Things people like that let you know they suck

A very specific post Dave made in TQZ made me think of this. Well, that and The Da Vinci Code. Across a wide range of areas, if people think something is good, they either suck or have pretty bad taste.

I also want to make a distinction between liking something and thinking it is really good. I think a McDonald's burger can be pretty f'in delicious at times. Same w/ KFC. But, I know these things suck. And I concede that Nickelback's song that they've recorded a bunch of times w/ different titles is very catchy and I liked it the first time I listened to it. But, I knew it sucked.

Music: Creed, Maroon 5, or Nickelback

Books: The Da Vinci Code, anythign by John Grisham

Food: McDonald's burgers, KFC chicken

so, what else? Movies, clothes, TV shows, celebrities, whatever - you name it!

JA,

Boy, that was a good one. I'll let you know when I make the "stupid obvious jokes people make that indicate they are not very funny and probably pretty dumb" thread.

AC,

That reminds me. Pretty much anyone who likes clothes that have a huge logo (ie: VERSACE, DIESEL, D&G, TOMMY, SEAN JOHN) or brand name on them. The exception to this, of course, is people who wear highly-logoed athletic wear from Nike, Adidas, etc. That is cool.

I agree w/ both of those statements.

Music: Jimmy Buffett, Grateful Dead, Bob Marley

Not necessarily because their music is particularly horrible, but naming any of the above among your favorite artists pretty much just says "I'm a boring person who likes to smoke lots of weed."

Reality television.
By the way, does anyone else feel like people who like 'The Da Vinci Code' are everywhere? It's like a damn zombie movie.

A Painted House is a great little book.

Bleachers wasn't bad.

A Time to Kill was good.

All 3 of the above are very good, not my favorites, but still make very enjoyable music. FWIW, I haven't smoked weed in a long time, and am generally not boring.

did you edit the OP? i didn't see the detail the first time around, that's why i mentioned the big mac/breast. mea culpa if not, good edit if so. i like the thread idea.

i think nickelback is genuinely good at what they do, and i don't think it's accidental, lucky, or on virtue of gimmick that they crank out so many widely popular songs. i agree with creed and maroon 5 but i would put, say, sum 41 up there instead of nickelback.

i think the "symbols good, text logos bad" rule sounds pretty fair.

but why is that? because of the simplicity of the logo? the message it sends vs. the status symbol?

Are you over 40? Because liking them is much more excusable if you are older and like them in a nostalgic sense. I was mostly referring to people in my age group (early-mid 20s) who like them because it was cool to be a hippie in high school.

I think this is a very silly thead, if this was meant for kicks and as some sorta joke, then I guess it's ok but dont' I recall Diablo posting bitching how the quality of the threads in OOT are boo hoo?

If it was someone else, my sincerest apologies.

The question itself: People that like to judge books based on the covers and make threads of a similar fashion do NOT suck, but do need to realize being so judgemental to a point where if person likes X then he must be Y is borderline childish.

People have been putting labels on one another, needlessly, for so long... I wish we'd start moving away from that , especially considering how many different people we get to meet on the internet, not try and flourish labelling even further with threads such as this.

I think you missed El D's point, he can correct me if I'm wrong. "Like" may be the wrong term. Enjoying John Grisham as some good airplane reading is perfectly okay, and doesn't say anything about a person. Thinking John Grisham is at the pinnacle of literature shows that a person doesn't know too much.

I think that's the point here.

El D,

I'll take "touchy-feely feel-good philosophy" for $1000.

Oh, and any modern popular country music. It all blows, and people who like it generally tend to blow as well.

Although I do agree that it's stupid when people listen to a certain type of music cuz it's cool, I think it's worse that you mark a group of people and then go and disregard all of their music as hippy-music, so therefore it's bad and you won't listen to it. All three of those artists have many great tunes that have nothing to do with smoking pot. How much of their music have you actually listened to besides their mainstream hits? Not much at all, I imagine.

People who like:

Car stereos you can and WILL hear outside the car at 2 in the morning.

Caring what belt buckle you wear.

Telling you how much their hair cut cost.

Looking for every opportunity to say, "Excuse me?"

Trying to get you involved in a clique when you take a new job.

Trying to make you dislike people you've never met, in general.

I worked at a motorcycle dealer that sold the big three Japanese brands and I have never seen in my entire life a more surefire, guaranteed indicator of suckiness than someone who either wanted to buy or owned a Honda Goldwing. Seriously, some of the most unlikable people you ever met.

people who wear those gold rings with a school crest on them, strangely enough the better the school is the more the person is likely to suck.
