Best Comedy Movie of all Time - Round Robin Division
 

Not an easy poll with more than 60 suggestions. I've decided to group the movies by era, and that way the winningest movies from each era will move forward to compete against the other eras for best of all time.

To be fair to respondants, some movies may receive overwhelming support in their category and will possibly be additional picks in the elimination division.

Anyone who hasn't seen the movies in the 'Classic' group, I urge you to do so, because they are all hilarious and really stand the test of time.

Issues:

-If we're only allowed to vote for one, I think the 1980s and 1990s categories are too big.
-Office Space was made in the 1990s
-Caddyshack and Arthur were both made in the 1980s

This is kind of an impossible poll. They should be in brackets of 3 or 4, voting for 1 out of 8+ movies doesn't really allow the cream to rise to the top.

You might be right, but I hope the sample of respondants is big enough to give us a feel for the best of each group. I won't let any good movies get eliminated here, don't worry.

As for the dates, I realize the issues, but I wanted to even out the groups a bit. Besides, Caddyshack was in 1980, which counts as the 70's for some, but I put it in the 70's mostly because of the wardrobes [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I was going to make the same complaints that others have already made, but my choices are all in first place except for one (Clerks, which is inexplicably losing to the Big Lebowski).

Office Space - Easily in that division.

Clerks - Very close, but it will always make me laugh.

Groundhog Day - Funny, and simply the best movie out of all of them on the list.

Being There - The only comedy that didn't make me laugh, It is a wonderful film though and in a meh grouping I will happily take it.

The Philadelphia Story - The easy winner for classic comedies, and my choice as the best pure comedy of all time.

Mad, mad, mad mad world

I think 40yov was "lol" funnier than Office Space, but O.S. is a classic and its funny on a deeper level.

The 70's is tough...lotta good ones but since I know caddyshack and blazing saddles will get a lot of votes I casted for Slapshot.

Oh, also...somebody voted for LIAR LIAR!?!? wtf. That movie is trumped by Blankman, So I married an Axe murderer, Class Act, and many many other movies from the 90's, but whateva. [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]

Wow, Slapshot and Blazing Saddles are getting crushed. I am amazed by that. Also, how can there not be more votes for There's Something About Mary? I thought that would be a heavy favorite.

Slapshot was 100x funnier than Caddyshack, while Caddyshack is probably in my top ten all-time. Caddyshack is far more quotable, IMHO.

And I agree with the guy who said S.A.M. is being snubbed. Although I voted for AP:IMM, I think most of the dumb and dumber votes should really be goint to something about mary. That movie was really funny. I think people forget.

I'll say it again, the poll is just a way to trim the fluff and pick seeds before the elimination rounds.

Agree with you about SAM, I don't see how people could pick D&D over it, but there you go. As for Groundhog day, I didn't check its dates on IMDB, just tried to remember.

The other travesty is that there's not a single vote for Return of the Pink Panther, which can only be because so many of the young crowd haven't seen it.

Nothing for modern
Clerks for 90s
Airplane for 80s
Holy Grail for 70s (and overall)
Close between Some Like it Hot and Dr Strangelove for classics- SLIH edges it

Im kinda tired after work but obvious omissions that havnt been mentioned above are
The Appartment (Classic, should be there, although probably behind SLIH)
Filantropica (Its not english, but its funny)
Cant think of anything else

the cream can't rise to the top when one movie (ie office space) is dominating its era and it doesn't even belong in that era!

and yeah, there are MANY comedies missing from the list: fletch and meet the parents are two that come to mind
