Chopsticks

I have something to admit.... I don't know how to use chopsticks. I've tried so many times, I even bought those stupid beginners sticks with a spring, but for me its like I'm retarded... I become the most socially awkward person in the world.

So here is my offer OOT. Teach me how to use chopsticks and I'll give you $100. If I learn from a combination of posters I'll split the money. If I still don't learn, or if I'm just too lazy to do anything about it then you are SOL.

Anyone up for the challenge?

PS: I have some nerve damage, my hands are weak due to a skiing accident. This should make it extra hard

Re: Chopsticks

You just gotta get used to having the sticks there between your fingers. Once you get used to them being there and balanced, the rest is just pushing down with the index finger. It's all a matter of getting used to the chopsticks being there.

P.S. If my 10-thumb-having ex-girlfriend can learn to use chopsticks, you can do it too.

This is not a hacker link: chop stick demo

What are those spring things you speak of? I have never seen them.

Anyway, the way I learned was to balance one in the crook of my thumb and index finger, the other held by thumb, index finger and middle finger much as you hold a pencil. Then move the one held on top (by thumb, index, and middle) up and down to grab food stuffs.

Re: Chopsticks

T

Only one stick moves.
Hold one stick like a pencil, that one is still.
Put the other one along your pointer finger and just use it to press food against the stationary one.

EDIT:
After you have the stationary one in the same place as a pencil, it rests inside your thumb and on your little and ring fingers. You use the other two fingers to guide the moving stick with the tip of your thumb holding in place.
You can see it best here: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2039.html

First step is the bottom chopstick. Grasp it so that there is pressure between the base of your thumb and around the first line of your middle finger as such:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/reef/hand1.jpg

This leaves the top of your thumb and index finger completely free to grasp and control the top chopstick. The base one doesn't move, only the top

This probably would be a highly effective method. I recommend the really annoying nagging type with a high-pitched whiny voice. You will have killed her or learned how to use chopsticks by the end of day 2.

All I'm saying is, when TT decides that only OOT can help him learn to use chopsticks, he's in hard straits.

Shoplift some wooden ones from a cheap chinese place, take them home and practice picking up stuff.

TT, I MSpainted you instructions on how I hold chop sticks.

In the upper panel you pinch the bottom chop stick between your ring and middle fingers and keep this still through the eating process.

In the bottom panel you now grab the other chopstick with your pointer and thumb and move it up and down with your pointer finger so that it can meet the bottom chopstick and thus pick you up food.

This is an unusual way to hold the bottom chopstick. Normally, it should rest on the end of your pinky finger and be partially supported by the end of your ring finger. (I can't do this properly myself without cramping up after 10-15 minutes)

OP, you'll gain my utmost respect if you can learn to use those foot long Chinese cooking chopsticks or the annoying Japanese chopsticks that are smooth and tapered.

I have a slight adaptation to these instructions. I hold the bottom one against the tip of my ring finger and just above where my the finger is attached to my palm. I hold the top one with the tip of my middle finger and the first joint of the finger. If you can't get it with Hobbs, hope this helps.

I eat nigiri sushi with my fingers, but use chopsticks for other kinds and stirfry stuff. This reminds me, I should make sushi for myself again soon.

Re: Chopsticks

BEST CHOPSTICK TUTORIAL FROM A 100% CHINESE DUDE

Bottom chopstick

Should rest on the space between the joint/fingernail of the ring finger and the socket between the thumb and index finger. Note: your ring finger may be a little sore if not sued to it, but only lasts a short time and is easily worth it for chopstick proficiency.

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/5...ture0030fk.jpg

Top chopstick

Should rest on the space between the fingernail/joint of middle finger and be covered by the index finger. Thumb also provides support.

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/9...ture0051er.jpg

Combine together.

http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/8...ture0066di.jpg

Bottom chopstick never moves. Thumb, middle finger, and pinky never move. Only index and middle finger move. Move those fingers together downward to close.

http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/9...ture0072jt.jpg

Move index and middle finger upward together to open.
