320-306 over Jeter

Olberman was being a huge douche this morning on ESPN radio, saying how he was shocked Jetah didn't win. I used to like that guy.....now I just kinda like him. I know that fact keeps him up at night.

I thought Jeter was definitely going to win this one.

Morneau winning just came out of nowhere. I really didn't consider him that valuable to his team, especially compared to Jeter and Ortiz.

I would have had Jeter around 6th. This isn't exactly leaving 1999 Pedro off the ballot.

It's just baffling that Morneau was the MVP over so many guys who had such an edge in the numbers. I thought these guys looked at HR/RBI totals?

HR/RBI/OPS
54/137/1.049 David Ortiz
35/102/1.058 Manny Ramirez
44/120/1.007 Jermaine Dye
42/117/1.098 Travis Hafner
42/109/1.014 Jim Thome

What do these men all have in common? Much better seasons than Justin Morneau. Frank Thomas, Paul Konerko and Jason Giambi are all right there too.

HR/RBI/OPS
34/130/.934 Justin Morneau

I guess he had a bunch of RBI, but you pick him over a guy with twenty more homeruns and more RBI and a far superior OPS? What in the world is going on in writer land? Jeter and Mauer had decent seasons, but weren't nearly as valuable as any of the guys I've mentioned already. If some other shortstop had that season for the Seattle Mariners he definitely wouldn't have finished in the top 10, and definitely wouldn't have a gold glove.

Oh and just in case people didn't notice cause he plays for a small market team in Minnesota...

W-L/ERA/IP/SO
19-6/2.77/233.2/245 Johan Santana

I think my ballot would've looked like:

1. David Ortiz
2. Travis Hafner
3. Johan Santana
4. Derek Jeter
5. Joe Mauer
6. Roy Halladay
7. Jermaine Dye
8. Carlos Guillen
9. Justin Morneau
10. Jim Thome

mvp isn't just good stats, it's how much they feel the player carried the team (in this case, to win the al central). some of the players listed were on teams that went nowhere, like ortiz.

Then how'd A-Rod win? This [censored] is bananas. Ortiz won a ton of games for the Sox this year, and they were leading their division until they collapsed in that Yankees series at Fenway.

cause the writers are morans. Or because there was no standout guy for mvp on a winning team that year (there may have been i dont remember)

edited to fix formating

And Justin Morneau is a standout guy? He's a middle of the pack first baseman this year. He had 6 homeruns after the all star break.

woohoo, Canada has the best player in the NBA and now the best player in the AL. Can't wait for Vanderjagt to be named NFL MVP. Biakabutaka had a chance until he blew out his knee half way through his rookie season. Maybe, Andy Fantuz or Jesse Lumsden will win one day.

Re: Justin Morneau wins AL MVP

I can understand people disagreeing with this pick, but were people really that surprised by it? I thought it was pretty obvious that they were going to pick Morneau or Jeter. Most fans follow batting avg, home runs and RBIs... so those are the main statistics they vote on (it seems). Morneau did well in all three categories.

Jeter lead the AL in VORP and his defense was much better (ie. existant) than the two guys closest to him (Ortiz, Hafner).

This is a shaft. I can't say it's along the lines of Bonds in 1991 or Albert Belle in 1995 because there were so many other players that could have deserved it, but if you compare Morneau to Jeter, it's just as bad as those two.
