TUNICA - only 1 month away

Only one month till early January in Tunica.

--Two big tournaments for the price of one.
--The big crowd surge the first two weekends.
--Catfish
--Kudzu
--Triple Draw Lowball

Its all too good to be true.

Is it weird that I live ~3 hours from Tunica and can't remember where there's any kudzu along the way?

I can't wait for Tunica. It's an annual trip for me and my buddies. We'll be there the first week of the Gold Strike tourney.

Just one question RDH, is that Henry Earl in your sig?

If you are coming from Memphis and turn at the Horn lake exit. Watch the right hand side of the road.

Re: TUNICA - only 1 month away

I've lived here for 4 years and have never had it.

Also, for those who haven't been here for awhile there's now a slightly faster way to get to Tunica from Memphis.

you take I-55 down to Exit 284 or so.
I-69 at Nesbit cuts directly across to Tunica.

And I suspect the Horseshoe will have something good for us, too.

Re: TUNICA - only 1 month away

The Horseshoe is setting up some weird Old vs. Young tournament.

One half the field is all the 50+ players.
The other half is younger than 50.

Then the final 5 from each half of the field meet at the final-table.

No, I'm not making this up.

I'm sure Horseshoe will have a couple other things going too.

It's a cute concept chipr7.
Just kind of weird when I first heard about it.

I believe someone told me that it's mid-Jan or so and is $1k buy-in.
Correct?

[/ QUOTE ] It's $1000 + $80 and hosted by Johnny Hale. The Seniors and the "Young Guns" play down to a final table EACH on Janurary 18th. Both final tables will come back on Jan 19th and 5 Seniors and 5 Young Guns with be seated at the final 2 tables. In addition to the prize pool there will be a points system where 20th place gets one point and 1st is 20 points. The "team" with the most points wins $5000 each. It's gonna be fun!

Re: TUNICA - only 1 month away

Seriously, as Chip probably can attest to, the month of January in Tunica is slammed. If you plan on playing either tournament in town, be sure to bring plenty of cash for the side games. In my experience, these folks come to GAMBLE & the games can get pretty wild. If you don't have room reservations already, you may be screwed because they go fast.

Yes, definitely book your rooms as soon as you can.

Waiting until the last-minute or until you get there is definitely too late.

Trying to get your room now might even be kind of difficult.

Re: TUNICA - only 1 month away

booked the week b4 last year, and the room rate was reasonable. and yes the cash games were pretty wild. first day last year i played 2/5nl for about 12 hours, and there was a lot of action. i remember looking around my table about halfway through my time and seeing about 16k on the table.

It's too late to get a room unless you're juiced in. Rooms are $49 a day at the Shoe. I have one, but don't know if I'll use it yet.

You can try the Gold Strike or the Grand, but I doubt if you can get it.

If all else fails try Sam's Town.

How are the Tunica casinos around christmas? I believe I will be down there for a day or two around this time.

Does it kill or increase the action? Or is there no real change?

It's usually a little slow around the holidays but you can still find a game. January comes in with a bang though.

just booked a room at sam's town for the first weekend (4th-6th) and at the horseshoe from the 7th-12th. horseshoe was real expensive on the weekend and gold strike was sold out. I didn't try any cleverness like checking a bunch of different internet agents, though, so maybe you can get in at Gold Strike somehow. I just went through the casino's websites themselves.

if you are renting a car or driving in there are a cluster of motels just over the Tennessee boarder in south heaven. Motel 6 etc... might be cheaper, they are right on I-55 2 exits north of Tunica. (take I-55 to the new I-69 which exits right in front of the Grand. in case Sams, Hollywood and Resorts are booked. There is also the Isle of Debris (Capri) about 45 Minutes south of Tunica.

There are several independent hotels that usually have rooms available within a couple of miles from any of the casinos. They're on the Casino Strip & Casino Center Blvds. You'll pass them as you drive in.

BTW...it's Southaven, not South heaven. And its in Mississippi, not Tennessee.

I know southaven is in Mississippi, Which is just over the Tennessee boarder going south to Tunica from the Airport on I55. Sorry for the confusion.

Those Motels on the outlying areas really see you coming. You might see one car in the parking lot and they'll rob you for $95 a night.

It really is hard to get a (good) room in that town. There is a lot of politics involved. I had to juice everybody when I was there just to get and keep my room.

Well, here is an alternative if anyone is interested & can't find a room anywhere else. There is a small local motel called the Delta Plantation Inn that is on Hwy 61 south of the casinos (about 10-15 mins away). It is pretty much a no frills, roadside motel & I believe they have rooms for around $35-40 a nite (not sure though!). Seems clean enough if you just need a place to crash during the tournaments. But I would probably only use it as a last resort...

Flying in on the 3'rd and staying until the 9'th. Hopefully coming back on the 20'th! I got my room at the Strike 3 months ago. Since my first trip there 3 years ago, Tunica has become a regular January thing for me.

Re: TUNICA - only 1 month away

Another alternative, if you can't get a casino hotel room, or a nearby Tunica room is to stay at one of the Extended Stay Hotels in Memphis. The rates weren't raised for the tournament last year, and it can be a nice break from the constant casino atmosphere. But again you WILL have to make the drive from Memphis to Tunica everyday but it isn't all that bad, especially if you can't get a room in T-town.

I was planning on going.

Real basic questions already addressed but need some infos.

What would be the best time to go for smaller tournies?
What are the best casinos to stay at and what are the room rates going for?

MrFizzbin 12-14-2006 09:40 PM

Re: TUNICA - only 1 month away

for the Smaller events ($300 and $500) events you might want to register early (night before or early morning) because the lines for the early event registration at the Circuit in September was really long (about 2/3 hours of standing in line to get in.) and about 100 + alternates for the first event or 2.

The Summer event at the Gold Strike the lines were shorter and didn't take as long to get into the event.

My advice is if you really want to play it never hurts to register the night before.

The Harrahs events took both Tournament chips or Cash, the Gold Strike makes you buy tournament chips to pay for your entry so at the very least make sure you get your chips for the GS events before standing in the registration line.

Not sure when the registration desks open, I'll find out and post next time I get back from Tunica.

I'm not much of a tournament player but do the obvious...check their websites. Better yet go to this website:

it has links to every casino in town.

youtalkfunny - closer to 20 now that you can just take I-69?

Thinking that has to be a better option than trying to trudge through crappy Goodman Road traffic.

In other exciting news, that's where I stayed the very first day I came to this area in Sept, 2002. The company I was interviewing with put me up there.

Brad (or anyone else knowledgeable about Tunica poker scene)-

What are my chances of finding some decent 7-stud cash games to play during the two weeks of the tourneys? (I assume that neither of the tourneys has any stud events.)

I'm seriously considering making the drive over from ATL if I can find somewhere to stay...not having any luck so far, as even the Southhaven hotels seem full.
