Who is a better hitter? (Poll)

Re: Who is a better hitter? (Poll)

Um, Adam Dunn hits like .230. Only worry about Ichiro is his average with RISP in April and in August were .174 and .094, so that might be a problem.

Also Dunn strikes out a lot more and walks too much. If he walked less and struck out less he'd get more hits and be a better hitter.

can we change the poll title to "better player"? that definitely changes my answer.

There as different as hitters can be, but they're roughly the same value.

Both their teams are missing the playoffs, so the answer is obviously neither.

Or are you factoring in speed and defense?

Re: Who is a better hitter? (Poll)

Remember Jack, Ichiro's speed allows him to stretch out extra bases and hits Adam Dunn can't (and I believe that shows up on EQA). Dunn's the better hitter, though Ichiro playing RF with his speed clearly makes him the better overall player.

This evens out by the fact that Dunn's singles and doubles typically advance runners further.

Good point.

Ah well, who the hell cares if Ichiro's a better hitter or not, he's easily the better player. :P

I'm factoring in stolen bases. 44/46 on SBs really makes up a lot of ground. Throw in park factors and you've got similar-value hitters.

I think Ichiro's the better player (esp if he sticks in center) , but that Dunn's more valuable as a hitter.

[/ QUOTE ]

I voted for Ichiro because he's under rated on this board and I thought I'd be the only one. Then I was going to defend myself by defining hitting as the ability to get hits, which Ichiro is obviously better. As it is, the votes are about half and half, so I can say that Dunn is a better batter. When you factor in the speed Ichiro brings to the table, they are close overall offensively, although I still go with Dunn (Dunn is not a slow man). When you factor in the defense, even with Ichiro in right, Ichiro is a much better overall player.

Not to be a nit, but if were measuring who is a better hitter isn't speed irrelevant?

95.6% has to be the record for players with over 40 steals?

The only guys I can remember with a 10:1 ratio of steals to caught with over 30 SB were Eric Davis, 35/3 in 1988, and Barry Larkin 51/5 in 1995. Larkin was 91/8 over the three years from 1993-1995. Carlos Beltran was 31/1 in 2001, 41/4 in 2003, and 42/3 in 2004. He's got to be considered the most effiecent basestealer of all time, with a career 209 SB at an 87% clip. From 2000-2004, he stole 162 at a 91.5% rate!

Baserunning is definitely a part of offensive value.

I define better hitter as the one I wouldn't want to face in a key situation in the 9th inning with my best pitcher on the mound. That's just me though.

That is so vague because you aren't adjusting for the situation. Bases loaded nobody out tie game, and nobody on in a tie game with two outs are very different.

DUDE ZOMG THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS 2 OUTS RUNNER ON 3RD TIE GAME BOTTOM OF 9TH WHO DO YOU WANT UP!?!?!

Your Mom 09-29-2006 02:25 PM

Re: Who is a better hitter? (Poll)

Yes, there are numerous key situations in the 9th inning, so you'd have to look at all of them and how often they come up to determine the right answer using my method.

Hitting a bunch of homeruns off AAA pitching doesn't make you a good hitter in my opinion. There are a lot of guys who hit bad pitching well and hit poorly against the real good pitchers. There are other hitters that seem to hit close to the same against everyone. I'm sure you have some stat that proves me wrong though.

Re: Who is a better hitter? (Poll)

Maybe there's a difference between "better hitter" and "most valuable hitter." To use a Cubs example, Mark Grace was a better hitter, but Sammy Sosa was more valuable. In the 9th, they'd walk Grace to face Sammy.

Re: Who is a better hitter? (Poll)

This is really a silly question. Who is a better hitter?

Ichiro.

If the question was who is better power hitter, clutch hitter, RBI producer, RISP, etc then perhaps the answer changes.

Until the question gets clarified, I'm going with he-who-gets-the-most-hits is the better hitter, or he-who-has-best-batting-average is the best hitter. On either counts, Ichiro wins.

Your Mom,

Quick question: What do you think the difference is between AAA pitching and big league pitching as a "whole."

Also, a run in the 1st is of equal value to a run in the 9th.

I'm sure I will get alot of flack for this, but whatever.

Really... I thought they multiplied runs by the inning in which they were scored to tally the final score.

Everytime I hear of clutch hitting I think of Aaron Boone and imagine him as a first ballot HoF for being so "clutch" and then I throw up in my mouth a little bit.

With sample sizes so small most of the clutch hitting stats are redonk. And most of the best clutch hitters are bench players for craptastic teams.
