Men vs. Women - Serious post

I have been reading through OOT for close to a year now. I have not made many posts, but I've made an observation... I get the distinct impression that many (not all) of the posters here are of the opinion that men are superior to women in intelligence. I know that blah blah blah men are better at math blah blah blah women are better at verbal skills, but I'm asking, IN GENERAL, what are your honest (even if you are not proud of them) thoughts/opinions on the overall intelligence of men vs women?

Re: Men vs. Women - Serious post

Women are smarter than men until age 15 or so, and then men pass them, I think in large part due to aggressiveness and social conditioning.

You've been lurking in OOT for a year and not posting anywhere else? Creepy.

Re: Men vs. Women - Serious post

Like anything it just depends on the person. I have known some brilliant women and some stupid ones, just as I have met MANY stupid men as well as a lot of brilliant ones.

I DO believe men and women think differently and that this difference makes many people believe the the opposite sex is just not as smart.

Re: Men vs. Women - Serious post

Real possibility:
Men try to act more confident more of the time so even if they don't know something, they act smarter. This could give the false impression of men being smarter.

I personality think men in general are smarter as some evolutionary trait (huting takes more intelligence than staying home).

Re: Men vs. Women - Serious post

In my experience, intelligent men are capable of creative, strategic and abstract thought beyond the capabilities of intelligent women. Women can learn to compensate for this in various ways, but in terms of raw processing power men have the lead.

Re: Men vs. Women - Serious post

Men tend to be less talkative than women, women express their feelings/thoughts much more at whim than men. While a guy may be thinking something retarded, a woman is more likely to be the one to actually say it, so the perception is that women are generally less intelligent. IMHO.

[/ QUOTE ]Seems like in most primitive societies women stay home doing a ton of work putting together food and often housing for everyone while the men very occassionally work at hunting, but mostly figure out some way to get drunk or stoned. So, obviously men are smarter.

This is just because the tests are biased. If they rewrote the math questions so they related to things girls understand like spending their boyfriend/husband's money, it would make all the difference.

There's a link to the source on wiki that links to this: http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_dow...TALGRP_PRD.pdf

The numbers are in table A. I think the numbers are right.

The big question is whether SATs measure intelligence or not.

Re: Men vs. Women - Serious post

I've always assumed it was mainly social influence.

From my observations (somewhat limited, I admit) girls are pressed from an early age to be pretty and well behaved. Boys and pressed to excel and to be competitive.

I'm not sure that there is much of a difference based on the average, but it seems to me that there are more men at the extremes.

Average for the SAT is always 500, it's what they base the rest of the scale on.

i dont know if this is true at the low end of the scale.

FWIW i think the median woman may well be smarter than the median man, but men have a higher mean intelligence.

Overall average and variance:

Deary et al. (2003) performed an analysis of an IQ test administered to almost all children in Scotland at age 11 in 1932 (>80,000). The average IQ scores by sex were 100.64 for girls and 100.48 for boys. The difference in mean IQ is not significant. However, the standard deviation was 14.1 for girls and 14.9 for boys. This difference was statistically significant. In the sample studied, 49.6% are girls and 50.4% are boys. Because of the difference in variance between the sexes however, girls are in excess by 2% in the middle IQ range of 90–115. At the extreme IQ ranges, 50–60 and 130–140, boys make up 58.6% and 57.7% of the population (a gap of 17.2% and 15.4%) respectively. [b]That is, boys were overrepresented amongst the lowest and highest IQ groups[b].

Please guys, do not use the SAT as an accurate measure of intelligence. In fact, don't use it as an accurate measure of anything because it's a biased test that has been proven to be a crock of [censored].

I would even question using IQ tests to measure intelligence. There's been plenty of debate about that as well.
