Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
yeah, or you can always just try saying whatever you hear other people say when they play bad like...
"i'm on vacation...i didn't come here to fold" |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
Nod and agree. If you happen to get those hands (JJ, TT, ...), and lose you make a comment about how you made a bad raise preflop, if you win you say how you made a bad raise preflop but still got lucky.
Plus, if you raise preflop and the flop is something like A K T you fold and sigh to the other guy about how QQs are crap in these low limit games. I'm pretty good at putting up with complete [censored] from guys sitting next to me. Although I had a guy last week that actually caused me to go out and buy a nice MP3 player, simply because I don't think I could stand another session with the pointless crappy yapping from a guy like that next to me. |

How do you react to these people? [/ QUOTE ] Cry a little on the inside, smile a little on the outside, and try to use this information (if they follow their own advice) to my advantage. I usually avoid debating strategy in game, and like you said, keep it fun and sociable. |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?

How do you react to these people? [/ QUOTE ] The answer is simple: run with the faulty logic. "I have to raise with these hands, because my pocket aces never win." "This hand would have won me a ton of money an hour ago. I'm not missing the boat again!" "I read this move in Moneymaker's book." "I was watching [TV poker show] last night, and [pro #1] knocked out [pro #2] with this exact hand." "These two cards are golden. Pot odds, baby! Let's see a flop!" "I read this move in Hellmuth's book." |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
Use the information to your advantage in hands against the player engaging you in conversation.
Cut it short if possible by changing the subject or involving yourself in something else (the hand in progress, cellphone, ordering a drink, a different conversation). The player will stop soon enough. If anything, simply say that you disagree and that you have your own strategy, and prefer to play your own way. This doesn't have to be complicated, and you aren't giving anything away by disagreeing politely, most crazy old 50 year old men aren't capable of taking in the information anyway. |

Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
Egg them on. "Oh yeah... AK is never a raising hand because you don't even have a pair yet. Any two suited cards can make a flush, so it would be pretty stupid to not see a flop with them. Sometimes you should switch to low cards if too many flops have been hitting high because it's due for a correction."

Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
Look around the table and see who agrees with him. Who's nodding their head.
People are at a poker table, they'll talk poker. Go to a football game and try not to talk about football... You make them feel like you'll seriously take their points into consideration. Then you raise the next hand like that. Shrug and say you just can't help yourself. I don't mind if they talk bad strategy at the table. You can learn alot about your opponents in these exchanges. Just don't give any info. Keep the conversation in their court. People love to talk about themselves. This works great in games where you don't know anyone. b |

Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
"Are you KIDDING me? I LOOOOOVE to raise"
or "I know, but I like raising a lot, I need to play in big pots for it to seem worth it." or "I usually don't play like this, but I am trying something different today." or "FKU, you cheap bastard, the 1/2 is over there!" |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
Just shrug and say I came to gamble.
Then overbet the nuts into him and stack his chips a few seconds later. |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
"Yeah, probably so..."
|
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
I pretty much react the same way to any strategy talk or people showing me their awful draws that missed on the river.
Shrug, raise hands with palms open and ask "whaddayagonnado?" |
Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
I just say, "I hear ya," nod lots, and then say, "I have to go burn one outside ... good luck today."
Mostly, I just listen, nod, and get outta' there as quickly as possible. |

Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
Depending on how douchey/nice/bad the person is my response in this sort of situation will range from "that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard" to "I like to gamble" or maybe the old "I had a special feeling".

Re: What do you say when someone tries to talk bad strategy with you?
Nod, smile, then lean over and whisper to him "My cat's breath smells like cat food."
Or "I have poo-poo in my no-no." That should do the trick |
