bathroom chess

This probably isn't the right forum for this, but at least it's funny. The World Chess Championship is in serious danger of being cancelled mid-match due to conflicts over bathroom usage. (One player is using the private restroom "too much".)

http://beta.uschess.org/frontend/news_7_124.php

For those that don't know, the International Chess Federation is totally corrupt, so stuff like this isn't so unbelievable.

This is pretty funny. It's pretty clear what the implication is. I wonder how far this will go.

I'm sure you're familiar with the shenanigans that took place in the Karpov-Kasparov matches. The drugs, the different colored drinks, et cetera.

I thought this thread would be about an exciting new business opportunity in which you were planning on installing networked chess gaming systems in bathrooms. People could decide on their moves and finish games naturally over the course of a couple weeks against opponents from around the world.

I was a little bit off in my guess.

Security at the World Championship is tighter than that. Im sure both players are searched and that the bathroom is sweeped before each game.

I think this [censored] is hilarious. To what extent do you think Kramnik's complaints that the appeals board are biased towards Topalov and are doing this just to mess with Kramnik have any weight?

not really, but they are definately up there. the best supercomputers have an estimated rating of over 3100 though, where the best players have around 2800.

This is completely standard for a world champ match...c'mon curtains, while it's funny it's (IMO) nowhere near as weird as half a dozen previous world champ match stories.

This isn't really true, to my knowledge. I don't think there's been a serious computer-human match any time recently where the computer hasn't at least drawn the human. In many cases the computer has been annihilating the human (I'm thinking of the Adams match here in particular), and while they are playing on somewhat powerful computers, they certainly aren't what I'd call supercomputers.

Yugo: don't worry, Topalov has crazy parapsychologists in his employ, too. If the match continues I'm sure we'll hear complaints about hypnosis and the like at some point.

That's a pretty damn good idea IMO

Office building toilets would be ideal. Middle to upper class people using the same set of toilets for years on end

The 50 times is apparently an exaggeration. Kramnik is also apparently drinking tons of water during the game. He's had some weird health issues in the last couple of years, so it's possible that he has legitimate health reasons for all of this.

Chess players can be extremely superstitious and develop routines that can be very strange. It does seem plausible to me that this is something he is doing so he doesn't have to sit at the board the whole game....some players like doing that and some like to walk around a bunch and stuff.

I dunno, it really doesn't seem very weird to me if he doesn't like staying at the chessboard when thinking about many of his positions. Where else can he go?

Yeah computers haven't really passed the top humans but the top humans aren't really proving that they are better either. However, in many situations it's very possible that being able to access a very strong computer program remotely could be extremely helpful in making a decision. But of course there is a ton of security and like almost no way he can go to the bathroom to cheat in this way.

I hope they start doing actually crazy [censored] b/c this bathroom thing IMO is very weak sauce .

Head games.

These world championship matches, for the most part, are between two evenly matches players, and most matches will end in draws. Any little edge to unsettle the opponent is often taken.

Just the appearance of going to the bathroom was targeted to knock Topalov off his game a little. And obviously it's working.

These world championship matches have a long history of such tactics being deployed. It's actually pretty standard.

In backgammon each player usually have 2-4 five min. breaks depending on the match length. I'm a bit surprised, that a similar rule doesn't exist in chess.

Kramnik had 2 wins, 2 draws, and 0 losses when the disputed fifth game took place. With only eight games remaining, Topalov was in a lot of trouble.

I guess it's a bad time to be a chess fan.

I (potentially) know my first sex offender.

The head of Lowell High School’s math department was ordered held on $1 million bail yesterday after he was charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and incest.

...A prominent chess player, (Severine) Wamala runs the high school’s chess club and organizes regional chess tournaments. His daughter and two sons all are nationally ranked chess players, according to several Web sites.

I played in Severine's first few tournaments. At the time I was running the tournaments at Boston's Boyslton Chess Club. We talked a fair amount about how to make his tournaments work financially since the first one lost money.

Aren't backgammon matches usually comprised of a number of games, anyway? The breaks could easily be between successive games in which case it's clear there's no issue.

Topalov won in Game 9 to take a 5-4 (including the forfeit win). There are just three games to go. Kramnik will have the white pieces twice.

The Wikipedia page for the match has all the game scores.
