Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
how has no one said Widespread Panic yet?
oh, and facebook has a nifty little feature called 'the pulse' which makes charts based on what people put in there interests. so, according to facebook, the 10 most popular bands in all of collegedom: 1. Jack Johnson 2. Coldplay 3. DMB 4. The Beatles 5. Green Day 6. Led Zepplin 7. The Killers 8. Fall Out Boy 9. Red Hot Chili Peppers 10. Sublime for this list, here's what I have concluded: college kids like to smoke pot. |
Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
All,
it seems that there are two kinds of stereotypical college student. First, there's the-probably much more prominent in the 90's-hipster type wannabe who is inclined to listen to DMB , Jack Johnson and stuff like that. Then there's the "average" kid of today who is probably more in FallOut Boy, OAR, and whatever leans/is popular at the time. |
Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
There is also some older music that was once enjoyable, but has been beaten to death by college students. Songs like Sweet Home Alabama and many of Journey's tunes just don't do it for me any longer . . .

I'm sure many have heard of them, but probably a small percentage can name more than 1 or 2 songs. Don't get me wrong; I'm a huge fan, but the average student isn't. |
Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
how can the OP say radiohead is bad music?
|
Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
Well I'm in college and what I hear the most is. . . .
1. Air 2. Daft Punk 3. Radiohead 4. Some random Brooklyn 4 guys in ties sorta thing. 5. John Legend 6. Joanna Newsom 7. Kings of Convenience For what it's worth, I've been in college for 4 years and I hate DMB and OAR. |
Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
My top 5 (not sorted):
Aerosmith Genesis ELO U2 Billy Joel The bands I hear the most around campus: FallOut Boy OAR DeathCab Radiohead DMB 80s pop like Journey and Foreigner I've maintained that top 5 since high school. Unfortunately, a lot of 70s and 80s hits were ruined for me once everyone in my dorm had downloaded them. I remember playing drunk poker one weeknight and Freebird comes on. After a few chords, this one guy (not drunk) who has listened to nothing but metal before college proclaims "Guys, this is an awesome song," as if the song was an unfamiliar novelty. I shook my head in disbelief, and am doomed to remember this trivial shock every time I hear Skynyrd. At least my favorite Journey song - Escape - is not a popular one by radio standards. |
Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
Your top 5 makes me want to throw a brick in your face.
|
Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
i'm listening to a lot of jack johnson and lily allen right now. hmm am i leaving my hip hop phase?

They're from MD but have recently gone more mainstream. So yeah, more East Coasty, but I'm in Texas and everyone knows them here too.

Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
Last night the people two floors above me were playing Blink 182 rather loudly. At 2AM.
If I had external speakers for this laptop I'd have stuck them out my window and blasted Slayer - Exile back at them... Even though some things are better left unsaid There's a few things I need to get off my chest I need to vent - let me tell you why I'm suicidal, maniacal, self-destructive You leave me no hope, no life Nothing worth living for I've taken it, can't take it anymore My worst nightmare You make me want to slit my own [censored] throat Just so I'll be rid of you Just to get rid of you You self-righteous [censored] Give me a reason not to rip your [censored] face off Why don't you take a good look in these eyes Cause I'm the one that's gonna tear your [censored] heart out My hate is contagious; you've got no one to run to EXILE Just tell me [censored] why everything becomes an issue Your opinion is always senseless - [censored] this You make my [censored] skin crawl I've lived with it - can't stand anymore My worst nightmare I want to take a bullet in the [censored] head Every time I think of you, every time I think of you You self-righteous [censored] Give me a reason not to rip your [censored] face off Why don't you take a good look in these eyes Cause I'm the one that's gonna tear your [censored] heart out My hate is contagious Anyone else need to vent? You've tried my tolerance; I just want you to die There's nothing more for me to say There's nothing more for you to say There's nothing more for us to say I [censored] hate you anyway EXILE Can't count the ways that you light my [censored] fuse I can't tolerate the sight of you, the thought of you or anything about you You know what I want to see? How many ways can a loser [censored] lose I know you'll find a way The humility awakening the idiot inside You spineless [censored] maggot - you're just wasting my time Get out of my face - Get out of my life Out of my [censored] way - Just die |
Re: Post stereotypical college kid music.
Dude, trust me. OAR is from Maryland. I know a guy whose cousin is a guitarist, and on a couple of the songs on the live CD (yes, I'll admit it, I used to own it) they make shout-outs to MD.
Just checked wikipedia and they're from Rockville and they were playing as a foursome in HS, all went to OSU I guess, added a fifth, and released a CD. |
