FTP 5/10 - Flush On River

Villian is 40/30/4 and good. Probrably the toughest 5/10 player on FTP. He has 1200 to start and I cover.

I think a lot of the time I just check behind on this flop but I hope you are joking about the river.

If you can't think of who it is off the top of your head then you probrably haven't played with him. I think it is a lot closer than most of you think. This is missed clubs or diamonds almost everytime. I think most of you are giving villian too little credit just becuase he is 40/30. He plays pretty straight forward post flop.

dude, if he is 40/30 and plays pretty straightforward postflop, he isn't good.

cumicon,

if the flop was KcQd7c instead, i might consider it briefly. but i would still call.

So a good 40/30 has to play crazy postflop to be good?

what? no. but if he's playing that many hands AND playing well/tough (hence, he's a good player), playing straightforward postflop wouldn't make any sense. he'd be owned by anyone with half a brain.

Important lessons in no-limit hold'em I have learned from Dan Bright:

1.) Never fold AK. Ever. (of course)
2.) When you have bottom set on a dry board and someone else starts going crazy, they slowplayed aces preflop.
3.) When you have a set and they go crazy when the flush draw gets there, they have a lower set.
4.) When you have a low flush and they go crazy, who the [censored] knows what they have but you have the nuts so get all-in.

Straightfoward wasn't the best way to describe him. I meant that he played well post flop and wasn't crazy/overaggro like you would expect from a bad 40/30.

Three hands you lose to that might play this way: JTd, AQd, AJd.

Hands you might beat: Anything else.

This is an obvious call.

The flop is a little frisky but not too awful. Please call the river.

What are the reasons for just checking this flop? This seems like a standard cbet for me, especially because you will get a free turn card a lot.
