settle a dispute: prop bet involved
if person A says that something will happen by "8p sharp" and a wager is placed with person B who "takes the over," does person A win if the event occurs by 8:00:59 or does he lose at 8:00:01? |
Re: settle a dispute: prop bet involved
My vote would be hi wins at 8:00:59. I take 8 sharp to mean 8:00 on a clock.
|
Re: settle a dispute: prop bet involved
he loses at 8:00:01

Re: settle a dispute: prop bet involved
I'm sure that's what he meant, but very few clocks go beyond seconds.
It clearly means the point in time that is 8:00. There is only one point in time that would be agreed upon as 8:00, and it is not 8:00:59. Physicists please do not reply to this post. |

Re: settle a dispute: prop bet involved
This is a decent thread idea. Everyone has an opinion, it's meaningless but kinda funny. What more do you want?
|
Re: settle a dispute: prop bet involved
8:00 sharp is anytime the minute hand is > 7:59 and < 8:01. Whoever called whatever happened wins, whoever is disagreeing is a bitch.
Edited to clarify |

Re: settle a dispute: prop bet involved
to the 8:00:01 contingent, consider this:
if you said to a prospective employer you'd show up at an interview at "8p sharp," according to your logic you'd be violating that statement even if you showed up at 7:59:59, as well as if you showed at 8:00:01. the obvious, logical, and common-sensical interpretation of "8p sharp" is that you'd be late by 8:01. |

Re: settle a dispute: prop bet involved
There is a time-tested solution here that allows for a fudge factor. Anyone read Around the World in Eighty Days?
Get a grandfather clock. When it stops tolling, the bet has been lost. If you bet for 1pm instead of 9pm, tough nuggets. |
