Serious moving to Vegas question- What car to get.

So you get to help me decide what kinda car to get. Quasi-serious responses appreciated.

Situation: I'm moving to Vegas in a few days.

I used to drive an '86 chevy celebrity. I'm throwing it away and buying a new (read as could be used as well) car as soon as I get out there.

I've got 80k to my name, pretax. Probably owe 30-40k in '06 tax. Hourly rate over my last 160 hours is $600. Paid $9600 for Security deposit + 6 months rent on our house upfront due to lack of paystubs as a poker player, so I don't owe rent till 2007.

Due to having an '86 celebrity, I've almost avoided getting serious with chicks so I wouldn't have to drive them anywhere (live in DC now, can use metro) So I'm more than interested to flipping the switch and getting a car solely for women reasons.

As you can tell given my financial situation, it wasn't but 4-5 months ago my roll was in the 15k range. Assume my 160 hours at a $600 winrate was 8 tabling and enough hands to assume some sort of accuracy in winrates. All of this winrate was done at one limit and involves no huge score to skew the results.

Not the most disciplined, I'm not prone to perma tilt as in I get drunk, play 100/200 blow a lot, then do it the next day, but am prone to getting drunk and blowing 10k in a night. Some worry involving this and moving to Vegas, especially during series time. Don't expect to play in too many of the tournaments, but plan on buying into ME if need be, and assume I live expensively as in I'm going to be getting table service frequently, and eating at expensive Vegas restaurants ($100) approx twice a week. Have some pit problems but I am getting better with it (usually not buying for more than $2-300, opposed to years ago having -3,4k nights at the roulette table)

So basically I'm comfortable with my winrate, and apprehensive about my discipline. But my discipline issues aren't one that results in me going from 80k to 40k in a night. Usually something like 80k to 70k then spend the next week getting it back. Funds are diversified enough to ensure that gargantuan tilt can't be too devastating.

Choices are as follows (in descending order or price, and the top of the list is what I want)

Audi A6 = 50k
BMW 330 = 42k
New Honda Accord (which I actually thinks looks nice) = 25k
Used Honda assuming somewhere around 15k.

You can replace the used accord with anything similar and in that price range. Biggest factors = pimpability and safety. Getting either of the first 3 cars used is a possibility, as is buying or leasing. Alot of uncertainty I know, but that's where I'm coming from.

How many months will it take for the OP to be BUSTO after moving to Vegas?

I voted under, only cuz 2.5 months is too low. Set the line at 8 and it's fair.

Edited to say: dangit, that meant I should voted over.

Further assume: Roommate for next 2 years is rich completely tilt-free disciplined internet celebrity, so worst case scenario is staked.

So you have 80K, but owe 30-40K?

So you have 40-50K?

... and you are considering a 50K car?

What percentage of the young population has a car financed worth more or about the amount of funds they have available to them? Most ppl I know owe 10-20k on their car and have 2-5k in the bank with a steady job.

All my friends work at Pure, etc. so it is part of the culture I'm walking into. But yes, I am now leaning towards going low then 6 months from now trading in if all goes well.

Get an Acura TL, black on black and tint the windows. It'll be perfect for you.

Well for one, you shouldn't just accept that you'll probably blow money and make it back the next week. You should try to stop blowing money.

You also shouldn't get a car that expensive. It's not a good investment for your money because it doesn't get any kind of interest and depreciates in value greatly. Just get a decent 2000 car for like 5-10k and finance it. Start to value utility over extravagance.

I learned some of this the hard way...I'm watching my 5k tv while typing on my 4k computer. Wasn't great for the old bankroll, and I do sometimes regret the TV purchase (not the computer though, it's sweeeeet). Save your money for a rainy day, you won't always run well.

I bought an 06 Mazda 3 when I moved out here...I put 4K down and my monthly payment is like $250...

you don't need a flashy car, you get a BMW, somebody else has a Porsche or Ferrari, its not worth it...so you're always going to be competing with richer people

Black on black in Vegas is -EV. Also, why does everyone say that cars are bad investments and depreciate in value etc etc fap fap. It's not like people don't know this going into it, they just want a nice car. Weed is worth $0 after you smoke it, bad investment, don't buy any even if you like it!!!

I did sort of over-exxagerate my ability and/or history of blowing $. Traditionally, I've always been content spending a lot of money on dinner, a trip to best buy, for a nice round of golf, or table at a club, etc. but have never made any huge purchases. This is my first one, hence my apprehension. I'm not kurosh or anything, I just wanted to note that I'm not a total rock discipline-wise either.

I've always traditionally enjoyed making a lot of little purchases and avoiding big ones have helped me do that. (like 2 weeks ago while house hunting, eating at Prime, Fixx, Delmonicos, SW Steakhouse, and N9NE thanks to the 2+2 restaurant recommendation thread)

My roommate has made 100k/month the past few months, and we're splitting all the living room furniture, so I am stuck with the TV, although I think we're going to end up more in the 2500-3000 range. I'm not going to be able to skim on that because he won't let me. (He's keeping his house in Boston, so he doesn't want to buy all new furniture for himself, yet I am moving everything out of my apt.) Due to 8 tabling on a laptop, a desktop with 2 monitors is coming, but not necessarily immediately.

I like not having bills, so if I was spending 5-10k I'd just pay it off right away.

I'm aware of what I'm getting into, as poker has been my sole source of income for about 3 years. The previous two I made in the 70 range, living well and having fun, but not saving. It's only recently that I've turned the corner, not being stuck at 15/30 forever. But I'm a LT winner at short ring, full ring, NL, SnG's (where I started) and tourneys. About 250k overall in the 3+ years playing seriously.

I'm not trying to have the nicest car on the block, but I do think there is something to be said when you're a professional poker player for showing some degree success. I'm sure it's different out in Vegas when stating your occupation compared to D.C. where every girl is career-oriented.

I've never been the least bit superficial (as evidenced by driving my '86 chevy celebrity, even though it does only have 34k miles on it!, great aunt/handmedown upon graduation) although being new to money, driving a new car, and going clubbing regularly might end up changing that. What can I say, standing out in line for an hour like a doofus is the most awful experience imaginable, but having the bouncers part the seas for you rocks and rings style does sure feel nice.

No, but when I go to my buddy's house for BBQ's and his gf's friends are all 9's I'll be rolling right up to his driveway. The Vegas nightlife scene is about as superficial as it gets among locals. The chicks I'll be going for for the most part care about stuff like that. I'm no better than a 7 and most likely a 6 with room to bump up if I went to the gym and did something with my 6'0 165lb self. I can use the help, as absurd and superficial as it sounds.

...seriously...Have a friend who moved to Vegas when I did he was making 50k + a year multitabling...he moved here and barely touches online anymore as the lure of the B&Ms is ever present...Im sure this is common for many online players who make the move...

...my suggestions get a 20k-25k car...something you like...dont worry about the car speaking for you...your extravagance and confidence (assuming you have some) will be enough...

...as much of the superficial nature of the Vegas nightlife scene is, remember there are plenty of tourists that are just looking to get [censored], and they need limited excuse...simply throw some cash around but not being a smuck about it will get you the ass you rightly deserve...

...and [censored] the haters...buy whatever the flip you want..

Re: Serious moving to Vegas question- What car to get.

I live in LV and drive a Mazda Protege, even though I have the bankroll to buy a nicer car. I won't do it, though, because the working capital I have now can be tripled or quadrupled every year with the way poker is now. If I invested $8k in a car per year over 5 years, that's essentially throwing away $32k a year, which is not something I'd want to do.

If you're disciplined enough to play enough poker to afford this car, then do it. However, I'd probably never own a really nice car in LV because of all the bad drivers, car thieves, and dust.

DCJ,

while OP's admitting financially that its not the best thing, he bascially says that he needs a nicer car to feel more confident about himself and "get serious" with women

**considering your spending 'habits' i don't think you should get a new car yet. learn some behavioral control first.

Now that makes alot of sense, and I think has been a worry of mine that was underlying fear that you mentioning has brought to the surface.

Yes, there's been a bit of bragging, but I tried to mix that with plenty of self-depricating information as well. Should I have posted in BBV? It didn't seem poker related.

When I drove from college to DC, all the stuff was in my backseat and I couldn't see out of my back window because the material from my roof was hanging down, so I ripped it off. I needed a new battery at one point and got one, but left it on the floor of the passenger side for too long and battery acid leaked all over the floor eventually. I'd love to know who here would actually enjoy the prospect of picking up someone in that.

We're all douchebags, we post on internet messageboards. I thought we all universally agreed to accept that.

330 is nice but im not sure if its worth the premium
Audi is nice as well but for that price just the get the TL with A-spec package (at least body molding parts, suspension parts depending on how much you value that)

If I was shorter (im 6'3") I would have gotten an Infiniti G35 Coupe - Just uncomfortable seats and car had less storage/hauling ability than I needed
