Anyone else going to be playing any of these tournaments? I will most likely play a few of the $200 daytime tourneys and a few $100 twilight tourneys. I hear they have satellites running all the time.

Anyone going to be there and want to meet up, pm me? Also, does anyone have any info on the structure (blind time levels, starting chips, starting blinds?)

I always find it funny when these casinos hold these obscure "open" tournaments when in reality, you can find them any day of the week in a bigger poker area.

That is true, but Reno isn't that big of a poker area. Even the good weekly tournaments in this town have trouble drawing more than 50+ people. Events like this at least bring a bigger draw of people and hopefully weak opponents. From past pot of gold tournaments I would expect the fields to be at least 100+ and more likely 150-200 for each event.

*and don't forget the $2000 championship event. I know it isn't $10k but it is a fairly large buy-in with a probable weak field.

I understand your points, but honestly, how many 10k events do we need a year? I'm glad, for once, that there isn't a 10k event at the end of this series of tournaments. There are too many as it is now.

I agree, $10k events are everywhere it seems. Even the Reno WPT event is only a $5k event, and I hope they don't change that in the following years.

Well since Harrahs dumped off the Reno Hilton, it's possible it will stay there now since it's not a conflict with the WSOP circuit like it was this and last year.

I will be there Mon thru Sun of next week, at least at night. I am not much of a tournament player but will check out the side action.

Young nut, do you play at the Peppermill much? If so what stakes? NL or Limit?

I will be there for at least part. Likely to play in the 2K.

By "play" I mean, double up early and then donk off my stack.

It depends on the night of the week. Usually the better tournament structure means a higher buy in. But some of the structures aren't too crapshooty.

Re: Reno Pot of Gold fall \'06

btw...I went and played for a while today at the Grand Sierra and while I was there, I found out the structure for the tourneys.

For the daily $200's starting at 11am. 2000 in starting chips, blinds start at 25-25 and increase every 40 minutes. This structure is pretty good and the dealers there told me these tournaments generally last about 10 hours.

For the nightly $110 you start with 1500 chips, blinds start at 25-25 and increase every 30 minutes. Still not too bad of a structure, and one of the dealers there told me that the fields for the evening tourneys are extremely weak.

They are expecting quite a turnout for these events (they were just setting up about 30 or more extra poker tables outside the poker room.) Should be fun.

pm me if ya wanna meet up.

IMO as long as you are not to greedy, yes. Between Reno and Tahoe you should be able to find good games. Each area has events or peak times that compliment each other. IF that fails there is always on-line or road trips you can do.

100% dissagreement here on the post above this one. You aren't finding anything higher than 4/8 limit holdem regulary, or 2/5 NL regularly in Reno or Tahoe. 10/20 + is dead up there. You could make a living playing online while living there though.

Photoc is right. The highest regular game (and by regular I mean nightly) is 6/12 with half kill. 10/20+ doesn't get going very often, maybe once or twice a week. During tournament series like the pot of gold you will get higher limits though like 20/40 and possibly above. But medium stakes games are very hard to find in this town.

Re: Reno Pot of Gold fall \'06

I have been pulling a grand a week out on the peppermill 10/20 for the last month. Sat. we got it up to 20/40. The 20/40 is rare but the 10/20 has been going for awhile now. Anyway he doesn't say if he plays NL. I have made a grand at 1/2 at the peppermill and the Eldorado has a bigger game.

I know the peppermill has a 10/20 fri, sat, and sun because I am there. I heard it goes on Monday too.

I can live on 4k a month but maybe you guys can't.

if the Peppermill gets there regular 20/40 game back when they hire a new boss that room will be very busy once again. Hiring a pit boss to run the room destroyed the action, he's gone and now maybe the 50+ players will come back.

They are running satellites when most of the tournaments are $100 and $200 buy-ins? What are they, like $10+5 sit and go's? Or will the satellites only be for the $2k entry?

The PM made three big mistakes recently:

1. They raised the rake.
2. They don't give a crap about what the players want.
3. They raised the rake.

If you raise the rake 33% and lose 30% of your players, you still may be ahead of the game. I'm not sure how much of the recent bad decisions were made by Ira versus higher ups at the PM. In any event, new management would be welcome and perhaps they can try to recapture their mojo.

I'm going to drive up from the Bay Area Saturday to play in the 11:00 AM event. I was thinking about playing in the 6:00 too but it sounds like it will go deep into the night and I have to be back on Sunday. Thanks for posting the structure, I was trying to find out myself. Good luck!

Good luck to you as well.

From what the dealer told me, the nightly events don't last too deep into the night. I think he said they generally get over before midnight, but it could differ with the size of the field. He did say the 11am events usually last 10 hours.
And the 2k event is a two day event.

In years past, the 6 PM tourney can go till 130 or so depending on the number of entries.

Where did you see that the $2K is 2 days?

whats so bad about that renodoc. they only take the whole prize pool every fourth tournament with that fee. who cant beat that rakeoff.

and the other ones are much better they only take the whole prize pool of a tournament every 10 or less.

its lucky lots of new players are coming for these tournys so it will still be awhile before the casino takes all the money and there is none left.

I'll play in one or two of the ones over the weekend, the whole working 50 hours a week doesnt make for lots of availability. If i do well in one i'll play the big one, bankroll isnt at the 2k mark yet as a whole so probbally not. If anyones going to play the later smaller nl ones tell me we can meet up.

Was there most of the day. NL cash games are all 3/5 blind and higher (a couple of people told me they were juicy). They had 4/8 and 10/20 running last I checked, and 20/40 getting started later in the night.

Unfortunately, I am not good at avoiding 6 or less outs on the river, so I had a very very rough day.
