I actually enjoyed watching the World Cup this year. I think soccer is pretty ok. I did however find it pretty retarded that flopping around and constantly trying to get penalties is apparently so pervasive. I know other sports have this, but it seemed much more pronounced in soccer.

i feel pretty much the same way UA. We watched most of it at work. I've always said that the best players at something playing for their countries will usually be interesting no matter if you normally like the sport or not. This explains why I watched 10 or 12 curling matches at the last Olympics.

Instead of making this another of a dozen other soccer threads...

I don't know much about Klinsmann. I really honestly don't know much about the US national team either. What makes this a particularly good fit, aside from that Klinsmann has had success at the international level?

Seems like everyone in the US thinks he is going to get the job. Just [censored] do it and start working on our team!!! Gulati actually pisses me off with his spin and question dodging.

its up there with football imo. its hard to explain but the short is that its super hard to get 11 players to play together and think alike and if you achieve that then you can outplay teams with far better talent.

in the case of usa soccer, at this point, the coach is also expected to implement (or at least be a part of) programs that will develop talent at the youth levels. this is quite a responsibility but i can see removing from the coaching comparison.

you simply cant say this without playing them.

Re: Obviosuly this is insanity....USA Soccer.....

I don't see how its comparable with football. There aren't any plays that need to be called, nor are there anywhere near as many substitutions. Basketball is fairly close conceptually since all players play both offense and defense, and there is a ton of improvising. So to me, it seems closer to basketball.

Re: Obviosuly this is insanity....USA Soccer.....

the problem with your thinking is that you automatically assume that calling and designing plays is the biggest challenge a coach faces. fwiw, much of a basketball game is scripted.

think about this, a soccer coach must make his team execute plays, without ever calling them.

An example that most likely suffers from a small sample size but has been impressive nonetheless is Aston Villa from last year to this year.

Eh, not really. The basic set is scripted, or maybe the first option or two, but -- particularly at the higher levels -- basketball is very similar to soccer in that a coach installs a style of play and relies on the players to play within it.

[/ QUOTE ] for a football coach, it is one of the biggest challenges.

[/ QUOTE ] Replace basketball with football. The good coaches in football almost always know what plays they are calling on their first offensive series. Basketball is much more like soccer. There are some set plays, but ultimately its about improvising and gettting your players to play together in your system. Also, look at soccer and basketball teams. They generally play the coachs style. Think of Flip, D'Antoni, Larry Brown, Phil Jackson, then move onto soccer and think of Arsene Wegner. They have their own playing style that they want their team to play.
